Ask SLO

Ask SLO is the City of San Luis Obispo's new centralized resident engagement platform that is available online and as an app. This tool is designed to quickly connect community members with City services and information. Please do not use Ask SLO to report emergencies or request urgent police or fire department assistance.

The City of San Luis Obispo is committed to providing the public with as much information as possible to promote accountability and trust in government. Engage SLO is designed to make this information accessible to the public in a central location and provide a launching pad for future transparency efforts.

SLO Transit Bus Tracker

Bus route information for the City of San Luis Obispo Transit System. This app displays real-time locations of the city buses with notifications and schedules. It Features

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

Authorized personnel, elected officials, vendors, and volunteers may use third-party social media applications and websites to engage the public on topics related to City business and public affairs.

The City Manager or designees are responsible for the approval, administration, and oversight of the City’s general social media accounts that are not associated with a specific department. Department Directors or designees are responsible for the approval, administration, and oversight of their Department’s presence on any social media platform.

Staff, vendors, volunteers, or elected officials authorized by the City Manager or Department Director (or designee) to represent the City or department on social media must do so in a manner that is consistent with the City’s mission and organizational values, which are:

  • We have a sense of common purpose and direction pursued with passion and translated into concrete action
  • We are dedicated to the best use of resources to fulfill identified community goals and needs.
  • We recognize that the ability to lead can be found at all levels and that to create an environment to succeed requires leading by example.
  • We foster open and clear discussion that encourages the willingness to speak up and to listen, within a framework of respect and understanding.
  • We encourage effective working relationships within and between departments and the public to address issues and achieve valuable results.
  • We honor commitments, acknowledge legitimate differences of opinion and accept decisions reached with integrity.
  • We take personal responsibility to do what needs to be done and report the results in a straightforward manner.
  • We are open to change and willing to try new ways to fulfill the organization’s vision, mission, and goals more effectively.
  • We encourage and support each employee to improve relevant job skills and celebrate personal and team accomplishments.
  • We promote public trust by using City resources wisely, and through consistent fulfillment of these values.

Comment Moderation. Authorized personnel should make all reasonable efforts to moderate and/or respond to comments on official City social media posts to foster a digital environment that is respectful and healthy for all; when comments cannot be moderated or responded to regularly, personnel may set profanity filters if the social network allows. Staff are expected to refer to the Standards of Public Conduct when moderating comments (listed below). When possible, personnel can disable comments if the information is meant to serve as a bulletin only. Authorized personnel reserve the right to delete or remove comments that fall under unprotected speech if those comments violate the Standards of Public Conduct (listed below).

Standards of Public Conduct

The City of San Luis Obispo uses social media websites and applications as a public service to provide information and engage with community members on a wide variety of topics. The responsibility of content or comments posted by other organizations or individuals on social media rests solely with the organizations or individuals providing them.  

We encourage community members and users in general to engage with the cities social media channels. Healthy discussion and debate is welcome. However, the City reserves the right to turn off comments on any and all Social Media. The City of San Luis Obispo also reserves the right to moderate any content posted on the City’s social media accounts and pages.  

Comments that violate these standards of public comment or any applicable law may be removed:

  1. Advertising or solicitation of commerce;
  2. Spam; 
  3. Illegal content (i.e., threats of violence; comments that incite violence;
  4. Bullying, threatening, or discriminatory comments; 
  5. Obscene or sexual content; 
  6. Comments violating the privacy of private individuals or entities; \
  7. Comments that violates a copyright or intellectual property of any other party;  
  8. Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity; 
  9. Content that contains confidential or proprietary information about the City, its employees or vendors, or members of
  10. the public; 
  11. False statements of fact, misinformation, or disinformation;  Links or information that may compromise the safety or security of the public or public information systems. 

Statements or posts that constitute libel, slander, and/or defamation are prohibited; however, the City is not responsible for determining the truth or veracity of any statement made or comment posted by users of Social Media. Activity on Social Media is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies. 

While the City of San Luis Obispo makes reasonable efforts to monitor and moderate content posted on social media platforms, the City of San Luis Obispo, its employees and other affiliated individuals cannot moderate all comments and cannot always respond immediately to online requests for information. However, the City will make all reasonable attempts to remove comments that violate these standards of conduct in a timely manner.  

By posting a comment, users agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless, the City, its officers, elected and appointed officials, contractors, employees, and volunteers from and against all liabilities, judgments, damages, and costs (including attorney’s fees) incurred by any of them which arise out of or are related to content posted by users. If a user does not agree to these terms, the individual shall not use the City’s Social Media, as a violation of these terms may lead to legal liability. 

A comment posted by a member of the public on any Social Media is the opinion of the commentator or poster only, and the publication of a comment does not imply endorsement of or agreement by the City.
