State Highlights

President Obama’s birth state gave him a rare sweep of Democratic victories.

Neil Abercrombie, who left Congress to run for governor, defeated James R. Aiona Jr., the Republican lieutenant governor. He will succeed Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican.

Colleen Hanabusa, a Democrat and president of the State Senate, unseated Representative Charles Djou, a Republican who won the district this year in a special election.

Democrat Daniel K. Inouye, 86, won an easy re-election to a ninth term.
