GREETINGS
MOWACHAHT | MUCHALAHT MEMBERS
Welcome to our website, dedicated to honouring and acknowledging the unceded and never surrendered territory of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation.
The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, a territory located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, has thrived for generations beyond recorded history.
Our hahoothlee (territory) encompasses the Nation’s centre, known as Yuquot, situated in Nootka Sound.
With utmost respect, we recognize the inherent rights, title, and governance systems of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation.
Within our hahoothlee, the ḥaw’iih (chiefs) held the responsibility to manage access, and entire village sites were
under the ownership of the ḥaw’ił (chief) of the local group residing there.
Our commitment lies in fostering reconciliation, understanding, and mutual respect, while actively working towards dismantling
systemic barriers that have impacted Indigenous communities. Through this website, we aim to learn, share, and support the
Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation in our journey towards self-determination, cultural preservation,
and the recognition of our land rights within our hahoothlee.
Join us in celebrating the enduring presence of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people and embracing the importance
of reconciliation as we collectively honour our hahoothlee and the richness it holds.
As members of the Nuu-chah-nulth nation, we hold steadfast to our core values of
Hisukʔis cawaak (Everything is one), ʔiisaak (Respect with caring), and ʔuuʔaaluk (Taking care of).
These values guide us in all matters and remind us of the importance of our connection to the land and each other.
Our Story
The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is a
community with a deep connection to the land
and sea. For thousands of years, our people have
depended on the ocean, rivers, and forests to
sustain our way of life.
Our ancestors were skilled whalers, fishermen,
and traders, and our territory was a hub for
commerce and cultural exchange.
