About Kutnohorite
Formula:
CaMn2+(CO3)2
Colour:
White, pale rose, pink, light to medium brown
Lustre:
Sub-Vitreous, Resinous
Hardness:
3½ - 4
Specific Gravity:
3.12
Crystal System:
Trigonal
Member of:
Name:
Named in 1901 by Antonín Bukovský for the type locality - Kutna Hora, Bohemia, Czech Republic.
Dolomite Group. Ankerite-Kutnohorite Series.
The cation ordering is temperature-dependent: Unpublished studies cited by Goldsmith and Graf (1960) indicate that cation disordering in synthetic CaMn(CO3)2 begins at approximately 450°C. CaMn(CO3)2 formed at higher temperature has a disordered distribution of Ca and Mn, and a calcite-type structure.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.
Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.
Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars.
