It’s Bible School week. One sip of strawberry Kool-Aid takes me back to VBS snacks on the creek bank behind Belfry Baptist Church in the early 70s.

“And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die (1 Kings 17:12).”

We spoke last week about addictions that involve more people than we could imagine, and we should realize by now that personal problems happen whether one proclaims they are a Christian or not.

Dear Abby: My daughter, "Aline," 40, has gone from crisis to crisis since childhood. She can go from kind and generous one minute, to vindictive and mean the next. She's easily triggered into rants, hurling the most hurtful words she can come up with. Men move in and out of her life on a regular basis.

“And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die (1 Kings 17:12).”

My next door neighbor is a graveyard. Now some people would be freaked out by this, but not me. It remains the quietest, most peaceful neighbor I have ever had. I also get a strange sense of serenity and peace from living so close to a graveyard. It gives me a daily reminder that one day my own life will end and if I want to truly live then I have to do it today.

Dear Abby: My husband is very temperamental. When something goes wrong with his meal or service at a restaurant, or when he's driving and gets upset with another driver, he angrily vents to me nonstop, repeating the same things over and over. This happens only when we're alone, not when friends or family members are present. When I ask him to please stop because it's upsetting or stressful (or giving me indigestion if we are having a meal), he blames me and says I "have to" let him vent and say nothing, not even ask him to please stop so I can enjoy my food.

DEAR ABBY: My sister-in-law "Nancy" and my wife have a strained relationship, but they love each other and talk often. Every so often, Nancy becomes abusive with my wife. The ire stems from a messy divorce Nancy went through 15 years ago.

DEAR ABBY: My wife is having an affair with an old flame from when she was in high school. He was just released from prison after serving time for murder. I have forgiven her, but I told her to stop the contact. She said she'd rather divorce me than do that; I would have to live with what's going on. I love my wife, so I compromise for now.
