We are focused on ensuring that health and care research leads to adoption into the NHS which in turn provides patients benefit. EPICare, one of those key pieces of research into psychosis, is being adopted into the NHS with its recent launch in three major cities – Birmingham, Nottinghamshire and Cambridgeshire. Led by our NIHR Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration Mission, EPICare, a patient registry platform will deliver better care to over 2,000 patients living with psychosis. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re proud to reshare this fantastic example of NIHR-funded global health research in action. Poor maternal mental health affects up to one in five women globally, with lasting impacts for women and children. CHIME for Perinatal Mental Health is exploring how culturally embedded, community-led music programmes can support maternal wellbeing in The Gambia, South Africa and beyond. Bringing together researchers, health workers, musicians and communities, the project highlights the potential of creative, locally grounded approaches to improving mental health worldwide. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #NIHR #GlobalHealth #MentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth
Community members in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, brought all the joy [SOUND ON] at the launch of CHIME for Perinatal Mental Health, South Africa. 🎙️ Developed through collaboration between Institute for Life Course Health Research (Stellenbosch University), Perinatal Mental Health Project (University of Cape Town), University of Roehampton and the Khayelitsha community, CHIME in South Africa brings together mothers, community members, musicians, health workers, researchers and civil-society partners to explore how shared, culturally embedded participatory music-making can support maternal wellbeing. Our launch featured live performances, community dialogue and reflections from our partners all of whom are helping shape a model grounded in local realities and lived experience. As one of our attendees said: ''I am here, after my depression, because of music. I used to sing this song and it gave me strength. We have this music, it is there for us, we must just take it. And we must use it'' Congrats to our fantastic CHIME-SA team who made the day such a success! #WorldMaternalMentalHealthDay #MaternalMentalHealth #UCT #Khayelitsha #StellenboschUniversity #CommunityHealth #CHIME #MaternalWellbeing #NIHR Sarah Skeen Stefani Du Toit Simone Honikman NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research)

New advances in cardiovascular research are helping clinicians predict risk earlier and more accurately from inherited heart conditions to future heart attacks and strokes. Two major studies published this week highlight how: 🫀 heart scans combined with blood tests can improve risk prediction for inherited heart conditions ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eAZt2A87 🫀 a new tool could help assess future cardiovascular risk more accurately across diverse global populations using measures of kidney function ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ekDsF-Qu Both studies were supported through our research infrastructure: NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Oxford and NIHR ARC East Midlands, helping translate research into real-world impact for patients. Together, they reflect a wider shift in cardiovascular care, moving from reacting to disease to predicting and preventing it earlier. Hundreds of thousands of babies will be screened for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) as part of a new NIHR-funded study, marking a significant step towards the potential introduction of screening across the UK. SMA is a rare genetic neuromuscular condition which causes progressive muscle wasting (atrophy) and weakness. It can affect crawling and walking ability, movement, breathing and swallowing. The £4 million study will be led by the University of Oxford and will assess the feasibility, and effectiveness of including SMA screening as part of routine NHS newborn blood spot tests. Experts are collaborating across universities, NHS laboratories and patient organisations, including the charity Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK to screen up to 755,000 newborns across England from October this year. Commissioned in partnership with the UK National Screening Committee, the research will test the screening approach in the real world and help fill important evidence gaps, hopefully leading to earlier diagnosis and earlier access to life-changing medicines, treatment and support. Read more about the study: https://lnkd.in/euhfW-aH
Yesterday, the UK National Screening Committee released more information about the ISE of Newborn Screening for SMA, which is beginning in October in England 📣 As part of the consortium with the University of Oxford, SMA UK and other partners are proud to support this important work to improve early diagnosis and outcomes for babies with SMA. As a research-led Trust, we are incredibly proud of the people who drive forward innovation and improve care through health research every day. From securing funding and leading studies, to supporting patients to take part, publishing findings and translating evidence into practice, these achievements are vital to delivering better outcomes for our communities now and in the future. We are always keen to celebrate the impact of this work, including recent publications that are helping to address some of the most pressing health challenges we face. Earlier this year, colleagues from the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust worked alongside partners at the University of Exeter Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Exeter and ARC South West to publish important research in BMJ Open exploring how to improve antibiotic prescribing in surgical settings. With antimicrobial resistance contributing to over 35,000 deaths in the UK each year, this research is a fantastic example of the power of collaboration across organisations, bringing together expertise from clinical teams, researchers, patients and partners. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, and we know that masculine norms can leave men feeling less able to talk about their difficulties. This Mental Health Week, we are sharing our blog by Professor GJ Melendez-Torres and Dr Will Mason from the NIHR School for Public Health Research. They speak about how research needs to address these root causes to improve men's mental health. Find out more ⬇️

We have invested £5.4 million in 9 pioneering digital technology projects to drive innovation in social care, tackle adoption barriers, address inequalities and test new ideas in real world settings. The 9 funded projects will cover a range of approaches and interventions, including: 🖥️ virtual‑reality communication training for carers of people with severe mental illness 🏠 whether cheap, everyday smart-home gadgets can help people with dementia stay safely connected to friends and family 📱 how councils use smart devices to help older people leave the hospital faster and stay safe once they get back home 🚪whether commonly used gadgets - like Alexa or video doorbells - can give disabled adults more freedom and control over their own homes 📖 a practical toolkit to help care home staff and residents feel more confident when using digital technology, like tablets Professor Michael Lewis, NIHR Scientific Director for Innovation, said: 💬“The NIHR is fully committed to using digital innovations to improve the delivery of social care in the UK. This funding will help us build evidence on how digital tools can transform social care and improve lives." Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eXyZ-Tuu
