Living longer is one of the great achievements of modern science. But living better for longer is the next challenge. In this episode of ‘When Science Finds a Way’, Alisha Wainwright explores new research into the biology of ageing, including how scientists are measuring the “biological age” of our organs to better predict disease. The episode also considers how society’s approach to ageing could shape healthier futures for us all. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. https://lnk.to/jv0WbM

Last night in London during #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we officially launched the Wellcome Prize for Mental Health Science with Nature. Hosted by actor & mental health advocate David Harewood and featuring Wellcome Chair The Hon. Julia Gillard AC, the event marks the start of the world’s largest mental health science prize. Together, Wellcome Trust and Nature Portfolio are uniting to accelerate breakthroughs in depression, anxiety and psychosis. Learn more about the prize at: https://lnkd.in/eq3PxDdN #MindTheScience

Excellent to attend the launch of the Wellcome Prize for Mental Health Science with Nature last night.    There is extraordinary progress being made in mental health science, but too often breakthroughs do not reach the people who need them. Through initiatives like this, we can help close that gap, by identifying the most promising advances, shining a global spotlight on them, and supporting their path to scale.   The Prize is a powerful example of the ways we think Wellcome Trust can help achieve a healthier future for everyone, going beyond funding research alone to work towards translation into real-world impact.   This reflects a core part of Wellcome’s strategy: combining science, partnerships and targeted interventions to tackle some of the world’s most urgent health challenges.   I’m looking forward to seeing the science based innovations this Prize brings forward and the difference they can make to people’s lives around the world. Last night’s launch of the Wellcome Prize for Mental Health Science with Nature was incredible.   In my opening remarks, I spoke about the extraordinary moment we’re in for mental health science. We are seeing breakthroughs across pharmacological, psychological, social and digital interventions but so many people have no idea that this work is happening.   That’s what this prize is about: recognising work that combines scientific rigour with real-world potential, and supporting it to go further, faster.   It was also a chance to reflect on the global effort behind this—from our partners at Nature Portfolio to the researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experience who are shaping the future of mental health.   I’m excited to see the ideas and interventions that emerge over the coming months and, ultimately, the impact they could have for the one billion people worldwide living with mental health challenges.   If you’re working on something that could make a difference, we’d love to hear from you. https://lnkd.in/eXhZntpZ #MindTheScience #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

Mentoring supports career development and strengthens research culture – but how can we embed it effectively? We’ve launched a new resource outlining best practice in UK academic mentoring, including the principles and behaviours that underpin consistent, effective mentoring across research careers. It brings together insights from funders, researchers, practitioners, coaches and mentors. Explore more: https://lnkd.in/eAj2vrwd

“There are many people working on positive solutions... and that should give us hope.” Speaking at the Women Deliver conference in Melbourne - Wellcome Chair, The Hon. Julia Gillard AC highlighted how women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate‑related health impacts. From pregnancy and care-giving to increased exposure to food insecurity. This year, Australia will play a critical role on the international stage as co‑host of COP31 Türkiye. We must seize the opportunity to shape the future by acting now, to protect the health of women and girls, while tackling the root causes of climate change.

As life expectancy increases around the world, a key question remains: how can we ensure those extra years are healthy ones? In this episode of ‘When Science Finds a Way’, Alisha Wainwright explores the science of ageing with Dr Linda Partridge and Dr Mika Kivimaki. Their research examines how biological ageing can be measured and how personalised approaches to healthcare could help predict and prevent disease. The episode also explores the social side of ageing with Shamita Sharmacharja, curator of the ‘Coming of Age’ exhibition at Wellcome Collection.
