The Nature at Work + SC7 Trail Talk reinforced something we've long believed: healthy spaces make for healthier people. 🌿 We're proud to have had Matthew Kestner, PG share how McAdams is connecting people, places and nature in our projects. This work is especially meaningful to us as we continue to see how Natural Experiences positively impact how people experience the interface between nature, the built environment, health and their community for decades. Thank you to the The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities at Furman University, SC7, South Carolina Healthy Business Coalition, Nature at Work and everyone who contributed to such an immersive experience. We're excited to keep exploring the power of nature and its role in shaping stronger communities.
What happens when we don't just talk about the science of nature and wellbeing, but take a few minutes to experience it? This week's Nature at Work + SC7 Trail Talk at The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities at Furman University explored the growing body of research connecting nature, health, resilience, and wellbeing. The program included accessible lightning talks from faculty at Furman University and McAdams, followed by an outdoor experience where participants could choose between guided rest and reflection or a quiet nature walk around Furman's campus. As part of the experience, participants completed a brief informal reflection before and after spending time outdoors — not as formal research, but as a way to make the science personal. Self-reported perceptions of focus, alertness, calmness, and mood all improved after the outdoor activity. Just for fun, participants tried their hand at a brief memory exercise before and after spending time in nature. Collectively, we did better at that task after the walk or guided meditation outside. Our group was deeply curious about the impacts of spending time in nature — an inherent sample bias, to be sure, but also what made the conversation so rich. We had a genuinely compelling conversation about how even brief nature-based experiences can support wellbeing during the workday. Thank you to the Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities for hosting, McAdams for sponsoring, and the South Carolina Healthy Business Coalition and SC7 for partnering in this work. And thank you to Mike Winiski, Elizabeth Holt, PhD, Meghan Slining, Ph.D., Matthew Kestner, PG, Susan Carter, Michelle McCollum, and everyone who joined us for such a thoughtful and experiential afternoon. This is exactly the kind of work Nature at Work was created to support: practical, research-informed, place-based, and focused on how healthy places can support healthy people. The Power of Well-Being: River Walk at Central Park 🌿 To celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, we're highlighting The Power of Well-Being through River Walk at Central Park in Flower Mound, Texas. This 158-acre mixed-use development was thoughtfully designed to bring people together by blending residential, retail, dining, office, medical, and recreational spaces into one vibrant destination. At the heart of the development is a tree-lined waterway surrounded by 46.5 acres of parks and open space, creating opportunities to walk, relax, gather, and enjoy the outdoors. Scenic trails, waterfront views, public gathering spaces and other community amenities support both physical and mental well-being while encouraging everyday connection. By integrating places to live, work, shop, and play, River Walk demonstrates how thoughtful planning and inviting public spaces can enhance quality of life. McAdams is proud to have supported the planning, design, engineering, and development efforts that helped bring this vision to life, creating a destination where people can thrive for years to come. 💚 #ParksAndRecreationMonth #PowerOfWellBeing #RiverWalkAtCentralPark #FlowerMoundTX #HealthyCommunities #McAdams
