Who among us hasn’t dreamed of dropping everything and escaping to a cabin in the woods? But how many of us could actually make it work? When Patrick Hutchison left his office job to restore a rundown cabin in the Pacific Northwest, he quickly realized he was far out of his depth. In conversation with Katie Campbell, Hutchison will share stories from six years of renovations, mishaps, and hard-earned lessons from life off the grid. Find out more and RSVP today! Join KUOW’s Katie Campbell in conversation with Maya Jewell Zeller author of Raised by Ferns on Thursday, August 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library. How do we define home — and ourselves? Born in a Pacific Northwest gas station to itinerant, countercultural parents, Maya Jewell Zeller grew up in a world shaped by poverty, wildness, and fierce self-reliance. In conversation with Katie Campbell, Zeller will reflect on her journey from what she calls “a feral girl” searching for both freedom and safety to a middle-class adult reckoning with identity, belonging, and uneasy privilege. Join KUOW’s Katie Campbell in conversation with Amy Bowers Cordalis author of The Water Remembers on Tuesday, September 29th at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library. In the Pacific Northwest, the story of salmon is deeply intertwined with the history of the Indigenous peoples who have long called this region home. Amy Bowers Cordalis, a member of the Yurok Tribe in Northern California, comes from generations of advocates who have fought to protect salmon and defend tribal rights to land, water, and sovereignty. In conversation with Katie Campbell, Cordalis will discuss carrying forward the Yurok Tribe’s 170-year fight for justice and environmental stewardship. Find out more and RSVP today! October

  • KUOW Book Talks with Author Anne de Marcken

Join KUOW’s Katie Campbell in conversation with Anne de Marcken author of It Lasts Forever and Then It’s Over on Wednesday, October 28th at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library. The undead narrator at the center of Anne de Marcken’s novel is adrift, having forgotten her name and much of what once made her human. Longing to be known and loved again, she journeys west in search of a place where she might recover some part of herself — accompanied all the while by an opinionated crow living in her chest. The result is a genre-defying meditation on mortality, transformation, and love. In conversation with Katie Campbell, de Marcken will explore what it means to be alive. Find out more and RSVP today!
