About the Department
The Driver Services Department is your go-to for all things related to identification and driving in Illinois.
We issue driver’s licenses, state ID cards, REAL IDs, driving permits, and Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) at 140 DMVs statewide. We also maintain the official records of all drivers, administer sanctions, manage federal highway grant funds, and license and audit commercial driving schools and their examiners.

Under Title VI of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Driver Services Department of the Illinois Secretary of State operates its programs without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability, including income level and limited English proficiency, and under the Illinois Human Rights Act operates its programs without regard to religion, order of protection, marital or military status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or unfavorable discharge from military service.
