Homicidal maniacs Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees were loosed upon theater audiences this weekend as Freddy Vs. Jason took the top spot on the box office charts. New Line Cinema's horror crossover flick took in $36 million. Friday's blackouts across the northeastern US and southern Ontario seemed to pose little problem for the gruesome twosome.

"The combination of [Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street characters] together was much more powerful than these individual franchises. This is a great way to reinvigorate the genre," said New Line's Paul Dergarabedian. In comparison, Jason X only made $6 million its opening weekend, and the previous Elm Street film opened equally poorly. Could more of Freddy and Jason be on the way?

S.W.A.T. dropped to second place this weekend with $18 million, about half its first-weekend take.

Kevin Costner's new Western adventure, Open Range, couldn't match the might of Freddy vs. Jason. It debuted in third place with $14 million.

Disney's Freaky Friday, now in its second week, came in just behind with $13 million.

MGM's Uptown Girls opened in fifth place with an $11 million take.

In sixth place was Pirates of the Caribbean, which is still sailing strong. The swashbuckling adventure added another $9 million to its box office booty, bringing its total so far to nearly $250 million. That puts it just behind Finding Nemo and The Matrix Reloaded among the year's top-grossing films.

American Wedding and Seabiscuit came in seventh and eighth, both with about $8 million.

Spy Kids 3-D earned another $5 million in its fourth week of release, and Bad Boys II took the tenth spot with $3 million.

Grind, Warner Bros.' new skateboarding film, didn't make the top ten despite a wide release. It settled for twelfth with $2.5 million in receipts.

Here's a closer look at this week's figures:
