Newsom seeks to shield California elections from federal interference before Tuesday primary

      • By HANNAH SCHOENBAUM - Associated Press
      • Updated 1 hr ago

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed legislation that aims to shield California elections from federal interference ahead of the state's primary next week. The Democratic governor said he expected President Donald Trump’s administration to try to meddle in upcoming elections. The law prohibits any person from accessing voter rolls or election technology without a court order. It also makes it a crime to knowingly take voted ballots from election officials. The law took effect Wednesday. A White House spokesperson responded that Trump is committed to ensuring Americans have full confidence in elections. Federal officials have said they have no plans to send immigration agents to polling locations.
