Research indicates that specific disciplines/learning areas have distinctly different literacy requirements in terms of the kinds of texts used and how these are constructed and interpreted (Green, 1988; Heselden & Staples, 2002;
Shaddock & Freebody, 2005; Staples & Heselden, 2001; Unsworth, 1999), and there is increasing recognition of the significance of these varied literacy demands to learners' engagement, school success and identity development (Draper, 2010; Green, 1988; Lee, 1996;
Shaddock & Freebody, 2005; Unsworth, 1999).

Extensive literature on subject-specific literacies identifies the differential literacy requirements of disciplines or school subjects, these differences inlcuding variable text-types and genres, vocabulary and terminology, classes or taxonomies of words and subject fields, variable modalities of texts, and use of word and non-word text formats (see
Shaddock & Freebody, 2005; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008; Shanahan, Shanahan & Misischa, 2011).
A growing body of research has reported negative consequences of such work demands in a significant proportion of human service workers including social workers and counselors (Burke et al.), teachers (Greenglass, Burke, & Ondrack, 1990), employees in nursing homes or similar facilities (
Shaddock, Hill, & Van Limbeek, 1998), psychologists (Kramen-Kahn & Hansen, 1998), and psychiatrists (Thomsen, Soares, Nolan, Dallender, & Arnetz, 1999).
