Myofibers were
multinucleated. Haematoxylin and eosin stained muscle cross sections showed nuclei positioned at periphery.
However, microscopies finds also revealed the presence of granulomatous formations with macrophages with large eosinophilic and foamy cytoplasm and
multinucleated giant cells.
In contrast, hCG and inhibin are positive only in scattered
multinucleated tumor cells.
In early lesions, scalloped macrophages dominate the histology, but most well-developed lesions have a mixture of the above.14 Immunohistochemical studies show negative staining for S-100, CD1a, and Birbeck granules, and positive staining for the surface markers CD68 and factor XIIIa.15 Our patient had typical lesion involving typical sites and histopathology of skin lesions showed foamy histiocytes and occasional
multinucleated giant cell in dermis.
Percentages of seminiferous tubules containing
multinucleated giant cells
Histological aspect of granulomas at 28, 77 and 90 days post-infection: At 28 dpi, liver granulomas had focal lesions with three well-defined areas: an internal zone containing residues of the parasite, a middle zone with the presence of epithelioid macrophages and Langhans giant cells (
multinucleated) and an external area with some lymphocytes and few eosinophils (Fig.
(a) Skin biopsy of the scalp showing sarcoidal granulomas with
multinucleated giant cells in the dermis with absence of hair follicles (x20 view).
B) Ziehl-Neelsen stain shows numerous acid-fast bacilli in the cytoplasm of macrophages and
multinucleated giant cells (arrowheads).
Foci of acute and granulomatous inflammation were appreciated (Figure 5) along with epithelioid histiocytes and
multinucleated giant cells (Figure 6).
Histologic examination of the mass showed a nodule of amorphous debris and fibrinous material with histiocytes and
multinucleated giant cells without organism, consistent with a cardiac CAT (Figure 5).
The histopathological study evidences severe mononuclear infiltrate of the dura and
multinucleated giant cells associated with the wall small caliber vessel.
She underwent an open biopsy which showed cyst-like spaces filled with blood surrounded by fibrous septa composed of a cellular proliferation of bland fibroblasts, scattered
multinucleated giant cells, and chronic inflammation consistent with the diagnosis of an ABC (Figure 4).
Histological examination of omental and peritoneal biopsies disclosed the presence ofnoncaseating, nonnecrotic, sarcoid type granulomas containing
multinucleated giant cells (Figures 1 and 2).
Five years after the patient's death, histopathological reexamination suggested the diagnosis of basidiobolomycosis based on the presence of eosinophilic and giant
multinucleated cells mixed with septate hyphal fragments and the Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon.
