The White House is the pre-War residence of the President of the United States in Washington, D.C. in Fallout 3.

Background[edit]

The White House pool underwent renovations in 2042. Several deck chairs were sold to Whitespring Presidential Cottage as a result of the renovations.[1] R. Villanueva served as the White House communications director from 2066 to 2069.[2]

In 2077, the President left the White House and secretly began living on Control Station ENCLAVE, a Poseidon Energy oil rig off the coast of San Francisco.[3] News outlets began to speculate as to their wherabouts.[4] The White House Press Corps was disbanded around the same time.[3] By October 2077, the West Wing of the building had been empty for over half a year, with nobody having lived or worked there politically for several months.[3] Only a small crew of manual laborers remained on staff to maintain the property.[3]

The building was destroyed when the bombs fell and is now radioactive.[5][6] Glowing Ones walk amongst the debris.[Pub 1]

Publications[edit]

The White House was destroyed when the bombs fell. The only access point is a manhole to a Utility Tunnel in the northwest part of the courtyard.Fallout 3 Official Game Guide: First Edition - Tour of the Capital Wasteland

Layout[edit]

The way to the White House is to exit the Penn. Ave Northwest station in Pennsylvania Avenue, go up the stairs, and proceed straight until one reaches the building to the north (White House Plaza). A manhole cover on the sidewalk at the southwest corner of the building leading to the White House Utility Tunnels will be visible. This manhole connects to the White House Utility area.

Loot[edit]

  • Three Mini Nukes - At the top of the stairs, located left of the entrance.
  • Fat Man - Next to the three Mini Nukes.
  • A copy of Pugilism Illustrated - In the Utility tunnel on a table near a Workbench in the southeast corner of the local map.

Notes[edit]

  • This area is radioactive (6-7 rads/second) as soon as one progresses through the door out of the utility tunnel to Pennsylvania Avenue.
  • It is possible for the two Skeletons placed with the three Mini Nukes and two RadAways to glitch and knock the items either under or out of the map so they become unattainable.
  • In the Mothership Zeta add-on, an Alien Captive Recorded Log subtitles state that the United States had 38 ICBMs on alert and ready to fire when instructed to do so by the White House.[7]

Appearances[edit]

The White House appears in Fallout 3 and is mentioned in Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and in the Fallout Television Series.

Behind the Scenes[edit]

  • The White House is based on the government building of the same name.
  • Istvan Pely stated that the development team at one point realized that they hadn't done the White House yet and that they were running out of time, and thus decided to place a radioactive crater in its place, as "the White House would have been the first thing they took off."[Dev 1]

  1. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide p. 430: "15.02: WHITE HOUSE UTILITY TUNNEL": "The White House was destroyed when the bombs fell. The only access point is a manhole to a Utility Tunnel in the northwest part of the courtyard. At the crossroads is a rusting car. It appears a lunatic attempted to leap the car using a bike (which is farther up the tunnel). Outside, you appear in the ruins of the White House, still highly radioactive. The only living remains are a pair of frightening Glowing Ones. Face them, or flee to one of the concrete "island" on the column supports that are still standing, and blast them from here for some RadAway, and a grand prize."

Istvan Pely: "While we're working on- on DC, we realize that we had not done the uh... the White House yet, and we didn't really have room on the schedule to- to do the White House. We had done a lot of the other... landmarks and- and did ruins of them um... scattered throughout the city but that was kind of the major one, and we were kind of running out of time, like, well, what do we do? It's like, just put a crater. The White House would have been the first thing they took off, so let's just wipe- it doesn't exist here. Uh... it was sort of an Indiana Jones, you know, shoot the guy the whip sort of moment for us but it- it did the trick and I think people got a- got a kick out of that."
