The Phoropter and Phoropter Prototype are constructible settlement objects in the Fallout 4 DLC Vault-Tec Workshop.
Background[edit]
The Phoropter was developed by Vault-Tec Research and Development teams for use in Vault 88. Dr. Braun instructed the teams that "the challenge I put before you is to find a way to turn a simple eye exam into something that furthers Vault-Tec's ambitions. The phoropter is an excellent delivery mechanism because it's infrequent enough and arcane enough that if anything slightly irregular occurs, no one would know."[1] A team led by Ted instead made the "Improved Eye Care" variant, an enhanced tool for optometrists, leading the head of R&D to request his team to be reassigned.[2]
A second R&D team created a Subliminal Message variant that displays series of microflash images which, when played repeatedly and in a loop, had a statistically significant positive effect on the test subjects' view of the Vault, Vault-Tec, and the Overseer specifically.[3] The same team failed to create an eye drop formula that was both effective and didn't cause long-lasting eye trauma.[3]
Another team, named Team Walrus, created a small MRI specifically designed to fit in the phoropter that could read a test subject's mind and show an actual picture of what they're thinking about.[4] They started from a standard Rorschach Test where hundreds of "volunteers" could reliably identify the images with 71% accuracy.[4]
Gameplay[edit]
Assigning a settler to the phoropter will generate between 5 and 15 happiness for the settlement. The amount of happiness generated, crafting and power requirements for this object depends on the choices made during the Vision of the Future quest.
All four versions improve the Sole Survivor's Perception by 1 after use. This effect lasts until a different item of exercise equipment item is used.
The following variants can be crafted:
- Prototype – This variant is only available during Vision of the Future and can be parametered through a terminal.
- Subliminal messaging – Produces 15 happiness and requires 6 power, but has a mortality chance of 2% per day.
- Vault monitoring – Produces 5 happiness and requires 3 power, but has a mortality chance of 1% per day.
- Improved eye care – Produces 10 happiness and requires 3 power, with no chance of mortality.

Notes[edit]
Setting subliminal messaging/vault monitoring for the Phoropter, along with shock parameters/buffout parameters for the Power Cycle 1000, or mood enhancer/appetite suppressant for the Soda Fountain will cause the first settler that was recruited to the vault to leave in protest.
