Muro - Kirin Ichiban X DJ Muro Limited Edition 12
posted a review of Muro - Kirin Ichiban X DJ Muro Limited Edition 12" EP. 5 months ago
Side A features two fairly minimal trip-hop cuts. Side B is the more interesting, featuring two J-Pop covers, one in a jazz-dance style, the other slow boogie. Both are well produced. These are featured on another Muro comp from 2017, Japanese Sounds... See full review

Great to have this classic from Kerri, but less than convinced about the pressing. The A side took multiple cleans before it was even playable, and then still with some clicks and surface noise. B-side instrumental was better though

Yes, thank goodness for the B-Side, or else this one would be going back. Wonder if the original / source of the A was also distorted?

Pretty decent pressing. A little on the quiet side, but clean with no distortion. The albums itself is a goodie from Caetano - beautifully written and produced
Herbert* - Part One
posted a review of Herbert* - Part One. over 5 years ago
Picked this up and it had me smiling from ear to ear. Herbert has a way of hearing sounds that is utterly unique. Only he could take João Gilberto singing "Ohla que coisa" from Garota de Ipanema and translate it into "Oo Licky". B-side "See You On... See full review

Don't know anything about this label or how legit this pressing is, but the sound is decent. No warps, pops, clicks, or distortion (beyond what may have been present in the original). Disappointed with the back cover though, as it doesn't have the... See full review

Great album, solid beats, and Jay and Jay-Z make a great pair. Hova hasn't sounded this sharp for years. Cannot listen to "Shiny Suit Theory" without singing this though https://www.discogs.com/Pete-Rock-CL-Smooth-I-Got-A-Love/master/39516

No comments - wow! This is one of Catano's best albums. Clever, poetic lyrics, impeccable musicianship and arrangements, not to mention seriously funky. Essential

Agree with Widgery - be great to have these extended versions on wax. Something More is a modern disco masterpiece and deserves a 12" release. It would be great if Skint re-released Simulation and Jealousy too. These are all brilliantly produced,... See full review

I have a mis-press of this, where A1 is in fact Patti Drew - Sufferer https://www.discogs.com/Patti-Drew-Sufferer-Where-Is-Daddy/release/4365010
Don't know if they were all pressed like that? Turns out the Patti Drew track is pretty funky!

Sure is Pure version has dated more than the original version from 1983. Tinny, 1990s glam house. Fortunately, they had the good sense to include the Levan remix on the B-side.

Surprised there's no mention yet for the Extended mix of Teachers. One of the best DP tracks, but sadly too short on Homework. Here, the extended intro makes it more playable and emphasises the Zapp-like funkiness. Sadly, Around the World is a... See full review
Gene Farris - Mainline Disco

The re-edit of Black Ivory's Mainline could be a useful tool to mix with the original, as it maintains a similar tempo. The 3 other tracks fly along at a rather relentless 131 BPM, and gain a bit of funk if pitched down.

Sound quality isn't great here, especially Dancer, which distorts. Killer tune though

Saw them live last night and was blown away. As compelling a fusion of raw, jacking house and jazz as you are likely to find. This release is more a document of the live set than a stand alone studio release in its own right. Sound quality is also not... See full review

For some inexplicable reason, Mastercuts released this collection with "later" versions of Everybody Loves the Sunshine and Running Away, which are tacky, dated and soulless. A disaster.

Took a punt on this reissue, as I haven't been able to find a copy of this for love or money (and that includes in Brazil). Pressing is fine, but it does sound like it was mastered from vinyl (some clicks and hiss I wouldn't expect from a new vinyl... See full review

Bought this mostly for Mortal Trance, but ended up greatly impressed by the EP as a whole. Consistent quality throughout. Boo just gets so much swing, pitching the tracks wonderfully between deep and funky. Classic Chi-Town.

No reviews for this mix? Really? If there's a mid-90s D&B mix which has stood the test of time, it's this one. Great selection and mix from Scotty, warming things up nicely with rollers from Krust and Dillinja before all hell breaks loose with... See full review

Real shame that the conservative hip-hop market couldn't get their heads around this LP. Along with The Roots' "Phrenology" from the same year, it tried to push the sonic boundaries of hip-hop, bringing in psychedelic rock, soul and swing influences -... See full review
