Welcome to Butte-Silver Bow — proudly known as Butte, America!

Our community is built on a rich heritage and a resilient spirit. From its beginnings as a mining camp in the 1860s, Butte quickly grew into the nation’s largest supplier of copper, earning the nickname “The Richest Hill on Earth.” Generations of immigrants from Ireland, China, Lebanon, Austria, Greece, Italy, Mexico, and many other countries came here to work in the mines, shaping a diverse and vibrant community whose legacy still defines us today. Our historic headframes dot the landscape as reminders of the hard work, innovation, and sacrifice that built this city.

We are proud to be a consolidated city-county government, led by an elected Chief Executive and twelve Council of Commissioners who represent our districts. Together, we are committed to honoring our past while building a bright future. That means protecting our land, water, and people, supporting responsible modern mining practices, and embracing sustainable development that creates new opportunities for residents and businesses alike.

Butte-Silver Bow is more than its mining history. We are home to the nation’s largest National Historic District, countless recreation opportunities, fine dining, sports, entertainment, thriving small businesses, and year-round events. As President Theodore Roosevelt once said during his visit in 1903, “I like Butte. I like the people of Butte. I haven’t had a heartier welcome or a happier time.” His words, echoed by many others, capture the warmth and pride of our community.
