Zeekr history

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group created the Zeekr brand as an upscale marque within its portfolio. It launched it in 2021 as an answer to the rapidly changing global automotive arena. While the Zeekr brand is new on the market, its parent company is not. It has decades of experience and a solid automotive background. Geely evolved from a domestic Chinese car manufacturer into one of the most significant global automakers. Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Lynk & Co., Zeekr, and Geely are all part of the same group, and each brand has a specific target segment. While Lotus focuses on sports cars, Polestar targets performance-oriented niche vehicles, and Volvo caters to family buyers, Zeekr aims to attract customers across multiple segments. It has produced electric performance cars, luxury sedans, and SUVs, while introducing advanced technologies throughout its lineup. From the outset, leadership continuity was a defining feature of the brand. Its top managers were drawn from Geely's senior ranks, bringing extensive experience from the automotive industry. As a result, unlike other new brands that struggled with early missteps, Zeekr's products were well executed from day one. Furthermore, its full-size luxury SUVs and autonomous vehicle projects surprised competitors. It often became difficult to determine whether Zeekr was primarily a technology company focused on vehicles or a car manufacturer that integrated the most advanced technologies available on the market—and, when something was missing, developed it in-house. While most of its products are battery-electric vehicles, Zeekr has also introduced a plug-in hybrid model, the 9X full-size luxury SUV. In addition, it has developed autonomous vehicles for ride-sharing applications, while continuing to work on driverless solutions for the future. This forward-thinking strategy has helped the brand expand into new markets and establish itself as a serious competitor. Recognizing that design is a crucial element of a vehicle, sometimes even more important than the drivetrain or interior features, Geely appointed a high-profile designer with prior experience at luxury brands such as Audi, Bentley, and Mercedes-Benz. As a result, Zeekr's cars began to compete directly with established European premium brands. At the same time, electric motors and battery systems were at the forefront of Zeekr's technology offering and helped convince customers with strong performance figures. Technically, Zeekr uses a Geely-developed electric vehicle platform engineered to support a wide range of body styles, battery capacities, and drivetrain configurations. This strategy allows the brand to deliver premium vehicles at prices below many of its direct competitors. The Zeekr 001, the brand's first production model, set the tone for everything that followed. Introduced as a sleek shooting-brake-style vehicle rather than a conventional sedan or SUV, it signaled Zeekr's willingness to challenge segment norms. As large-scale autonomous driving continues to evolve, this approach positions Zeekr as a brand capable of delivering advanced, software-ready vehicle platforms rather than just traditional consumer products. Sales growth has been another key milestone in Zeekr's short history. In addition, just a few years after the brand's launch, it surpassed the 200,000 deliveries benchmark in a single year. Furthermore, with over 30,000 monthly deliveries, it gained a seat at the table of the most important EV manufacturers, and that helped Zeekr secure a public listing in the United States.  What started shyly as a premium electric car brand for the Geely group, it became a force on the market. Even though it didn't have a century of experience behind it, it convinced customers looking for high-tech vehicles and a forward-thinking approach. At the end of the day, it wasn't just about how fast, how luxurious, and how well-equipped a Zeekr was; it was about how well the automaker fulfilled customers' ideas about a premium car.
