Ink on the Edge

A self paced course exploring alternative suminagashi, minimalist markmaking and simple bookmaking.

I’m currently putting together a new online course exploring an alternative, contemporary approach to the traditional Japanese marbling technique of suminagashi.

In this class, we’ll move slowly and intentionally — playing with floating ink on water, transferring those patterns onto hand-dyed papers and fabrics, and transforming the results into a hand-bound art book.

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

* Create expressive suminagashi patterns on both fabric and paper

* Prepare and use hand-dyed textiles in your marbling practice

* Mix up your own botanical ink recipes for natural dyeing

* Embrace unpredictability and work with the natural movement of water

* Transform your marbled papers and fabrics into a simple hand-bound book

* Build a repeatable studio practice you can return to again and again

This is not a traditional, rule-bound approach — it’s a permission-based, exploratory practice rooted in curiosity and material sensitivity.
