Because tech platforms extract value from local journalism — without sustaining it — and this is why community newspapers still matter.
  • Fact: 2,900+ U.S Local papers closed since 2005
  • Fact: 70% of newspaper ad revenue lost to platforms
    • Zero-click answers steal traffic
      • AI search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.) summarize local news stories at the top of results pages — readers get the headline and key facts without ever clicking through to the paper's website. No visit = no ad revenue, no subscription conversion.
    • Decades of reporting used without compensation
      • AI models are trained on years of locally reported stories — school board coverage, crime reports, election results — scraped without payment or credit. The paper does the work; the AI gets the value.
    • AI invents local “facts”
      • Without a real local reporter, AI search may fabricate meeting outcomes, misidentify officials, or recycle outdated information. Local papers are the only check on this — but only if they survive.
    • Local News buried under viral content
      • Facebook, Instagram, and X optimize for outrage and engagement — not civic information. Local newspaper posts reach a fraction of followers. Organic reach for news pages has collapsed since 2018.
    • Local ad dollars flow to Meta & Google
      • The same local car dealerships and grocery stores that once filled newspaper pages now spend exclusively on Meta and Google ads — targeting tools the papers can't match without that revenue to invest in tech.
    • Unverified community "news" fills the void
      • Facebook Groups and Nextdoor spread unverified rumors faster than reporters can fact-check. When local papers shrink, bad information rushes in — and platforms aren't accountable for it.
WHAT ONLY LOCAL NEWSPAPERS PROVIDE
  • Accountability reporting
    • School budgets, city council votes, county sheriff conduct — no AI or algorithm is attending those meetings.
  • Community Identity
    • High school sports, local obituaries, business openings — the connective tissue of a community.
  • Original source material
    • Every AI summary of a local story traces back to a reporter who made the call. Remove the reporter, remove the story.*
  • Economic anchor
    • Studies show communities without local papers see higher government costs, lower voter turnout, and reduced civic engagement.

We believe local journalism is worth paying for — and so do our subscribers. Over the past two decades, advertising alone has become an unreliable way to fund a newsroom, so we've built a subscription model that lets our reporters, editors, and photographers focus on what they do best: bringing you the hyperlocal news you can't get anywhere else.
Creating a login account is free, but you'll need an active subscription linked to the email address you're signing in with. To check your subscription status, click the login dropdown and select Manage Account.
Our content is available to subscribers only. To access articles, simply log in with the email address tied to your active subscription.
