An excellent and comprehensive book, more like a major Reference Resource.
Beautiful illustrations, well laid out with useful appendices for more reading and viewing of source material
At 798 pages, Amazon, you are a bit too quick off the mark for a complete review, as my wife and I are fighting over who has possession.
We are reading selected chapters about stories that are relevant to something we are reading or watching, and so far, we are extremely satisfied

Really good!
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2014Format: PaperbackSuch a good book, was very helpful for a class I took over the winter. Shopping was fast and didn't have to wait around for it. My class is done but I may keep it until the end of the rental just to read it in my spare time :)

I enjoyed this textbook!
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2013Format: PaperbackI took a Classical Mythology course for a general credit and the instructor used this textbook. I found this textbook really interesting and easy to read, which is hard to say about a lot of textbooks. I know it was because of this that I did well in the class. The way the information was presented made sense and was easy to follow.

If you have to buy this then do it.
Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2019Format: PaperbackI bought this as supplemental reading for the audible great courses lives of the famous Greeks. The prose is dense and not at all inspiring. There is a lot of information so it may serve as an adequate reference text but I do not expect to use this as pleasure reading. I would only recommend this to people who have to buy it for a class. Even the I suspect the internet might be better and cheaper.

Reviewed in Canada on June 4, 2012Format: PaperbackThis is a very complete and insightful overview of Greek mythology, divided into logical chapters. The excerpts from classical works can be a bit long sometimes, but I think that just reflects the author's enthusiasm for the subject. Lots of great pictures of related artwork with full explanations.

Jess Sheridan1 out of 5 starsVerified PurchaseExpensive and horribly sexist
Reviewed in Canada on January 24, 2014Format: PaperbackOne of the worst required readings I had throughout my entire university career. The author had a huge bias agains the pantheon of Greek and Roman goddesses often inserting false claims about their roles or origins and treating them like fact. The book, overall, was not exceptionally well organized and for the most part had very poor flow. Key facts were often buried in walls of text that could have been condensed
