Stratosfear Review by John Bush

Stratosfear, the last Tangerine Dream album by the great Baumann/Franke/Froese threesome, shows the group's desire to advance past their stellar recent material and stake out a new musical direction while others were still attempting to come to grips with Phaedra and Rubycon. The album accomplishes its mission with the addition of guitar (six- and 12-string), grand piano, harpsichord, and mouth organ to the usual battery of moogs, Mellotrons, and e-pianos. The organic instruments take more of a textural role, embellishing the effects instead of working their own melodic conventions. Stratosfear is also the beginning of a more evocative approach for Tangerine Dream. Check the faraway harmonica sounds and assortment of synth-bubbles on "3 AM at the Border of the Marsh From Okefenokee" or the somber chords and choral presence of "The Big Sleep in Search of Hades." The title track opener is the highlight though, beginning with a statuesque synthesizer progression before unveiling an increasingly hypnotic line of trance.

This is Tangerine Dreams Masterpiece....hear it and you will be blown away: hear it as loud as possible...the only thing: it is sad that no 5.1 SACD exists...

In September ’75, former underground darlings Pink Floyd published “Wish You Were Here” to gigantic acclaim and mass success.

Former avant-garde artists themselves, TD saw no reason why they couldn’t please that public too. They only thing they needed to do was to go further in the direction of Ricochet : more melodies, more conventional instruments mixed with their now trademark Moog arpeggios. They could even … issue singles ! And aim the American market, why not?

They even asked to Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason to mix the album, but the result didn’t please Froese. Ultimately it worked as planned : Stratosfear is their best-known album, together with Ricochet. I’m happy for the band, and for those who discovered TD on this occasion.

On the LP’s side 1, we have two prog-pop pieces with bass and guitars, and they were edited as singles (they did not chart). On the second side, the accent is more put on trippy ambiances with semi-classical melodies. They toured USA. And considered to add voices (but that will be for later).

Robert Christgau wrote at that time that “these guys should leave the accessibility to Kraftwerk”. Yes, because we lost a unique and brave band capable of creating soundscapes as big as planets. Go backwards, to Rubycon and then … Zeit. If you dare.

Another transitional affair that sort of fall between two chairs by neither reaching the heigths of their "old-school" style (Rubycon), nor the new (Force Majeure, Tangram).
By no means a bad album, in fact a rather pleasant one! Just not superb.

The project's 1976 album, Stratosfear, contains an E-minor Funk title track influenced by Led Zeppelin, a dirge with flute and guitar picking ("The Big Sleep in Search of Hades") and a final up-tempo rush that morphs into solitary piano worship ("Invisible Limits").

Highlights: "Invisible Limits".
