We are a group of DJs/show hosts for whom "music is the message". The core group are former (traditional) jazz hosts at an Atlanta radio station who have decided we want to keep the music alive through Mixcloud. Joining us are experts in blues, blues rock, old school R&B, funk, and soul. Bottom line is we all share a common goal to continue to present REAL music to our past, present, and future listeners. The podcast series, Jazz Backstory, is based on the holdings of the Fillius Jazz Archive located at Hamilton College, in Clinton, New York. Established in 1995, and dedicated in 2013 in honor of Milton F. Fillius, Jr. ’44 and Nelma “Nikki” Nenneau Fillius, the Fillius Jazz Archive holds a collection of over 440 videotaped interviews with jazz musicians, arrangers, writers and producers. The wide-ranging collection includes interviews with sidemen, soloists and band leaders who have performed from the 1920s through the present. Established in 1995, and dedicated in 2013 in honor of Milton F. Fillius, Jr. ’44 and Nelma “Nikki” Nenneau Fillius, the Fillius Jazz Archive holds a collection of over 440 videotaped interviews with jazz musicians, arrangers, writers and producers. The wide-ranging collection includes interviews with sidemen, soloists and band leaders who have performed from the 1920s through the present. Jazz Backstory podcast episodes will feature interview excerpts focused on topics inherent to the creative life. Artists, both famous and unsung, relate these tales in their own jazz inflected vocabulary. Original music and commentary from the host help set the tone, both educational and swinging. Monk Rowe, creator of the podcast series, Jazz Backstory, and the Joe Williams Director of the Fillius Jazz Archive, conducted the majority of the interviews and has presented programs about the resource at conferences for the Jazz Education Network, the Music Library Association, and the International Society of Music Educators. Monk co-authored with Romy Britell the book Jazz Tales From Jazz Legends on Hamilton’s Couper Press and created the edX online course, “Jazz: The Music, The Stories, The Players” in collaboration with members of the Library and Instructional Technology Services at Hamilton College. He is an active performer on saxophone and piano and has composed numerous works for both jazz and classical ensembles. About the Fillius Jazz Archive at Hamilton College: Established in 1995, and dedicated in 2013 in honor of Milton F. Fillius, Jr. ’44 and Nelma “Nikki” Nenneau Fillius, the Fillius Jazz Archive holds a collection of videotaped interviews with jazz musicians, arrangers, writers and critics. The collection generally focuses on artists associated with mainstream jazz and the swing era. Former members of bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton and the Dorsey brothers are well represented. Significant soloists and arrangers from small ensembles dating from the 1930s have also been interviewed. The holdings are particularly viable for material pertaining to the learning process employed by young jazz musicians prior to the establishment of jazz education programs, and the realities of making a career in the jazz world. Other significant topics addressed include stories of life on the road and in the active New York City recording scene as well as racial relations (past and present) in jazz. Interviews with Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Clark Terry and Milt Hinton were conducted by vocalist Joe Williams.

The goal here is to have a casual but thorough conversation about jazz albums—something more along the lines of chatting about movies or athletes with friends than attending a lecture or seminar. Why "bastard"? Jazz music and musicians are under incredible economic and cultural stress. It's hard to get a hearing (or get paid) for making this beautiful music, and as a result, sometimes every release is treated with kid gloves, like an orchard that might wilt if ... show more

But music only survives when listeners passionately engage with it. We try to be honest about our feelings—our likes and dislikes—on the show. Thoughtful, but honest. What makes an album—out of the hundreds released every year—really grab you? Why does another one—technically excellent though it may be—fail to connect? These are the questions we bastards ask. I can reach for the tracks of artists who were born at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as those who started their careers in the 21st century. Looking for compelling sounds, I explore not only various areas of the mainstream, but also jazz peripheries, including acid jazz, jazz rock, ethno jazz, nu jazz or third stream. Obviously, the program will include bebop, hard bop and post-bop, cool jazz, avant-garde jazz and free jazz, modal and progressive jazz, soul jazz and swing. The ... show more

A few years ago, in a conversation with a colleague of mine after a gig, we realized that our generation gleaned much of our knowledge of the history of jazz music from reading the liner notes off the backs of LPs. Today my students have fluid access to more recordings than they could ever possibly listen to, but they often know little about the musicians who play on the recordings, why the recordings were created, or what they are about. In the era of iTunes and Spotify, the liner notes that provide this information are not easily available when downloading ... show more

In thinking about this void of knowledge, which I feel is a real lack of connection between the artist and listener, I conceived of a podcast/radio program intended to serve as a tool to fill in the gaps in this lack of knowledge, that additionally would provide an artist the opportunity to reveal the humanity behind the music. This project is an extension of my creative research, in that I believe that I have an obligation to this music and to my students to make connections between the artist and listener.

Therefore this podcast will feature a mix of Jazz from the United States and the rest of the world to show that there exists a continuous exchange and cross-pollination between these two worlds. One Man's Jazz has been in existence since 1999. I had always wanted to try my hand at doing radio because I loved jazz, had too many records, was active in it as a performer, and I was working as an artist representative and manager for primarily jazz artists. And apparently I have a "radio" voice. Ha! So when a new local college station was looking for volunteers, I jumped at the chance. I was so excited the day of my first show that I left the house wearing my house slippers. That excitement has not left, and ... show more

I had always wanted to try my hand at doing radio because I loved jazz, had too many records, was active in it as a performer, and I was working as an artist representative and manager for primarily jazz artists. And apparently I have a "radio" voice. Ha! So when a new local college station was looking for volunteers, I jumped at the chance. I was so excited the day of my first show that I left the house wearing my house slippers. That excitement has not left, and even though I tired of the college scene, I decided to head for the world of extraterrestrial radio and join Taint Radio in 2012, where a group of passionate programmers could freely program whatever the hell they like, right up until Taint Radio closed operations in April 2024. And I still do. My tastes in the music have changed considerably since those first days of Brubeck and early Miles and Coltrane. Nowadays I'm all about expanding the palette, looking at artists from other countries besides North America, searching beyond the mainstream, and focusing on moving the music forward. I relish my time doing One Man's Jazz, because it really is all about the music and the people who make it. I hope you'll join me once in a while here on AAJ, the show website or Mixcloud.com.
