Special Battle Simulation Exercise


The Special Battle Simulation Exercise ((とく)(しゅ)(せん)(とう) シミュレーション (えん)(しゅう), Tokusyu Sentō Shimyurēshon Ensyū ?)[1] or more commonly known as the Special Battle Sim ((とく)(しゅ)(せん)(とう) シミュ, Tokusyu Sentō Shimyu ?)[1] is a turn-based tactical game developed for Phase 1 of the Away Mission Test, involving agent-designed trion soldiers.[2]

Match Rules

rules list in Chapter 238.[3]

  • The only units usable in the Special Battle Simulation are Trion Soldiers.
  • The combined cost of all deployed units must fall within the squad budget of 12,000 on day 5[3], and later 18,000 on day 6.[4]
  • Multiple of the same unit may deployed, but each squad member's individual creation must be used in every match (at least one of each unit).
  • When a given unit is defeated, its creation cost (and point value) is unknown.
  • Each match last five turns.
  • If the final gap in points is 2,000 or greater, the squad with more points wins.
  • If the gap in points is less than 2,000, the match will end in a draw.
  • on Day 6 the margin got increased to 3,000 points.[4]

Additionally Data picked up by sensors is shared between all units.[5]

Body Settings

There are two settings that can be changed.[7]

the unit's size can change from 1 to 5, with 3 being a bit bigger than a person.[7]

Additionally the movement type can be selected[7] with different leg types give different stat bonuses[8][9], and penalties.[9] with them being

  • 2 Legs - +1 to Attack, Defense, and Evasion[9]
  • 4 Legs (Beast) - +1 to Action Token, Support and Evasion[9]
  • 4 Legs (Insectoid) - +1 Action Token, Attack, and Dexterity[9]
  • 6 Legs (Insectoid) - +1 Action Token, and Dexterity[9]
  • Flying- Unaffected by Terrain while moving[10], however -5 Action Tokens, -2 Evasion[9] and -6 to range when fighting a ground unit[10], but the effect is reduced the closer the units are to each other.[10] additionally the trion soldier can't equip a sniper rifle.[10]

Armor/Custom

There are two settings:

armor density which ranges from 1 to 10.[11] which increases armor size and density[8], unit durability goes up while action tokens go down.[8]

While the strength of the armor isn't fully known, a unit with high amounts of armor would be able to take at least 20 Asteroid bullets.[12], but due to the additional armor being counted as part of the body, vitals strike can activate when hitting the unit, while vitals strike won't activate when hitting a shield.[13] Lastly the cost of additional armor is lower than the cost for using shield.[13]

and Custom[11] which lets the user distort, delete, divide or add body parts for the trion soldier.[14]

Stat Values

There are 6 different stat values, with the minimum depending on the stat.[8] Attack, Defense and Evasion all start at 1[8], support and technique start at 0[8], and lastly, action tokens start at -1.[8]

  • Action Tokens - Affects number of actions that can be taken in a single turn.[8]
    • Maximum number - 20[8]
  • Attack - Affects level cap of melee weapons, ranged weapons, and skills.[8]
    • Maximum number - 15[8]
  • Defense - Affects level cap of shield weapons and skills.[8]
    • Maximum number - 15[8]
  • Evasion - Affects dodge rate and level cap of skills.[8]
    • Maximum number - 15[8]
  • Support - Every 5 points added increases the number of co-op actions activated in a single turn.[8]
    • Maximum number - 15[8]
    • Co-op actions function similary to combo skills in the standard battle simulation.[15]
  • Technique - Affects level cap of ranged weapons, sniper weapons, and skills.[8]
    • Maximum number - 15[8]

Sensor

There are only 3 stats that can be changed, the minimum requirement is 0.[16] Additionally, data picked by sensors is shared between all units.[5]

  • Trion Sensor - Affects radar's detection range.[16]
    • Maximum number - 20[5]
  • Optic Sensor - Affects weapon range and scope of vision.[16]
    • Maximum number - 15[16]
  • Auditory Sensor - affects weapon range and auditory detection.[16]
    • Maximum number - 10[16]

Weapon/Skills

There are 7 different weapons[17], and 8 different skills[17], additionally leaving the unit unequipped is allowed.[18]

Weapon Options

Different weapons have different costs due to being split between their characteristics.[19] the characteristics are.

  • Blade[17] - Level cap: Attack x2[20]
    • Damage - level cap: 20[20]
    • Range - level cap: 10 (3 or 4)[20]
  • Asteroid[17] - Level cap: Attack + Technique[20]
    • Damage - level cap: 10[20]
    • Range - level cap: 10[20]
    • Ammo - level cap: 10 (30)[20][12]
    • Action Tokens used: 2[21]
  • Meteor[17]
    • Damage + Range + Ammo + Splash Damage[19]
  • Grenade[17]
    • Damage + Range + Ammo + Splash Damage[19]
    • This weapon type deals high amounts of damage, but has low range in exchange.[22]
    • This weapon type is unaffected by the flying type's penalty.[22]
  • Shield[17] - Level cap: Defense x2[18]
    • It has a higher cost than additional armor, but can be used to guard allies, and be recreated once broken.[13] In practice, squads were shown to primarily to not make a new shield when their original one broke.[13]
  • Additional Armor[17] - Level cap: 10[11]
    • a unit with high amounts of armor would be able to take at least 20 Asteroid bullets.[12]
    • Due to the additional armor being part of the unit itself, despite having a lower cost than shield, when it breaks it can't be recreated while shield can.[13] In practice, squads were shown to primarily to not make a new shield when their original one broke.[13]
    • Both the base armor, and additional armor can be modelled into anything the creator wants.[23]
    • Also due to how additional armor works, vitals strike can activate when hitting the unit's additional armor, while vitals strike won't activate when hitting a shield.[13]

Skill Options

  • Vitals Strike[17]
    • Level cap: Technique x2[24]
    • Phase 1: There is a percent chance depending on level, that the enemy will be instantly destroyed when hit with the highest chance being 10%.[24] Due to how the effect works, the skill can still activate even if the target has additional armor[25], but won't work on the target's shield.[25]
    • Phase 2: Attacks will bypass the target's armor and/or shield(s).[26]
  • Radar Stealth[17]
    • Not much is known about this skill outside of a comparison with Radar Jamming, in addition to the skill being compared to Bagworm.[27] Radar stealth seemingly only hides the unit with the skill in comparison to radar jamming hiding multiple units.[28] In the same comparison, having multiple units with radar stealth is cheaper than having only 2 units with radar jamming.[28]
  • Radar Jamming[17]
    • The unit has an Area of Effect that hides any unit inside the range from radar.[29] The downside is that it has a high cost, in addition even at a high level it only lasts 2 turns[27], however both downsides can be mitigated. While the cost for Radar Jamming is high, due to the range it is cheaper in comparison to equipping multiple units with radar stealth[28], as for the turn limit, two units with radar jamming can be used and switch which unit is using the skill.[28]
  • Optic Stealth[17] a stealth-type skill[30]
    • The skill was compared to Chameleon[27], When used a trion soldier won't automatically be targeted for one turn[30], using a weapon when the skill is active will automatically remove the effect.[30]
  • Boost Strike[17] a boost-type skill.[31]
    • Can only be equipped by 2 Legs, and 4 Legs (Beast) type units.[31] The skill gives the unit a momentary mobility boost.[31]

Creation Rules

There are a creation cost, and a squad budget.[32]

the squad budget can not be surpassed, the original budget was 12,000 day 5[3], and later 18,000 on day 6.[4]

the creation cost depends on the creation with higher stats raising the cost[8], as well as ammo[20], and with some skills having a notably high cost.[27] there is also a creation cost limit, which depends on the user's trion.[33]

someone with 2 trion has a limit of 600[33], 6 trion has a limit of 1080[33], 8 trion has a limit of 1320[33], and lastly 18 has a limit of 2520.[34] This means the equation to calculate the cost limit is:

  • (120 * Trion) + 360

Creations/Strategies

Utagawa's Squad 1

Their strategy was to make their opponent overthink while the team doesn't.[35] Due to there being no way to come up with proper strategies, and making an all-rounder who can handle anything being too expensive[36], it would be better to make a team purely geared towards offense.[36] Having the units be made for offensive is simple, in addition the design of the units can be changed to both distract the opponent, and have them guess what type of unit it is.[37]

  • Ōji theorized that Border wanted the agents to make unique designs and concepts[41], he made at least two trion soldiers that can be attached to a person. a shoulder mounted trion soldier that can snipe an enemy when exposed[41], and a unknown unit that can attach to the user's back and lift them into the air.[42]

Trivia: Kannon is the Japanese way to refer to the Buddhist, Avalokiteśvara. The story comes from the version that is more common in the east, Mahayana Buddhism. The story itself goes, that will be a state of decline that makes researching enlightenment in the person's lifetime impossible, so if you get reborn into a "pure land" it will become not only possible, but also easier to research enlightenment. The pure land itself is "run" by Buddha Abitabha, while their Assistance is Kannon (who is male in Japanese, but Female in Chinese where they are known as Guanyin).

Kodera's Squad 6

For the first day of the special battle sims, Kodera's Squad 6 used Trion Soldiers with a focus on combos[55], however they were not shown.

For the second day of the special battle sims, they were not prepared for vitals strike build when facing against Murakami's Squad 10, but later was when facing off against Suwa's Squad 7.[56]

Small, low cost Rads with a large sniper mantled on their top side. To keep the trion and time cost down for Mikumo, he used creative innovations like using a "Follow-The Leader" tactic by using the homing movement command to have multiple Rads follow the one in front of the pack[61], restricting the volume of ammo at its disposal[62], and using Radar Jamming to hide the full army count of 22.[63] The follow the leader tactic made it so that it was easier to manage all the units.[61] While fo restricting the amount of bullets, it lowered the weapon's total cost, which in turned allowed him to increase the support stat to pull off more combo moves while still remaining on a budget.[64] This required the squad to primarily attack for only two turns due to the lower ammo count[64], however when pulled off by the end of turn 3, the remaining units can handle the rest of the opposing squad.[64] This was proven with how the only losses were against Utagawa's Squad 1, who didn't give them enough time to properly form up[60], Kitazoe's Squad 4, whose trick made it hard to fight[60], and lastly Ninomiya's Squad 8 due to a bad match-up.[60]

The Jamming Specialist Unit, created by Oki but used by Ui, appears to have little in the way of offensive capabilities but it's tail resembles that of a Frequency Independent Antenna and likely gives it the radar jamming quality. Due to the jamming skill being at max level, it can jam for 2 turns, however it was later discovered you can have two jamming units constantly switch bypassing the 2 turn limitation[67], in addition due to jamming hiding multiple units off the radar, it is a cheaper alternative to using Radar stealth as you would need to equip every unit with that skill.[67]

The unit was designed to counter tank units who use additional armor by using a vitals strike build[72], in addition they were designed to be scary looking in order to get people's attention.[72] While vitals strike has a 10% chance of activating, in a set of ten, there will be a 65% chance it will activate even once[72], while the chance isn't guaranteed, a tank unit requires at least 20 asteroid bullets making it so the gamble could save ammo for other enemy units.[72] the two main downsides are that the unit's defense is weak requiring another unit to help out[72], and that vitals strike works on additional armor, but not on shield[72], however shields are seemingly too expensive to constantly remake so some squads might opt for the cheaper additional armor, so another gamble is if the other team is using shield.[13]

This unit was counted as the ace of the squad[77], similar to the unnamed group, it is a humanoid trion soldier, but for the head it is similar to appearance to Replica.[79] It has the skill, boost strike, as well as uses blades as its weapon.[80] It is purely an attacker, but in exchange for range, it has a high attack and mobility.[81]

Murakami's Squad 10 employed two different strategies. disguising their units to hide their true ability including changing their appearance[86], and how they move.[86] In addition to using a vitals strike build.[87]

It is a mid-sized, flying type trion soldier with a decent defense stat, as well as decent armor[22], while for its weapon, it uses grenades which isn't affected by the aerial range adjustment penalty.[22]

For defense, it can use shield[52], due to the range requirement, only snipers can hit its shield at all[90], in addition the sniper(s) must deal enough damage to break it, Hyuse estimates that it would require a full squad of snipers to bring down the unit[91], which Suwa's Squad 7 was seemingly the only one who were able to pull it off.[92]

While other squads could prepare more snipers to counter the flying unit, Wakamura's Squad 11 can prepare trion soldiers that can counter snipers ahead of time due to guiding the other squads into making a move they can predict.[93]

There are a few major downsides that can happen. friendly fire can happen[94], and that there is both an aerial unit action token penalty, and a size/armor penalty, so faster units can run away, resulting in a tie.[95] meaning other units have to be prepared just in case.[95] Another side effect is that if a squad wants more time working on assignments then forcing a guaranteed draw is faster than sending only the flying unit and dealing with the opponent running away[95], on the other hand, sending only the flying unit would make the squad seem too powerful, and the opposing team might go for the guaranteed draw strategy instead.[96]

The primary restriction for being able to use this strategy at all is that someone on the squad must have enough trion to make the unit, as the creator has to balance attack, defense and mobility[9], however due to Hyuse's trion level, it isn't an issue.[97]

It is a small, but powerful trion soldier that is geared towards sniping, with the damage, range and ammo stats almost being near max level.[98] The name implies it has low mobility, but it can still shoot at close range if need be.[94]

Trivia: Imo Suna is the japanese gaming term for a Camper. A camper in this context is someone who move to a spot that would make it hard for them to be spotted, but can easy kill other players.

It is a smaller, mediocre trion soldier that is geared more towards evasion[22], however it is seemingly the only other unit that has accss to shield.[99] It seemingly has a low range requiring to get up closer to its enemy[100][99][68], but its speed presumably makes up for it. Additionally, it seemingly has no melee weapons[54][77], however the unit can be seen moving alongside Spikerat.[49][99]

  • it is possible to force a guaranteed draw but making a squad worth less than the required amount[101], the points given for a tie is only worth 1/5th of the points in comparison to a win, with both teams getting the points.[101]
