Border's Side Effect Ranking.

Side Effects are extensions of human abilities which manifest in people with high amounts of Trion due to the effect of trion on the brain and sensory organs.

Side Effects (副作用(サイド エフェクト), Saido Efekuto ?) are extensions of human abilities which manifest in people with high amounts of Trion due to the effect of trion on the brain and sensory organs.[1][2]

There are two types of Side Effect Holders, those who have the ability from birth, and those who later acquired it due to an external factor, however the specific condition to manifest one is unknown, and are rare overall.[1]

Border has a makeshift ranking system depending on the rarity, but the rank doesn't equal strength[3], for example Kikuchihara was able to improve Kazama Squad's rank thanks to his enhanced hearing despite being the lowest rank of C.[3]

  • S - Extrasensory Perception ((ちょう) (かん)(かく), Chō Kankaku ?), like Jin's Foresight.[3]
  • A - Superhuman Ability ((ちょう) ()(のう), Chō Ginō ?), like Yōtarō's ability to talk to animals.[3]
  • B - Special Constitution ((とく)(しゅ) (たい)(しつ), Tokushu Taishitsu ?), like Kageura's Emotion Perception[3] and Murakami's Enhanced Sleep Learning.[3]
  • C - Enhanced Senses ((きょう)() ()(かん), Kyōka Gokan ?), like Kikuchihara's Enhanced Hearing.[3]

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Overview

[edit | edit source]

Due to the nature of Side Effects, many holders use their ability in combat, but there are multiple cases where it can be used outside of combat[3], although there are cases where the holder use their ability either purposely or accidentally without knowing it is a side effect.[3][4]

In Combat

[edit | edit source]

There are characters who use their side effect in combat, for example: one of Jin's main reasons for losing is getting too absorbed in reading the future[5], and neglecting the present.[5] Additionally, Kikuchihara became an Attacker because getting close to the enemy makes better use of his Side Effect.[6]

Tiring

[edit | edit source]

Due to the nature of some side effects, it can tire the holder out, so there are different ways for holder to help relieve them. Currently there are 3 known ways barring side effects that need the user to "activate it" like with Chika's Erasing Presence side effect.[7]

The first known way is covering the area. For example: Kageura wears a mask to not only hide his teeth[8], but also to cover up his skin.[8] While Kikuchihara grows his hair out.[9]

The second known way is that the side effect will sometimes "turn off" on its own. For example: Murakami spends some time sleeping without his Side Effect activating.[10]

The last known way is that the holder can attempt to ignore it. For example: Jin's side effect manifests as a window inside his mind that he can't turn off[11], but can make an effort to ignore it.[11]

Side Effect Holders

Each Side Effect name links to the respective character's ability page which has more details

The list is ordered by their squad's ranking at the end of the most recent season of rank wars.

  • Tsukihiko Amō - Name Unknown ((しょう)(さい)()(めい), Shōsai Fumei Lit. Details Unknown ?), but it lets him View others' fighting ability as colors.[12][13]
  • Shirō Kikuchihara - Enhanced hearing ((きょう)()(ちょう)(かく), Kyōka Chōkaku ?), which not only increases his hearing by 5 or 6 times[14][15], it increases the precision by a lot.[14][16]
  • Hayato Uno - Precise Bodily Control ((せい)(みつ) (しん)(たい) (ぞう)(), Seimitsu Shintai Zousa ?), lets Uno move while sniping[17]; however, he couldn't replicate Satori's Twin Snipe.[17]
  • Mai Kitagawa - Cat Who Gets Doted On[17] ((ねこ)かわいがられ, Neko Kawai garare ?), This makes it so people tend to pamper her, and give her treats, which led to her getting round.[17] The side effect has a reduced effect on those who don't like small animals.[17]
  • Yūichi Jin - Foresight (()(らい)(), Mirai-Shi Lit. Future Sight ?), which lets him see the future of those before him[18][19] by having a window open in his mind that he can't turn off[11], but can choose to ignore[11], this also lets him track future branching events.[11]
  • Yūma Kuga and Yūgo Kuga - Seeing Through Lies ((うそ)()(), Uso wo Minuku ?), which lets him see the lies of others[20][21] through a visual cue.[22]
  • Chika Amatori: Sensing enemies and Erasing Presence ((てき) (かん)()()(はい)(), Teki Kanchi/Kehai wo Kesu ?), Chika is the only known person who has 2 side effects, the latter lets her erase her presence, at the cost of needing to focus heavily[7][23], while the former lets her detect neighbors and trion soldiers[7][24], but not much is known about both side effects.
  • Masato Kageura - Emotion Perception ((かん)(じょう)(じゅ)(しん) (たい)(しつ), Kanjōjushin Taishitsu Lit. Emotion Reception Constitution ?), which lets him receive emotions aimed at him from other people.[25][26]
  • Sayoko Shiki - Name Unknown, but is able to use her vision outside of her body to see things where her field of view may be obscured.[27] She compares it to "Astral Projection"; restrictions include an inability to pass through walls, fly in the air, interact with objects and moving slowly. Yuma theorises she does this by extending a thin strand of Trion, where the tip is able to detect light and acts as an optic nerve.[28]
  • Kō Murakami - Enhanced Sleep Learning ((きょう)()(すい)(みん)()(おく), Kyōka Suimin Kioku Lit. Enhanced Sleep Memory ?), which enhances stabilization and consolidation of memory during sleep.[29][30]

Civilian

[edit | edit source]
  • Yōtarō Rindō - Talking to animals ((どう)(ぶつ)との()()()(つう), Dōbutsu to no Ishisotsū Lit. Communicating with Animals ?) which lets him talk to animals[31][32], however how intelligence of the animal will determine the response[33], additionally if he issues a command, the animal doesn't have to obey.[32][31]
  • Yomi - Perfect Parallel Processing ((かん)(ぜん)(へい)(れつ)(どう)()()(こう), Kanzen Heiretsu Dōji Shikō ?), improves his parallel processing ability to the point where Kinuta thought there was two Operators instead of one[34], additionally he was described as having "twice the processing power of the average Reghi".[35]

Theme

[edit | edit source]

A recurring theme in the series sees Side Effects contributing to their possessor's misery:

  • Chika's Side Effects allowed her to escape capture at the hands of Trion Soldiers for years[36][37], and are thus indirectly responsible for her feelings of guilt after her friend was abducted.[36][37]
  • Following his father's death, Yūma's Side Effect allowed him to see through the empty platitudes and attempts at manipulation of the people who surrounded him[38], some of whom would have preferred his father to survive rather than him.[38]
  • Jin's ability to see the future comes with great responsibility, as he may be forced with the choice of letting someone be injured or even die to prevent a worse outcome.[39]
  • Kikuchihara was mocked for the supposed in-utility of his Side Effect[40], with it causing him to overhear himself being mocked.[40]
  • Murakami lost friends due to his Side Effect allowing him to surpass them in their favorite activities in a short time, causing the group to disintegrate.[41]
  • Kageura is not only privy to others' negative feelings towards him[26], but the prickling sensation provoked by his Side Effect is all the more unpleasant if the emotion directed at him is a negative one.[26]
  • Shiki's discomfort around men is due to the severe reaction of her teacher, one caused by her unknowingly revealing she saw his mistress, in front of other faculty.[42]

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • It is possible for two people to have the same Side Effect[43], however due to the rarity of them, it doesn't really happen.[43]

  4. Q: Does a Side Effect ever manifest itself late in life?
A:Except for the very rare case of "inheriting it together with a Black Trigger" like with Yūma, there is no record of a clear late manifestation of a Side Effect at that point.
It is often the case that a person has lived their life without realizing that they have a Side Effect, and later learn about it.

  5. 5.0 5.1 Q: Does Jin use his Side Effect in solo matches? If he does, then what is the cause when he loses?
A: It seems he uses it against A-rank agents. He used it actively in his past matches with Tachikawa too. A common case of him losing has him getting absorbed in reading the future and neglecting the present as the main factor.

  6. Q: Kikuchihara is an arts-type and seems pretty weak, so why did he become an Attacker?
A: Because being close to the target to a certain extent makes better use of the Enhanced Hearing Side Effect.

A: There's that, yes, but it's also to cover up more skin, which keeps his side effect from taking too much of a toll on him.

  9. Q: Does Kikuchihara growing out his hair have anything to do with his Side Effect?
A: It does. He grows out his hair because he gets the impression that he isn't picking up unnecessary sounds this way.

  10. Q: Does Murakami learn every time he goes to sleep? I'm worried it will tire him.
A: It seems that when he sleeps he usually spends some of it without his Side Effect activating, so I think he'll be fine.

A: It's as if a new window pops open within his field of view (in his mind). There's no off switch, but he can make a conscious effort to ignore it.

  22. Q: Can Yuma's side effect help him detect lies in writing too? Like in books or text messages? Will Yuma's side effect pick up on lies that the speaker doesn't even realize are lies? How does Yuma's side effect tell him when something is a lie? (Does he hear the person speaking in slow motion, or does he get prickling tingles like Kage?)
A: When a person is lying, Yuma's side effect makes it look like black smoke is pouring out of their mouth. The subtle changes in the liar's voice transform into a visual cue that helps Yuma see through the lie. So no, I don't think his side effect would work if the person didn't know they were lying or if he were reading the lie in a text.

  33. Q: How does Yōtarō talk to animals?
A: It depends on the animal's level of intelligence. He can get "Yes", "No", "Okay", "No way" from any animal. Basically it's Yōtarō speaking to them and then getting a response.
