S-Rank is a special tier of Border's combat personnel. S-Rank is exclusively made up of agents who use Black Triggers.
Role
[edit | edit source]S-Rank agents aren't able to form a squad[1] or participate in Rank Wars[1][2] Additionally they do Defense Duty[3][4], and fight by themselves in case of an Invasion.[5]
Promotion, and Demotion
[edit | edit source]Promotion
[edit | edit source]To be promoted to S-Rank, naturally one has to be compatible with a Black Trigger that Border has.[6] Anyone who is compatible with a Black Trigger is listed as a candidate for that trigger.[6] In the past there was a competition for Fūjin, in which Jin won[6], However after Jin gave up Fūjin, a debate was had instead.[7]
Regardless of the method, the candidate can either accept or reject becoming S-Rank, in addition the Top Brass can reject candidacy for an agent. For example, Amō was immediately promoted to S-Rank after becoming B-Rank[4], while Kazama, who was the top candidate for Fūjin, declined.[7] The top brass decided that Arashiyama, and Kitora aren't in the running due to working in PR.[7]
Demotion
[edit | edit source]An S-Rank agent can be demoted if they give up their Black Trigger.[8] In the case of Jin he got demoted back to his original rank of A-Rank.[9]
Privileges
[edit | edit source]It is unknown how S-Rank agents are paid, and if they have a Strategy Room is unknown, but it can be assumed they get some sort of payment, and a strategy room.
Relationship with Black Triggers
[edit | edit source]The Trigger
[edit | edit source]Currently, Border seemingly can't modify Black Triggers, so the user has to work with what comes with the Trigger itself. This means S-Rank agents can't use Bail Out due to Black Triggers not being equipped with it.[10][2] In terms of specific Black Triggers, how Fūjin doesn't have shield[11], but has a receiver for communication abilities[11], while Yūma's Black Trigger does not have any communication abilities[11] (this role was filled by Replica[11]).
In Combat
[edit | edit source]When Jin was S-Rank, he would fight with Fūjin both for defense duty[3], and in combat[12], while Amō would fight with a normal trigger when on defense duty[4], but fought with his black trigger during the invasion.[13]
Candidates
[edit | edit source]Any Border agent can use a Black Trigger without being S-Rank, However in both cases, it was during an emergency.
For Miwa, he was given Fūjin[14] before the Second Large-Scale Invasion started by Kido[15], After the invasion, it was decided that Fūjin will stay at HQ, and anyone compatible will be able to use it when necessary.[16]
For Yūma, due to how he can't take off his Black Trigger without eventually dying[17], he is allowed to keep his Black Trigger on him at all times, but was only allowed to use it using emergencies[18], and has to follow orders.[18]
Agents
[edit | edit source]The only S-Rank agent currently is Tsukihiko Amō[19], while Jin is formerly S-Rank, currently A-Rank.[9]
Candidates
[edit | edit source]In the past there were more than 20 agents who were compatible with Fūjin[6], currently there are 12 Border agents who are compatible.[20][7]

Q: Miwa used Fūjin in the Large-Scale Invasion Arc, but since when did he have possession of it?
A: After talking to Jin on the roof, he was summoned by Commander Kido and reluctantly received Fūjin. It seems he had no intention of using it.

Q: Will Yūma die if he take off the Black Trigger Ring?
A: He won't die immediately. He can move for a while even if he takes off the Ring; like running out of battery he will eventually run out of Trion, stop moving and fall into sleep mode. If he is supplied with Trion he will start moving again. But without the ring he can't send nutrients to his flesh body, so he might die if he is left like that.
