I just remembered "love, simon" in october 2021 and like... HOW is one guy coming out as GAY, not trans, not nonbinary, not pan, but cigender white male gay such a big fucking deal? Like HOW. And HOW is there only one other openly gay person in the whole school???
There's probably a group of actual queer kids on that school. It includes all sexualities and genders that just dgaf about everybody. They just rolled their eyes about this whole incident and went on with their lives, noticed by nobody cuz nobody really cares and Simon is, let's be honest, a straight guy who happened to like guys. Like, his personality is straight. You get me.
I know this take has been done million times before but I wanted to word this myself. Love, Simon is a cool movie, but it's not for the gays, Simon is gay done for the straights
Edit: just to make clear, as i thought it is but whatever, I'm not equating being cis gay guy with not being queer (wtf thatd be so shitty), what I meant by "actual queer kids" is "queer people who aren't cardboard cutouts of a straight person made gay for the one specific medium so the straights can still be comfortable with them while the queer audiences struggle to relate". I get how it might be an important movie to some people, especially the baby gays, and I'm hspoy for them, but I'm just so tired of popular queer media catering more to the straights than the gays almost ALWAYS
This is some stupid shit.
Apparently it’s not enough for gay men to just like men for us to be respected, we have to be something else too. Amazing.
Also I am tired of this fake take of Simon being just a straight boy who likes boys. It’s so fucking stupid and doesn’t even work in context of the movie. Nothing Simon went through is something straight boys go through. The kid spent the majority of the film in a slow moving depression because he was alone, to the point where an anonymous email gave him hope.
Did yall not even listen to his mother’s character, “you can breathe now” monologue. Yall have no empathy for gay men, you can’t even recognize universal feelings.
“How is there only one openly gay kid in the school” are you dumb? There are literally so many gay kids with this experience. Like cmon. There are other experiences than your own.
I graduated high school in 2014 in Alabama about an hour from Atlanta GA where Love Simon takes place and there was one lesbian couple and 3 out gay boys including myself. I swear to God y'all think homophobia ended when Glee premiered but I had people calling me faggot to my face in 2013.
Any gay man my age can tell you point blank that the "You can breathe now." speech made them bawl their eyes out and Simon was one of the most relatable, raw, and real gay characters in a long time. Calling him a "cardboard cutout" shows just how much you refuse to empathize with gay men imo.
I'm baffled that someone genuinely can say that "queer audiences struggled to relate" to the movie when for so many people it was one of their first gay movies ever, the piece of fiction that helped them come out to their families, etc. Like, I remember when Love, Simon came out and every gay person I knew wanted to watch it. I remember my best friend, who is a gay man, going to see it with his boyfriend and recommending it to me with an emotional voice.
Like... Maybe OP needs to take a breath outside of their online presence and realise that, in the real world, gay people are still very much targeted for their sexuality. Also, you can not say "I'm not equating being cis gay guy with not being queer" while also saying, in the same breath, that being gay would somehow be fine while other, Cooler, More Oppressed™ identities wouldn't be; and saying homophobic shit like "a straight personality". There is no personality trace that comes with being gay, kid. Gay people are just as diverse as straight people.
Also, beyond the insane show of privilege that is the take of "obviously there's an lgbt+ club in the school already, isn't this a thing everywhere?", I need to ask why there even would be such a club in a world where homophobia does not exist and "no one cares" that a kid comes out because "it's not a big deal". You do know the reason these kind of clubs exist is to help kids deal with rampant homophobia and transphobia in their school environments, right? Your own logic makes no sense.
