Day 11

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Huh...

My writing process varies depending on the project. Sometimes (like last year's nanowrimo) I go in with a story that's pretty well outlined. Frequently I'll talk through parts or all of it with someone, and I do whatever research I figure I'm going to need. And then I just sit down and write, from beginning to end. I know that some people can skip around an outline, writing a chapter here and a chapter there, but I am not one of them.

For other stories, especially short ones, they're based either on the prompt calls I periodically do here (hell, if you've read this far, feel free to leave me one in the comments - pairing [MCU, Stucky, Stony, WinterHawk, WinterIron, Tony/Rhodey, Sam/Steve, or Sam/Steve/Bucky] and then a kink, a first sentence, three words, whatever) or some other type of prompts (I have an MCU bingo card for instance).

Occasionally I'll get a picture in my head, or more rarely, see something online, that makes me go "huh - I wonder what would happen with Character X in that situation."

Once I started writing, back in my Buffy days, it was pretty smooth. In Stargate Atlantis, I couldn't seem to stop writing. Then things at work got sticky, my mental health got worse, and I just kind of... stopped for a while. I got a great idea for what was originally supposed to be Steve/Tony, and then original fic, and I literally fiddled with that for about two years. Finally I realized that while I still may eventually tell that story, I was using it as an excuse not to tell any others, and I made the decision to take it out of my Scrivener files.

That's about there is to my process, I think. I don't really think about it often, but if you have questions, hit me with them.

And I'm serious - prompts are good.

I completely understand being wildly prolific and then . . . stuck.

I like the "I wonder. . . " aspect of your process.

I'm not either. Reading through all of the responses, most people who write short fic can wing it, it seems. Most people who write longer pieces need some sort of outline or plan. That's how it works for me, too. There are a few people who can write long without any planning; I know a woman who is now a professional mystery writer who claimed she never wrote her casefic with a ending in mind, that knowing the solution ahead of time would be too boring.

I don't either, and yet, she did, and did it amazingly well for years and years. I don't know that her process has changed since she turned pro, but it wouldn't surprise me if it hadn't. She's a scientist by training, too.

Thank God, another one who writes chronologically. I thought I was the only one! I feel you, writing is a lot harder these days than it was when I had a ton of mental time on my hands (namely, middle school) and I am much more self-conscious about my writing as well, so that tends to throw spanners into the works to muck it up even more. I envy those people (coughdirasudis) cough who can write a crapton of things *and* have them be long. Like, how. Show me your ways!

Prompts, eh? Winterhawk or Winteriron (or Winterhawkiron??) with the phrase, "Huh. I thought you'd be scarier." Cheers!
