Livejournal just destroyed my friends feed. Their stupid change to multiple files and whatever HTML 5 tricks has made it no longer load in a reasonable time, and it looks like I am locked in and can't go back to the old style which actually worked.
That is stupid web designer trick #1: developing on a LAN and not testing on a limited -or even remote - connection. A site experience is completely different on a gigabit ethernet with a 1 ms ping than over a 1MBaud DSL with a 100ms ping. It is shoddy workmanship to roll out before testing a mediocre link user experience.
The next worst Stupid web design is locking the font size. People choose their default font size because it is what they want. ALL font sizes in a document for the web should be relative, not absolute. Deal with it.
Everyone should have principles, a guiding morality and a vision of how life should be. Most people will have a long list of principles, which are ordinal and fluid; no one values kindness 3 and safety 4; a person values kindness and safety and sometimes the one wins out and sometimes the other, with no contradiction. Principles are personal; die gedanken sind frei, as the Germans said in the 30s. Government can either align with principles of the majority, or, more commonly, on each point align with a minority, contradict a minority, and be indifferent to the majority.
The guiding principle of the Libertarian Party is Voluntarism; the idea that force should not be used to achieve political goals; this is literally an affirmation that every member of the national party has made. Everything else flows from that: their stance on public works, public health, war... it's all from voluntarism. So, when a person says they are a libertarian, it is a fair bet they are for no foreign wars, no welfare state, no taxes, and no alphabet agency (pick one, they are against it if you ask).
I have come to realize that St. Louis is the "Can't Do" city. Any professional you ask to do a thing, if there could possibly be a more expert person to do the job, they will refer you. Then that referral will look for any reason to not actually take the case. It doesn't matter what field; they can't do it.
This explains much of the cities problems. What other city has more dentists and vets than dry cleaners? More doctors than plumbers or carpenters? Cities are built and maintained by the mid-level skilled labor, not by professionals. Quality of life is based on building and maintaining the infrastructure of life — homes, business locations, and recreation facilities. This is why qualify of life is often better in small towns where there are few professionals. Yes, it's NICE to have a professional in every category around, but they really don't add anything to the community 99% of the time. Most people don't need a dentist or doctor but once a year; a lawyer less often than that.
I think the problem is St. Louis thinks of itself as a small city with "big city" ability. So they think Since Chicago has a top tier expert Orthopedic surgeon, St. Louis needs that, too, to be a "proper city" and so they refer even minimal orthopedic jobs to the expert to keep them from packing up and leaving.
What with facebook being all crazy and against any conservatism (or really, anything that isn't full-on woke), figured I could come back here. Every time facebook gives me s "suspension" I'll have to re-awaken the link, but hey, who cares facebook can dry up and die. https://dbhq.github.io/results/?aj…
Steemit is a site unlike any other - by leveraging the blockchain technology of chared trust built by Bitcoin, it prevents anyone from censoring or controlling the discourse. By using upvotes for funding and trending, it prevents advertising or despicable content from taking over. We'll see how it goes.
In any can, I'd suggest making an account and seeing what's going on there.
Laura's Trust bought a townhouse in South county St. Louis. We are moving in this weekend.
This is back to being a suburbanite for the first time in 8 years. I have mixed feelings: glad we found a home Laura is happy with; somewhat scared to be back in a city with all the stress that entails. Glad that Laura will be able to get by without me if needed, since there is bus service and Uber and so on. Glad that we can get better food, and better cultural events, and there are lots of things for Kenneth to do that can help him learn and grow.
Very glad that we are near Laura's parents. It will help immensely if I am out of town. But also, It will let Kenneth be very close to his grandparents, who I respect highly.
On this date, Kenneth Steven Schattke was born, after 26 hours of labor. He was 7 lb 8 oz and 20.5" long. His head measured 12.5" Laura and the baby are fine.
On June 21st, 2015, I married a beautiful woman I met here at college, Laura Michelle Warren. She is now Laura Warren Schattke, and we are still living in Rolla, MO as I finish my Thesis.
I am using my ProScan 9500 tablet to update while soaking in my bath. For $40 its cheap enough to not care. Since it came with a full keyboard in the carrying folio, its even nice to use. For the last few years, I have been updating Facebook, instead of here. Especially since that is where my Fiance, Laura Warren, does her social networking. We have an event for our wedding in June there. I looked at the requirements for a PhD, and it would require another 3 semesters here, so I won't be doing that. I am going to just finish the Master's in Nuclear Engineering and get a job. I expect to work 1-2 years, pay off my student loans and build a prototype of the continuous plasma accelerator. That is the key component of my design and the one needing the most engineering.
