One of my choirs had their concert Monday night--HUZZAH--the other is having its concert this Saturday night--HUZZAH--and all this means that for a few months I will blessedly only be singing in one group. (I told my work minion the other day "Don't let me do all three choirs again in the fall, please. Remind me how crazed I was right now." We'll see if I hold myself to that.)

The concert Monday night was funny in a way--we were doing songs of the American composers, and the third to last song was a spiritual arranged by Moses Hogan. I always feel weird singing spirituals, especially when I'm in choirs that are almost entirely white, but apparently we did a good enough job that somebody in the audience was moved to holler during the song, which led the entire choir and the director to blink a lot and look around at each other in confusion because, dude, the audience doesn't interact with us while we're still singing! I kept laughing after the song was over during the wild applause, pure physical reaction to the unexpected emotion. It did make the last two songs of the concert much more fun for all of us, I have to say.

And last night I drove to a town an hour away to watch the dance troupe Pilobolus, and they strongly felt to me like they were coming out of a modern dance tradition (okay, a lot of their movements probably belonged to other traditions, but I recognized some of those moves from my own dance classes), and the group philosophy is about groups interacting and working together as individuals, and I could definitely see that. They were very definitely individuals, and it was a different feel from other dance troupes I've seen that worked much more--harmoniously? Cohesively? It was interesting, but I was usually not as emotionally moved as I am by movement--a bit like that a capella group I saw there last year, that sounded technically gorgeous but had no soul for me.
travel curse

It's not fun anymore when it starts STRESSING YOU OUT.

Holy gods, I have reached the point when fun things are causing me extra stress and that is just SILLY.

This weekend: fly to New Orleans, travel through swamp and plantation, possible Easter egg or keg or something hunt?, GO TO A MUSEUM for once while still in the French Quarter
Next weekend: birthday dinner Friday night I'm organizing for myself at a local restaurant (OMG large party! OMG making a reservation! OMG asking friends to spend money to buy their own dinners when we all are broke!); mini road-trip with the boy around the area Saturday/Sunday
Following weekend: maybe clean house? For the first time in longer than I care to think?
Last weekend of April: one choir concert Saturday night in one town, sing at church services at o'gods o'clock for different choir Sunday morning in another town
First weekend of May: fly back east to visit friends
(dad visiting in here somewhere?)
Last weekend of May: friend's wedding, possible mini-road trip somewhere since it's a long weekend?
(dad visiting in here somewhere?)
Late June: fly to upper northwest for another friend's wedding, if the timing and moneys and vacation work out?
Last weekend of June/first week of July: fly to BUDAPEST AND PRAGUE, boo-fucking-yah
First week of August: SAA conference in California; try to visit cousins that weekend before flying back

I do this to myself every year lately. Note to self: SPACE THE TRAVEL OUT BETTER. Also, allow yourself weekends at home every once in a while, fool.

Wait, it's my 30th birthday year. I promised myself EPIC TRAVEL, didn't I? But, just, between work and the boy and choirs and family and other RL stuff, I've had no time to play in any fandom, write much fic, and I don't have the time to miss it but I miss it anyway.

Yesterday we saw a production of Importance of Being Earnest, and I always go to productions of this play because no matter how terrible the actors may be, the play is still funny because of the writing. And this was going to be one of those mundane, mediocre productions until right there in the second act when Algy threw a muffin at Ernest's back, snatched it from the floor where it fell, and tossed it in his mouth. The actor playing Ernest proceeded to break, and then so did the actor playing Algy when he tried to say his line with a mouth full of muffin. There is nothing, I tell you, nothing more gleeful than when even the actors can't keep a straight face. The audience went into hysterics; the other bit as hysterically funny was when the ancient butler made continuous creaking noises serving tea while Cecily and Gwendolyn looked on in horror.

(This was a much more physical/melodramatic reading of the play than I usually see, which actually did make it quite fun--their movements were often highly stylized and exaggerated in lovely, silly ways.)

So, yes, LIFE. Christ, such a first-world problem, I should quit my whining.

fannish year in review

Oh wow, I totally wrote more this past year than I thought I had!

So, about as much DW as you would expect, about as many crossovers and multi-era DW fics as you would expect, a few new fandoms (yaaaaay! I'm really glad of that, actually; it's exciting to write for different characters and different worlds), and continuing to support the gay and bisexual agenda, woo. I didn't do as much audio fic as I would have liked, and I have a feeling I won't be writing as much in 2012, but...we'll see how inspired I am as the year goes?

...Apparently this weekend I am dressing in film noir drag for a friend's birthday party.

I need to acquire suspenders. And candy cigarettes. And a more appropriate tie than my purple silk one. (No, I can't use the blue silk cravat either.)

Man, if I were dressing in Victorian drag, this woulda been SO MUCH EASIER.

Tonight I saw the Yamato drummers of Japan and they were kickass. The choreography, the theatricality of the show, the backdrops and use of screens and lighting--seriously, the lighting, all these rich reds and oranges of sunrise or sunset and cold blues of twilight and night, and the transitions between were really well orchestrated--and, of course, the drumming itself was brilliant. Talk about fine muscle control, and I think the rhythms are still thrumming through me (I can't imagine how the drummers feel still, an hour or two after the show is over). One guy had John Shepard hair, which was surprising and a little distracting, and he happened to be the main goofball who happened to have a partner in crime that was not at all like Rodney McKay. Actually, John Shepard!hair helped me realize what some of the movements with the drum sticks were strongly reminding me of, why they felt so familiar--Teyla's stick fighting moves. (And speaking of hair, I totally developed an instant girl!crush on one of the drummers, all because of her fabulous, fabulous hair.)

Hey, look! lunate8 has podficced "Life in the 21st Century" - check it out!. I've never had anybody want to podfic the same story twice before, this is really cool. Actually, the response generally to this fic has been wicked and cool. Oh, Hardison, how you so awesome?

Okay, I'm getting up stupidly early for a weekend in order to go to a pub crawl for cancer with a bunch of people I don't know. This could either go fantastically or be one of the bigger mistakes of my life. Whoopee?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, katie_m! I hope it has at some point involved Teal'c, PI battling zombies in a post-apocalyptic world. (Is that an appropriate thing to wish on a birthday? Why not!)

Completely unrelatedly, let's have a meme!

How this meme works:
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed. Feel free to ask me questions back, if you like. Also, if you'd rather just answer questions in the comments and not repost, that's fine by me.

And so fahrbotdrusilla asked me:

1.) Which is your favorite EDA?

I was going to say Halflife, and then I thought about Fear Itself...but wait, Fear Itself is technically a PDA, right? Halflife it is!

2.) What's your favorite thing written by Oscar Wilde (I would say barring The Importance Of Being Earnest)?

Oh sure, bar that! Second favorite is probably "The Canterville Ghost," not least because I used that storyline for my magic prop in theatre tech class.

3.) What is your favorite food?

Chicken parmigiana from Johnny Carino's. YUM. I need to do that for my birthday again this year.

4.) What would you like to see Parker and Hardison go undercover together as next season on leverage?

They totally need to go to a sci-fi con together, don't they? I think I can trust the Leverage writers to handle that without being overly cruel to sci-fi cons and fandom. Hardison spends the entire ep trying not to out himself as a BNF, either to his fellow fans at the con or to his teammates; Parker...oh, gods, Parker.

5.) What would happen if Fitz showed up in the new series?

Other than a tiny niche of fandom screaming in hysterics? He would save the world by playing guitar. Eleven would accidentally snog him, Rory would be annoyed when Fitz gave him clothing pointers, and Amy would probably alternately want to snog him and also be annoyed by him knowing the Doctor before she did. And there might be some angst, but it wouldn't last long because Eleven is a tiny bit magical like that.

I gave money to the World Wildlife Fund, and they sent me a little baby penguin stuffed animal in return. And I'd forgotten that I got that, but I had had the fullest intention to give it to somebody--probably not my nephew, who's too old for stuffed animals now, but maybe my mother since she's always giving *me* stuff animals, or a friend I'm going to see this weekend in NOLA who's pregnant OMG--but then I took the penguin out of the packaging, looked at it, rubbed noses with it (I couldn't resist), and now I kinda can't part with it. I mean, dude, I just sat cuddling it while watching random tv.

...dammit.

Also, I watched Sanctuary's last season finale, and it had Fitz Mason FIIIIITZ Callum Blue in it, and it went Bollywood. No, seriously, it did, and WTF?????? But it reminded me I totally need to look up a guy I knew in college and see if I can find him in anything I can get over here in the States.

In sum...nope, I've got nothin'.
