Bake Sale for Tiptree on Fri! Need volunteers+bakers!

Greetings!

We have a big change at WisCon this year: The Bake Sale will be on FRIDAY from 1-5pm in room 627. (Same place, new day & time!) We're looking for bakers, volunteers, and of course for hungry con-goers to drop by during the Gathering. ;)

For folks who may not know, every year WisCon hosts a bake sale to benefit the James Tiptree Jr. award (https://tiptree.org/). Members of the WisCon community donate homemade treats that volunteers help us sell to raise money for the award.

We need bakers to make some tasty treats for the sale! If you're interested in bringing a treat, please review our updated guidelines at http://wiscon.net/events/bake-sale… . We've got updated hours for treat dropoff and a big emphasis on food safety this year, so please check those out before you bake. Thanks!

Traveling from out of town or not sure you've got time to bake this year? In addition to bakers, we're looking for volunteers to staff the Bake Sale for 1-hour shifts from 12:30pm to 5:30pm on FRIDAY (during & after the Gathering). Any time volunteering entitles you to our volunteer gift -- ask about it at the Registration Desk. Six hours or more of volunteering entitles you to a 40% rebate on your WisCon membership; to claim this, ask for a volunteer rebate form at the Registration Desk.

You can see the current schedule (and which slots need volunteers) at
https://docs.google.com/spreadshee…

If you're interested in volunteering, please complete our Bake Sale
Volunteer Form (https://goo.gl/forms/lxvByVJWQ7CVs…), and the Bake Sale
team will follow up with you.

Thank you again for your support of the Bake Sale and the Tiptree Award! If you have any questions about baking or volunteering, contact us at bakesale@wiscon.net.

Governor's Club Room Available!

I have one Governor's Club room available for Thursday night through Monday that I need to transfer to someone. It has two queen beds. The Governor's Club rooms come with free unlimited cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and desserts in the rooftop lounge (which in the past has more than made up for the price differential).

Please let me know ASAP if you'd like it! Thanks!

Concourse hotel room available for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights

I won't be able to attend Wiscon this year, and I missed the deadline to cancel the hotel room despite the efforts of Wiscon to remind me. You have to call the hotel to cancel rather than being able to cancel online, and I hate the telephone.

Anyway, if anybody wants a regular, not Governor's Club, room with a king-sized bed, comment here or email me at pddb@demesne.com and we can arrange for the transfer.

Need to transfer Concourse hotel room! Also one membership for sale

Whoops, we missed the 7-day cancellation for our Concourse hotel room, so we would REALLY love to transfer the reservation to someone else! Get the good con rate. Regular room, not Governor's Club (king bed, but that might be changeable). Send us email: kschaffer@hidden-knowledge.com or mjward@hidden-knowledge.com.

We also have one Wiscon membership for sale. We'll sell it for $40. Same emails as above.

Hoping to hear from someone!!

Big Writers' Workshop Changes for WisCon 40!

Hi, y'all - I just wanted to pop back into Livejournal because the WisCon Writers' Workshop has always meant so much to me and so has LJ and now I'm running the Workshop (can LJ be far behind).

Basically, there are big changes this year! There are some new group leaders (watch the blog!), and it's going to be very fantastic to work with them. And there are also some special sections because it was time to try something new. There are blog entries going up about all of these but I wanted to give LJ (and Dreamwidth) folks a crack at things before the general blog-readers just because I'm so excited.

This year there will be: comic writing (it's a how-to)! video game writing (it's another how-to)! post-colonialist steampunk (special emphasis on non-white, non-Western narratives)! paranormal/sci fi/fantasy romance/erotica (focused on balancing sex with plot and great sex scenes)!

And, just in case that weren't enough, there are three sections devoted to fan fic! One is a general beta-reading section and the other two are special topics that will work a little more like discussions with some exercises thrown in.

If you want to get involved, now is most definitely the time.

Contact me with submissions and signups: workshop@wiscon.net
WisCon 40 deadline for said submissions and signups: April 25, 2016 (Extended!)

I would really really really love to see you there

ETA: Adding links!

The blog announcement of this year's special topics for additional critique-based sessions

Looking for a Wiscon roommate

Hi. I'm looking for a roommate for Wiscon.
I have a room at the concourse, on the 10th floor to share. My roommate of the past several years is not going this year.

In the room, I tend to be quiet...

Looking for a roomate who is non-smoker and does not use scents (Asthma triggers.)

If that describes you and you are looking for a spot to sleep in the Concourse, let me know!

Text for post supplied by Amanda Bankier

When I started to recover from the burn-out in the late 1970s that ended my publication of WatCh, no longer having access to the resources that allowed me to produce it physically, and not having or being likely to have a website, I put it out of my mind. However, as I tried to figure out if I could make it to WisCon 40, the wistful thought occurred: “It's a pity I can't do an anniversary issue.” And then “Why not?” By myself I could provide enough material for a short one, and if you ask Open Office to export a file as a PDF, it giggles and says “Sure thing; how much do you want me to compress it?” This would serve both my anachronistic attachment to print, and provide a method of distribution not dissimilar to the old days – the PDF could be sent on request as an e-mail attachment and printed or viewed as the recipient preferred.

However, the strength of the 'zine was the meeting of minds on the subject of women and SF and so, short as the available time is, I hope some of you may wish to submit short articles, art, reminiscences, comments, or whatevers for consideration.

Please send material or inquiries by April 30 to: afbankier@gmail.com and please start the Subject line with “W7” to ensure your message ends up where it should. Thank you.

WISCON VID PARTY

So that happened. I shamelessly (and poorly) filked the genius of Lin-Manuel Miranda… To further highlight his superior word mastery by botching his creation? No! To get your attention?! Well, yes. But also! Also, I know that you know, aliens, robots, mermaids, superheroes, dystopian monarchs, and revolutionaries all have a golden ticket to WisCon Vid Party. But, also invited are the feuding fathers of Broadway hip hop, the devoted fans of Cindi Mayweather, the codebreakers of Bletchley, the swooning eye-sex from film adaptations of classic 1950s lesbian pulp novels, and the yet-to-be-videographed stories from sf/f books. Let me further assure you still: this is not a comprehensive list.

We welcome all fanvids in all genres and from all traditions of fannish video production, so long as they have some connection to WisCon's focus on feminism and science fiction. WisCon defines feminism broadly, and we're interested in vids that engage with any aspect of gender, sexuality, race, disability, and/or class. We don’t want definitions to limit you; if you’re interested in WisCon’s themes and consider your vid to engage with these ideas, we’d love to have it at WisCon. We consider vid theme to be as relevant as source genre.

Each year we have some incredible premieres by experienced and newbie vidders. We would love to see your work at this year’s Vid Party!

And if your vid includes gorgeous shots of space, please send it our way. We are absolute trash for vids set in space. Some might even call us orbital debris.

PREMIERES ARE DUE MONDAY, MAY 16TH

Read more about submitting your premiere here. Please follow , /, or / if you want to see more info, reminders, etc.
