I apparently need to post so LJ doesn't kill my account.

So, um, HI.  I am sad to see that my DEFAULT icon is from the 2004 election.  I am lame.

I. Love. Jon Stewart.

I mean, y'all knew that long ago, and that love was merely compounded last Friday when he chewed up Tucker Carlson and spit him out. But last night? When he riffed off of his appearance on The Daily Show? Man, I love him.

"I called someone a dick on national TV."

Random aside: "They're all dicks. I didn't want to hurt the feelings of the other three."

Re: Novack: "He didn't break his hip; his hip was trying to escape him." ::snerk::

Totally unapologetic. Totally rocks my world.

ETA: Thanks to kelbelle for passing along this link to a quicktime file. Heehee.

In other news, CONGRATS to jo_march for yet ANOTHER GCCA win ::g:: and to dianora for some well-deserved awards as well! Y'all rock.

WTF is up with Vladmir Putin?? Isn't it a little INAPPROPRIATE for a foreign leader to purport to urge AMERICAN voters to vote for one candidate over another?

MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin says terrorist attacks in Iraq are aimed at preventing the re-election of U.S. President George W. Bush and that a Bush defeat "could lead to the spread of terrorism to other parts of the world."

Putin, speaking Central Asian Cooperation Organization summit in Tajikistan Monday, made his most overt comments of support so far for the re-election of Bush for a second term.

"Any unbiased observer understands that attacks of international terrorist organizations in Iraq, especially nowadays, are targeted not only and not so much against the international coalition as against President Bush," Putin said.

"International terrorists have set as their goal inflicting the maximum damage to Bush, to prevent his election to a second term.

"If they succeed in doing that, they will celebrate a victory over America and over the entire anti-terror coalition," Putin said.

Fuck. You.

In other news, GO, SOX!! ;)

Well, look at that. I'm shocked that a confusing ballot has already surfaced. And in a swing state! SHOCKED.

If y'all haven't already seen it, check out the Michigan absentee ballot. Look particularly closely at the arrows for the Presidential tickets. If you choose the one pointing directly at "Kerry/Edwards," it's the top arrow, which is apparently the "Bush/Cheney" arrow, as they've all been offset down a notch. But only the presidential race arrows have been effected.

This was passed along to me by a fellow law student. She suggested we register our disbelief and anger with the company that printed the ballot: Miller Consultations & Elections, Inc., 231-869-4349.

From Brad Wittman in the Michigan Secretary of State's office:

The ballot printing error is confined to a single precinct in the City of Alma. Approximately 69 ballots containing the error were released to voters on Monday, September 27. On Tuesday, September 28, a voter called the clerk to alert her to the error. Arrangements have been made to send the 69 voters replacement ballots. The clerk expects to receive corrected ballots on Monday, October 4.

In the meantime, a voter who received one of the misprinted ballots posted a scan of the ballot on the web. This has created far more interest (an outrage) than what is warranted.

Yes, God forbid we be outraged at BLATANT BALLOT ERRORS. Fucker.

"quagmire" isn't a strong enough word

Well-researched, frightening, and long Harper's article under the cut, discussing Iraq, neocons, Bremer's crazyass laws, and what's gonna happen if the fakeass temporary Iraqi government tries to privatize everything in line with the neocons' plans:

I asked Mahmud what would happen if the plant was sold despite the workers' objections. "There are two choices," he said, looking me in the eye and smiling kindly. "Either we will set the factory on fire and let the flames devour it to the ground, or we will blow ourselves up inside of it. But it will not be privatized."

...That's who al Sadr's foot soldiers are: the young men who have been shut out of the neocons' grand plans for Iraq, who see no possibilities for work, and whose neighborhoods have seen none of the promised reconstruction. Bremer has failed these young men, and everywhere that he has failed, Moqtada al Sadr has cannily set out to succeed. In Shia slums from Baghdad to Basra, a network of Sadr Centers coordinate a kind of shadow reconstruction. Funded through donations, the centers dispatch electricians to fix power and phone lines, organize local garbage collection, set up emergency generators, run blood drives, direct traffic where the streetlights don't work. And yes, they organize militias too. Al Sadr took Bremer's economic casualties, dressed them in black, and gave them rusty Kalashnikovs.

Um, why isn't this shit on the front page?

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Three people and eight corporations -- including Sears and Cracker Barrel -- were indicted Tuesday in an alleged scheme to make illegal campaign contributions through a political action committee formed by U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

DeLay, a Texas Republican, was not charged.

The grand jury has been investigating whether $2.5 million in corporate funds were used illegally to help Republican candidates win elections in 2002 that gave the GOP a majority in the Texas House for the first time since Reconstruction. The GOP later used its majority to redraw Texas' congressional districts to favor Republican candidates.

See what I get for all but dropping out of a fandom? The GCCA nominations are out.

Congrats to all the nominees, including my lovely friends, jo_march, megwriting, dianora2, and christinekh, who pointed out the whole thing to me in the first place. :)

What's amusing? I haven't posted *anything* that qualifies, half of Jo's nominated stories are, of course, listed as "Jo&Ryo," and -- by far the most amusing -- in the individual author categories (i.e. "Best Drama Author"), we're nominated in a glomp as "Jo&Ryo." Just like that. No spaces in the name. ::shakes head::

I so very much appreciate all the people who still even remember us in that fandom and would nominate us. I, however, and going to withdraw my name from consideration, since I was improperly nominated in the first place. :)
