My Mac keeps restarting by itself. How do I fix it and back up my stuff?

It just started yesterday, randomly, I'd hear the sound of it turning on at it must have happened like 3 times in the morning. It varies.

Now it's happening a lot more. URGH.

So is there any way to find out wtf is going on, to delete stuff on my computer that is suspect or I no longer use? I need it to be simplified.... I am a complete novice with computer stuff.

Also, I now have an external hard drive. How can I make sure I save everything I want on it - is there a way to make sure you have every image, document, video, etc? Will I need to save programs on there too?

And how do I save bookmarks on my firefox just in case?

Help me save my computer! It's a 10.6.8 and I've had it for a few years... but I believe it's savable.

THANK YOU!

Recording video

Hello, I've been a mac user for over 2-3 years now but I have to admitt that even when I have loved the experience, i haven't found some of the answers I'm looking for regarding some of the things I used to do (or in any case know that could be done on a PC) with my MAC.

My question is the following:

I'm an illustrator so basically I'm looking for a way to record what I'm painting in PS or Painter.
I never did it on PC but as far as I knew, it could be done with windows media right?
In any case I don't know how to do it in a MAC and I really need to know how as my boss is asking me to record the painting process for a tutorial.

Here's what I want to do , here is the link for a youtube video. It's a recording of a painting process.
I'm kind of hoping I can do that with my mac, because otherwise I'm pretty much screwed.
thanks in advance!

photo question

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to make photos/pictures translucent... like a watermark....  I wanted to edit a picture to use for my wallpaper, but it is kind of dark and hard to see all the icons .. I just wanted to make it super light / see through....   I knew there was a way to do it with the windows computer...  But can't figure it out on my mac.
Thanks a bunch..

Newbie Mac User

I know that having a Mac makes it a lot less likely for me to get a virus, but having had my last laptop implode badly enough to send me to the Mac side of the force leaves me a bit nervous about having a computer that is connected to the internet with no virus protection.

Does anyone have any suggestions for antivirus software to use with a Mac? I don't want my shiny baby to get infected. :/

Man, I hope this comm is still alive. I need your guys help like woah. xD

So, XP is annoying, Vista downright scares me, and I need a new computer. As much as I'd geek over having a lynix, Adobe does not get along well with it, and that is not gonna work for me as a animation student. So I'm thinking of getting a Mac. If I land my dream job at Pixar someday, I'll be using one anyway, so why not?

But.... well, I've been using PCs since I was, like, a toddler (I kid you not) and I'm starting college, AND I is poor, so this is basically along the lines of buying a house in paranoia. In other words: I need convinced that this is a good idea. So have at it, comm.

Hit me with whatever you got, but I have a few specific questions:

1. Refurbished Macs. Cheaper versions of the same awesome, or a pain in the butt worth an extra $300 to avoid?

2. How nice is Mac's customer service? How good are they at fixing problems if you're under their warranty or AppleCare

3. How durable are Macs against viruses really?

4. Is AppleCare worth it?

5. My wifi router is connected to/matinenced through a Windows system in the other room. Would this cause any problems?

anybody familiar with nextfitness?

i'm having issues with nextfitness on my mac that i didn't have when i was using a pc.

www.nextfitness.com

Nextfitness mixer won't read my playlist. It says that the playlist I want to use is empty, when it is not. I want to use my free podcasts (which I moved into their own playlists). I did this on the PC I used to have, now I am trying to use a mac. What should I do?

Can anybody help me?

Help!

I recently bought a Mac.
Of course I never ever used a mac before, so pretty much the one I have it's my first, and so far I'm loving the whole experience. Especially since I don't have to deal with Vista.

Two minutes ago, I found out that Microsoft is going to force people to move to vista and it's going to pull off the market all copies of XP. Now, this shouldn't be a problem since I have a mac, but at the end it really puts me into trouble because I'm an illustrator and I need to share files from one platform to the other.

I do know that you can share files (PC- MAC, MAC PC) and stuff. The thing here is that uhm, before I bought the MAC, I was working on a PC with windows vista that I borrowed from work. Naturally when I bought my computer I backed up all the info into CDs to later on tranfer the info to the MAC.

I didn't thought I would have any problems trasfering the info. I mean, burning a CD is pretty basic knowledge. I've been doing that for years, right? So I burnt the cds, with Vista OS and bought the new mac.

the problem was that when I wanted to transfer the info from the Cds to the MAC, whenever I introduced the CD, the MAC prompted me with "this cd is blank" or something. Naturally I freaked out. Lucky for me I had an old PC with XP. When I tried to read the cds over there, the computer could read the Cd without any further issues. to make a long story short, I had to re-burn the cds with XP and surprise, surprise the mac could read the info.... o_O

why was this? I was told in the store that I could easily burn cds on a PC (regardless of the OS) and the mac wouldn't have any problems to read the info.

I can't check if I did something wrong through the burning process, because I don't have a PC with vista. So I can't check if it was me who screw the cd and not the OS.

I'm panicking here, because if I buy a new PC, it will have to have vista now. and if I can't share info between computers, then it's going to be pretty useless that I have a PC to cover all my bases in the file sharing area. because some clients have PCs and others have MACs).

CAn anyone explain me why I was experiencing this?

Oh yes, I burnt the Cds on vista with the default program. Since it wasn't my computer I couldn't install Nero or any of those burnt suits. So please help me. I already asked some people but nobody can tell me why that happened to me. I don't know if these Cds I burnt were botched and somehow if I burn other cds with vista Mac will be able to read them. I don't know. So help.

I'm new to this. Thanks :)

ETA
Wow, thanks you guys. It seems that the default settings on the vista burning suite was the one messing up the cds, because it left them open somehow, so the mac couldn't recognize them and it read them empty.

Two days ago a friend of mine that has a PC with vista came to my house and burnt some cds for me and the mac could totally read them! she explained me, I had to watch for the default settings. so yay me!
Anyway, I will follow your advice and get an external HD, just to cover all my bases.
Thank u so much! *hugs you all*
