BIG NEWS! POPUP SHOP, PHOTOSHOOT and FREE STUFF! 22-29 JUNE 2019!
Holy cow. It's really be a while since our last update - a few things planned have taken a little bit longer than expected, and some developments paused during 2018. But it's now almost halfway through 2019 (another holy cow!) and we finally have some SUPER exciting news.
These are: TWO things coming up we would like to announce happening in just a couple of weeks, being: our first ever POPUP SHOP!!!elebentyone!!11!!!!!!! ....and..... a PHOTOSHOOT for our upcoming website revamp for which we are still looking for a couple of folks to be in on the action!! Read on for more info....
POPUP SHOP
The WILDILOCKS POPUP SHOP shop will be happening @ 470 Victoria St from 22-29 June (11am-5pm each and every day, including weekends.) - the biggest EOFY sale we've ever had, and actually, biggest sale, PERIOD. We have had overstock of clothing and accessories for a while, and while we rotate stock, we have storage space we really need to clear - and we genuinely, seriously want to just give it away.
That's why we're offering ONE FREE ITEM up to the value of $20 from the popup shop per person who rocks up while it's on. How do you you get this item??? Well there's a small catch. Yeah, you knew there'd be a catch. But it's really super-small!! You can either:
* Share a link to this post ANYWHEREon social media (yes we're even going to honour FB shares for this) - and show us evidence of this on your phone when you come in to the popup shop or...
* come in and grab a flyer from the Wildilocks salon @ 347 Victoria St, during normal opening hours over the next 2 weeks (maybe grab a few more for friends too!), and just bring that flyer with you when you visit the popup shop during 22-29 June. You might find flyers at an event or two or other alternative businesses as well.
We really appreciate you helping spread the word for this once off popup shop - it's going to be HUGE. We have all the usual fun goth rockabilly and geeky stuff you've always loved from us, but at up to 90% off retail. Think t-shirts at $5-10, New Rock Boots at $50-$100, rockabilly & vintage style dresses $10-$30, pants & leggings $5-$30, hats $5-$10, bathers $5-$20, jewellery $2- $20, corsets $20-$70 and sooooooo, SO much more. I'm getting tired just thinking of the amount of carrying we have to do to get it all over there....
So yes. Super looking forward to having to NOT carry it back again at the end of the week, so PLEASE COME. Please? =)
okay item two:
PHOTOSHOOT
On the first day of the popup shop, 22 June, we are also doing a "day in the life of Wildilocks" photoshoot in the salon (while our clothing racks & stock are across the road it's perfect for a photographer to come in!), and we've got spots for a couple more clients on the day - we want this to be a genuine salon day rather than a "staged" shoot, so we've already offered existing clients 30% off salon services, but we've got room for a couple more to join the fun. And not only this discount, but you'll be offered a short studio-style portrait session once your hair is done, including a mini-makeup session, completely free. This offer is only available for a couple more clients, so if you're interested and available on June 22, give us a call on 03 9327 5037 asap to book in. This is also a once-off opportunity with a really special personal touch.
Vote 1 Greens

So, there's 3 days to go in the current federal election campaign. I can honestly say I have never before been this involved or engaged in politics - I have done three doorknocks (hosted two preps), one data party and two prepolling handing out how-to-vote cards. I've had some fantastic conversations with people, and had the occasional door slammed in my face. I've been invited in by a Muslim mother during Ramadan, chatted about the inevitable automation of much legal work with a young lawyer, been moaned to about transport issues (and tried to explain that self drive cars will soon alleviate many of the current delays), and been told several times that voting is pointless because all politicians are corrupt, on the take, and nothing ever changes anyway (yes, if you keep the major parties in power by thinking you're "wasting your vote" voting for anyone else, that's definitely going to continue being the case).
The scariest thing for me has been the fact that many people are so disengaged and disempowered. So prepolling has indeed been very important: statistics show around 20 percent of voters have no idea who they are going to vote for as they are going in, so, sad to say, getting your HTV into their hands can be crucial. Proud to say there have been more Greens volunteers than any other party at both the prepolls I was at. And it has been satisfying helping people get in the right queue.
My reason for becoming so involved at this point is that everything I've been paying attention to for the last few years seems to be rapidly accelerating, and at this rate, current mainstream politics doesn't have a hope of keeping up. We need to start laying the groundwork for the next few elections which are going to be crucial if we are to avoid the most catastrophic effects, no, NOT of climate change, but by something that is happening MUCH faster - and that is the rise of the robots.
You think it's not going to affect you? That I've been watching too much sci-fi? Think again. In the last few years, on the most visible level, we've seen supermarkets transformed as manned checkouts are replaced with automated ones. There are state-of-the-art warehouses in Melbourne now which have already replaced masses of formerly human jobs with automated forklifts and robot transport. The self-drive car is just around the corner for Australia (the technology is already here, safe, and getting even better - it's just a matter of legislation and then scaling), and with it, the self drive truck, train and bus. Legal discovery, medical symptom matching and research, professional writing and so much more, are already becoming the domain of new AI powered machines which are far more accurate (and cheap) than humans. This is not the industrial revolution - it's happening so much faster, and an order of magnitude more change is occurring.
A significant proportion of the workforce is due to be replaced in the next couple of decades, with technology that already exists now, thanks to the profit motive (and the concomitant lack of recognition of the value of human lives and meaning) economies of scale bringing the cost of these new technologies into economic viability for many large companies.
So when Turnbull spouts "Jobs and Growth! Jobs and Growth!" I have to shake my head in despair at how completely out of touch he, and mainstream politics is, to the freight train heading our way in which NO conservative economic stimulus is going to "save" or "create" jobs. The jobs will still be getting done, sure, but increasingly by robots, NOT humans. So unless you are going to instead angle for a luddite-style protest "No more Supermarket Self Checkouts!!!!" each time a new automation technology becomes visible and mainstream, you need to start looking at the ramifications of these inevitable changes that are upon us.
A first year economics student should be able to work out what's going to happen next: economy will shrink when there is less money being circulated thanks to automation (because all the extra profits are going to companies that are already very wealthy thank you very much, and invested in safe, non productive areas). Sure, better technology will still allow the economy to grow slightly even with the reduced number of humans employed and earning, but it is hugely risky to be redirecting such a large chunk of the economy without allowing existing living people to be a part of it.
And what we are inevitably going to be seeing in the next decade or so (and is already happening) is a big chunk (some estimates up to 40 percent) of people currently in employment becoming unemployed through *no fault of their own* and not due, as the Right so like to self-Righteously proclaim, due to bludging, laziness and "just not trying hard enough".
The thing we MOST need to change, on all spectrum of politics, is our understanding of our position now and where we are headed. We have created an amazingly complex society, and the technology we are creating is producing the vast majority of economic growth. We live on a finite planet, and there are many humans currently alive who, unless a plague wipes them out, are going to DEFINITELY be unemployed soon. We will need a social system which recognises this change, and so this part of the budget needs to be planned for, and structures put in place as early as possible to cope with this change. As economic growth will still be occurring, we need to look at where the profits are going (companies big enough to be able to afford to automate early on) and tax appropriately to stop that money being distributed only to those that own capital and siphoned out of circulation, and increasing inequality even further. But we don't need to think only about the economic support, we also need to think about how this affects people socially and emotionally. We need more funds to be directed to education, especially higher education in areas where there will be future need, and changing the type of education focus away from rote learning (any AI will do that better than you, human) to things AI's aren't as good at (yet) such as problem solving, management and logistics. But mostly, we need to recognise that even with retraining, many people will NOT be employable in the shifting landscape filled more and more with robots / AIs working better, faster, and cheaper than humans can.
And the thing that I want to beat right wing people about the head until they get it is this. The ECONOMY is what is going to suffer more and more as you keep taking more wealth out of active circulation. We already have the ability to allow many people to live without "earning a paid wage" (and they need to consume, whether they are working or not). A work ethic is useful, sure (it definitely increases life satisfaction), but it's time to start redefining what we consider important in life, and what kinds of work we value (note: not just traditional "paid" work counts). How about we start to genuinely value, economically, the raising of children? Of volunteering of all kinds? Or any endeavour than increases happiness for humans alive now?
That's where we need to start focusing our attention. The Greens are the *only* well-supported voice in Australian politics which recognises the value and dignity of human life. This is seen in refugee policy, income equality proposals, and the emerging guaranteed living wage proposal in their social policy, as well as arts funding and living wage proposals for artists. We know from emerging policy worldwide that basic income promotes growth, encourages economic activity. Even without the robots bearing down on us, it would be still be a good policy, but with the unemployment wave that is about to break, it's absolutely critical.

Ch-ch-ch-changes! Advance alert for NEW winter opening hours in effect from April
Now having had two lovely years in North Melbourne under our belts, we have looked closer at our trading history since the move, and have discovered some differences between here and our former CBD location. It seems that around the time daylight savings ends, there is reduced demand at the beginning of the week and earlier in the morning, but increased demand on Saturdays and evenings, - kinda makes sense because of the change in sunlight times and as weather gets colder in generally. So in response, this year we are making a trial change to our opening hours to better serve our clients and deliver services when they are most needed!
The new Winter Hours will take effect from Sunday 5th April 2015, in line with daylight savings, and will return to Summer Hours on Sunday 4th October 2015. We'll see how this first experimental change goes and if it's successful we will continue in upcoming years, also in line with Daylight Savings.
Winter Hours to be in effect from Sunday 5th April:
Monday - by appointment only
Tuesday - by appointment only
Wednesday - 11am - 5pm
Thursday - 11am - 7pm (til 9pm by appointment)
Friday - 11am - 7pm (til 9pm by appointment)
Saturday - 10am - 5pm (til 6pm by appointment)
Sunday - by appointment only
So there you go - the main change is that we will be closed now on Tuesdays except by appointment, and we will book appointments up til 9pm regularly on Thursday and Friday (previously 8pm) and Saturday til 6pm (formerly 5pm). We hope these changes work well for everyone!
In other news, we are continuing to add new stock to the webstore and we have had some lovely new additions on the shelves over the last few months, and more coming in a few weeks! Our favourites have been the new ranges from Liquor Brand (coming soon to the webstore) and more vintage swimwear from T-Bar which have been very popular over summer.
And as a last note, I'm travelling to San Francisco in a little over a month for the wedding of a dear friend, but would like to put the call out to any Wildilocks fans in the area to drop me a line and say hi if you'd like to catch up, as I will be around for a little less than a week.
Cheers & bye for now!
xo

We'll post again soon with our firm dates for moving in Melbourne, until then - stay WILD :D
Some sad news - and some fantastic news!
Firstly, it is with regret that I must announce that Wildilocks has made the decision to sell our Wellington salon, and while the new owner will be continuing with Farouk Systems CHI range of ammonia free colour & styling products, as well as continuing to supply Directions and Special Effects in store, they will be adding beauty services and the fashion section will be relocated back to Australia. Francia will also be offering extension services, but not dreadlocks. We wish Francia all the best and are confident our existing Wellington clientele will be serviced very well. This will leave Cass with the ability to focus more on the Australian salons which have been hard to manage with three all to keep an eye on! We will however continue our TradeMe sales, but from Australia, so there will be longer and slightly more expensive shipping, but still - available! So look forward to more regular updates, more new products, more specials and more interactivity!
This means also that for the next week, Wildilocks @ Cuba is having a BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE SALE on all clothing, boots and accessories in-store (second item must be of equal or lesser value.) Our final trading day for clothing will be Wednesday 27th June, and Francia will be reopening after some refit with the addition of beauty, on Thursday 5th July. Phone number will stay the same, and we will forward any email enquiries made after this date to her. Any vouchers not yet used have been agreed to be honoured by Francia, but all laybys or store credits for clothing & accessories must be completed by 27th June. Goodbye Wellington - we will miss you :(
And so - now for the fantastic news!
We are really excited to be able to announce that Wildilocks in Melbourne will be MOVING this year! We have lined up a fantastic new location and we are very pleased to say we will be opening our first ever street-frontage location in Australia! We won't be opening in the new location until September, but we will be getting our refit started nice and early (in fact it has already started...:) )
The new shop will be located at 347 Victoria St, North Melbourne (West Melbourne on Google Maps.) almost at the corner of Errol St, in the heart of the North Melbourne shopping precinct, and the 57 tram stops within metres of our front door, so while we will be a little further out, we're a lot easier to find and much more accessible. Only 10 minutes walk from Queen Victoria Markets, North Melbourne or Flagstaff Train Stations (or 15/20 minutes to Melbourne Central) - and actually only a 25 minute walk from our current CBD location in Little Collins St. There's also MUCH easier parking for those of you driving. So this is something we are hugely excited for. We are considering opening one Sunday a month for the North Melbourne Market days once we are re-situated too, and there may be other minor changes to our trading hours.
In the meantime Wildilocks @ The Lockworks will continue to trade as normal, and we will let you all know with lots of notice when we will be closing the doors there officially and opening anew! Wildilocks @ Base108 is going strong as always with Emma, Trent, Amy and Damon holding the fort!
We'd also like to confirm when we move to North Melbourne we will NOT be increasing prices in either salon in Australia - note our hourly rates have not gone up in years, and won't til at least 2013 or possibly 2014.
We look forwarded to keeping you all updated on the progress of the new shop and hope to see you soon.
