Four Judes in bible

edit

This article states that Catholics believe that all 4 Judes mentioned in the bible are the same person. However, the U.S.Conference of Catholic Bishops page (usccb.org) states that the church does NOT believe that all four are the same person. See quote below from Jude, THE LETTER OF JUDE | USCCB:

This letter is by its address attributed to “Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James” (Jude 1). Since he is not identified as an apostle, this designation can hardly be meant to refer to the Jude or Judas who is listed as one of the Twelve (Lk 6:16; Acts 1:13; cf. Jn 14:22). The person intended is almost certainly the other Jude, named in the gospels among the relatives of Jesus (Mt 13:55; Mk 6:3), and the James who is listed there as his brother is the one to whom the Letter of James is attributed (see the Introduction to James). Nothing else is known of this Jude, and the apparent need to identify him by reference to his better-known brother indicates that he was a rather obscure personage in the early church. 68.212.64.32 (talk) 21:38, 11 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Move discussion in progress

edit

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Bartholomew the Apostle which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. RMCD bot 12:32, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

But Bartholomew is someone else. This page needs clarity and changing the title will help so much in that. This page should not confuse the different Judes. The other Jude who was brother of 'James' (ie. Jacob) was one of the four sons of Joseph and Mary (see Matthew 13:55 & Mark 6:3), ie. half-brothers to Jesus. But this Jude Thaddeus must have been a different Jude, since those four brothers didn't follow him before his death (Matthew 12:46). Zohre6 (talk) 07:44, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

discrepancy re Jude's celebration/ commemoration dates in the Eastern Orthodox Church

edit

The discrepancy lies only a few paragraphs apart: that Jude/Thaddeus' dates are in June (Eastern Orthodoxy) and in October (Eastern Orthodoxy). Or is this down to the vast confusion that historically exists over his forename? If so, someone with more knowledge than I should clarify this little page burp. Brother Or Cousin, of Jesus?

edit

Some sources indicate that Jude was a son of Mary, who was a cousin to Virgin Mary... suggesting that Jude was Jesus' cousin.Damiano (talk) 12:43, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

That Jude who was brother of 'James' (ie. Jacob) was one of the four sons of Joseph and Mary (see Matthew 13:55 & Mark 6:3), ie. half-brothers to Jesus. But this Jude Thaddeus COULD have been a different Jude, and was more likely to have been different, since these four brothers didn't follow him before his death (Matthew 12:46). The reference in Luke 6:16 to 'Jude of James' (as the 12th apostle since Luke doesn't list his as Thaddeus) means this 12th disciple Jude was either a son of the apostle James/Jacob, ie grandson of Zebedee, or quite likely a son of another James/Jacob who was unrelated to James and John. It is incorrect to assume he was one of the brothers of Jesus, since none of them were his followers at that time. Zohre6 (talk) 07:55, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
