Crystallography

edit

Crystallography uses these things to denote whether a plane or direction is being discussed, and whether it's generic or specific. I have put up a basic account of their use in Crystallography#Notation, but you may want to wait a few days for it to stabilize before you copy it into this article. This may also convince someone to finally flesh out Miller index.--Joel 06:14 & :18, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Usage in chat

edit

On chatrooms and message boards, actions are put in brackets.

"I know she can't sing, but I like Lindsay Lohan {ducks from flying vegetables}."

There's also the "Insert Item" usage.

"I don't care if [insert nominee here] deserves to be in the hall of fame, I think that Maris should be in."

Top table replacement

edit

I spent a bit laying this out, does it seem at all viable? User:Remsense/brackets Remsense   02:53, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@JMF (or whoever it may concern), does this have any sort of appeal? Remsense   22:09, 6 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Apart from the heavy line under the symbols row, looks good to me. Even with that line, it is better than the current mess. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 23:25, 6 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
are you partial to the glyphs being rendered in serif? Remsense   00:06, 7 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JMF what do you think now? Remsense   01:23, 7 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
yes, better.
But just to be awkward, maybe a heavier line above the second row of symbols? (to clarify that Parentheses (AmE) is annotating the symbol above). Same density as the surrounding box?
Serif is certainly better for detail (as in apostrophe v prime distinction) but "house style" is sans. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 07:49, 7 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Don't forget to check dark mode. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 07:52, 7 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
(Primarily designed in dark mode!)
Added the line. Any other notes? Remsense   00:34, 8 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Odd. On my mobile, the lines are clear. On my laptop, also using Chrome, there are no lines anywhere.
Just go with it, it doesn't need a big angst. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 18:31, 8 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sure! I'll tinker with it more sometime. Remsense   18:36, 8 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

History section

I'm looking to improve this article after reading it, and am wondering if anyone has any reliable sources to use for the History section. Super m001 (talk) 00:33, 22 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Mobile issue with top table

edit

Hello, the text wrapping on the top table on mobile seems very extreme. I'm not sure if it's exclusive to this article, but would it be ok if someone reduced the width of it? Thanks!

A screenshot of the Wikipedia article for brackets, showcasing subjectively incorrect and small wrapping of text around the large table at the top of the article.

The table is provided by Template:Bracket terms. The obvious solution would seem to be to make the table 1x4 rather than 2x2. Is there a templates wizard in the house? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 11:19, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
The problem is within the stylesheet, which is setting the table to float:right. For now, I've just made it so that it uses {{clear}} if on mobile, but a better long term solution would be to additionally make it float:center rather than right when on mobile. Any fixes would only need to be made in CSS and not the template. Also note that {{bracket terms}} is used only on this page and nowhere else, per the what links here. ~ oklopfer (💬) 18:51, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
