cofounder uncertainty/dispute

edit

The article currently lists two cofounders in the infobox, Martin Odersky and Jonas Bonér. That is also what the official company "About" page says. On the other hand, the Team page used to list (Internet Archive link) three people as co-founders: Odersky, Bonér, and Paul Phillips. The latter is no longer with the company and I gather there is some bad blood involved, which may account for the discrepancy. I have no knowledge of the company or any of its personnel myself; just saw this disagreement referenced elsewhere, and noticed that we in a sense are "taking sides", though probably unintentionally. Maybe there is third-party contemporary press coverage that can clear it up and provide a source? --Delirium (talk) 22:34, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Both versions are correct, in a sense, but we need to take a trip down the history of the company.
The roots of the company lie in two different companies, which subsequently merged. The first was "Scala Solutions Sàrl", founded in Lausanne, Switzerland; the second was "Scalable Solutions AB", founded in Uppsala, Sweden.
- Scala Solutions was incorporated on 30 July 2010 as a startup from EPFL. The original founders were Martin Odersky and François Stieger. You may check this information at the Commercial Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud. Click on "Show radiation" for the full history.
- Scalable Solutions was founded by Jonas Bonér in Uppsala, Sweden in 2008, according to his résumé page.
These two companies subsequently merged to become Typesafe, which was incorporated on 22 December 2010 in Delaware, as can be seen by searching at the Division of Corporations.
It is at this time that Paul Phillips entered the picture as a founder. The list of the people at Typesafe in its initial stages can be found here: https://web.archive.org/web/20110831165920/http://typesafe.com/company/team (a couple of years before the page you linked to)
So, Paul Phillips was indeed one of the founders when Typesafe as a company was incorporated. On the other hand, since the company arose from the merger of two previous existing entities, it is also correct to say that he was not one of the original founders of its preceding component entities. Therefore it basically depends on whether you wish to consider the actual incorporation of the company as it exists now, or the complete history of the company back to its origins.
Concerning the contents of the "about" page of the company, it seemingly simply changed over time to reflect the actual people involved at each time. It is not a complete list of all the people involved in the past, which explains the discrepancy that you noticed.
One more bit of information, incidentally. The article currently states that "Lightbend initiated the Scala Days conference". That is incorrect: the first edition of Scala Days took place on April 15-16, 2010 and neither Lightbend nor Scala Solutions actually even existed at that time. The first edition was organized by the LAMP laboratory at EPFL, Lausanne, where it took place. Lightbend (then Typesafe) took over the following year, in 2011 at Stanford. Alleged promotional content in 'Products' section

edit

@NiftyyyNofteeeee You removed this section. I will revert that change for now.

The Product list is useful and seems accurate to me. It's been there for years. Lightbend employees have edited it in the past, but it doesn't seem very promotional to me. I can agree that the language around the subscription services is a bit buzzwordy, so you can reword that if you think it necessary. But please keep the section intact.

It may also be worth restructuring the section with the reduction in products in the past year or so, to include past contributions to products. Single-item lists don't look very nice. WDYT? Yawkat (talk) 19:56, 27 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm not objecting your idea and approach. It may really help the page. NiftyyyNofteeeee (talk) 13:09, 7 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Company name is now akka.io

edit

or "akka.io (formerly Lightbend)" or "akka (formerly Lightbend)"
