Yesterday I broke down a bunch of cardboard boxes for recycling. They were still too big to fit in my bin, so I drove up to the middle school up the street to put them in the recycling container in their parking lot. But when I got there, the containers were both full to overflowing and had big signs taped on the sides the said "If the containers are full go to another location. Leaving items on the ground outside the containers is ILLEGAL DUMPING not recycling!!" Okay, two problems: One, the containers are nearly always full. Two, I don't know where another location is- I know of several other containers for paper, but not ones that will take cardboard and other materials. So I got out my red sharpie and made a sign of my own: "Containers are ALWAYS full. Perhaps you could arrange to have them picked up more often. HTH, HAND." and underneath "go to another location" on both signs I wrote "WHERE??" because, seriously, that would be helpful information to have, wouldn't it?
For the record, I didn't leave my cardboard on the ground. I was tempted to, but it's still in my truck til I find another place to drop it off.
Hmm. I have been neglecting my blog(s) for years now. Let's see if I can get this thing up and running again.
I tried a new recipe last night and it was pretty good. I have an embarrassing number of cookbooks, I could try a new recipe every day for the rest of my life and never get through all of them- seriously. I'm kind of embarrassed by how many Rachael Ray cookbooks I have in particular- I know she's annoying and overexposed, but her recipes do tend to be husband-pleasers. So, on those days when late afternoon hits and I haven't even begun to think about what to make for dinner, I know I can pull out one of her books and find something quick and easy and not from a box. Last night it was chicken breasts with orange relish: chop up 6 navel oranges, half a red onion, a handful of oregano leaves, and put it all in a bowl with a little red wine vinegar, olive oil and s&p. Rub a little balsamic vinegar on some chicken breast fillets, sprinkle with s&p, throw them in the skillet for 3-4 minutes a side. Serve the breasts topped with the relish, and I also cooked up some green beans to go with, and it took maybe an hour start to finish including the trip to the grocery store. I did end up with about twice as much of the orange relish as I needed but maybe we can try it on something else over the weekend.
This is Slinkee. Looks like a sweet kitty, right? Most of the time, she is. ( Collapse )
I'm going out of town for a few days next week and can't ask my housesitter to give Slinkee her pills, so I'm boarding her at the vet's while I'm gone. They're going to give her a bath, too. Wish them luck!
Larry and I were out last night and this truck passed us on the highway with a trailer with graphics all over it that said GUM REMOVAL SPECIALISTS. I was like "..seriously?" so Larry pulled up next to them so we could look again. Sure enough, it said "We remove chewing gum from any surface!" OK.. a) that's a real business? and b) wtf do they have in that trailer? I'm thinking- putty knife, goo-gone, ice cubes, peanut butter. Seems like that could all fit in a tote, but what do I know?
So I'm thinking of starting up my own business going around untangling knots. I'll need a trailer to carry around a fork, of course.
* Grab the nearest book. * Open the book to page 56. * Find the fifth sentence. * Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions if you want to. * Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
