knowledge needed! Chattanooga, Upstate SC

findyourspot.com's latest results for me include Chattanooga, Tennessee and Greenville, South Carolina.

Greenville's more convenient for being able to visit family but I can't help but to notice that Bob Jones University is there, and I've seen articles that refer to it as very conservative. I'm Catholic and, depending on definition, either left-leaning moderate or liberal.

Chattanooga seems more vibrant with a more rounded spectrum, but the economy doesn't appear to be as diversified and it's much more inconvenient with respect to the ability to get to my family quickly. I've had to do that twice in the last three years, though I'm hoping it will be a while before it happens again.

Any comments about the above impressions? I've visited both places but I've never really looked into living either.

Things that matter:
  • Good transportation and transit. I do drive, but...
  • Nicely diversified economy with plenty of job opportunities.
  • Diverse in terms of politics, culture and lifestyles — I like a good mix of traditional and progressive.
  • Relatively warm winters, but I do prefer four seasons. Hot summers aren't a problem.
  • Educational opportunities (need not necessarily be formal).
  • Not completely family oriented; I'm single without kids and plan to stay that way.
  • Plenty of things to do.
  • Plenty of places nearby for exploration.
  • Pretty terrain.
  • At or below the average cost of living in the US.
I'm originally from Eastern North Carolina though I lived in Raleigh for several years before relocating to Atlanta in 2006. I've thought about living outside the Southeast US but I'm most comfortable here; so I'll just take vacations instead. :)

new city/college

Hi everyone--

I'm looking for a town with a good university/community college for the arts. I'd love a vegetarian, nature, dog friendly place, similar to the vibe of my hometown, Tucson, AZ. I'd like to stay in the Southwest, but I'm willing to venture out. New Mexico and Colorado, have interested me... but I'm not sure! I should mention that I'm 20 and don't have much money.

Thanks for your help,

Sadie

Creative Isolation

Thanks to those who responded to my previous request, now I have another:

I have been thinking I would like to travel to somewhere I could be isolated so as to write without any distractions. I'd go for my spring break in March; it would have to be somewhere I can get to by bus or train from NYC in a few hours. It would be nice to be somewhere with lots of nature, but where I could rent a house or cabin and not have to deal with camping (or possibly a campsite that has cabins available? But I'd rather have a private bathroom). There should be a walkable grocery store (unless there's a bus I can take), and not having a TV would be preferable, but not essential. So--perhaps renting in an off-season ski town, or is it still ski season in March? I don't want to be in the snow. Any ideas?

Communes

I'm looking for a secular, vegetarian or vegetarian friendly, queer friendly commune or intentional community of some sort. I've been wanting to go abroad, Ireland or the UK sound appealing right now, but I could stay in the US as well. I want a self-sustaining community that grows its own food and such--somewhere I can actually see the products of my labor and not spend my life doing work that gets exchanged for money that I exchange for things... any ideas?

Lookin for a BIG city with a small town heart

Currently residing in Israel. 42, work full-time. May move to the US in a year when I'm done with studies and if my girlfriend's folks move back there. All her family are in LA so it's likely we'd be in the area. Not crazy about the city of LA though.

Drove through Pasadena once, looked fine, quiet-ish.

I'd like to live in a city with a small town atmosphere. Good weather, by the sea, bohemian culture, LOTS of art and cultural happenings, and safe.

Any thoughts on that? Thanks for lookin

Where are you?

Where do you live? (City/Town, State/Province, and Country if not USA/Canada)
In general, do you like living there?

What do you like about living there?
What do you hate about living there?

Where else have you lived and how would you compare to your current location (better, worse, the same?)

If someone wanted to move to where you live, would you recommend them to move there or try to persuade them to move elsewhere? Why?

If someone wanted to move somewhere (anywhere, not just where you live) where they didn't know anyone, what is the best thing to do it?

Find a job first from afar, then move. (if this, how?)
or
Move first, crash in a cheap hostel/hotel/other temp lodging for a few days while finding job?
