Summary: Pacing, Ross began to consider the situation.
Cautiously, Phoebe snuck through the window, slipping into her chambers--
--where a hand closed over her shoulder, yanking her in.
“Aha!” Looking pleased with himself, Chancellor Ross, her majordomo, smirked at her. “I knew you’d been sneaking out every night, and now I’ve finally caught you in the act.”
“Oh, back off,” she muttered, shrugging out of his grip. She smirked, raising a blood-stained dagger into his line of vision, and enjoying his resulting look of shock. “I’ve been a very busy Princess, tonight.”
“Your Highness...” Swallowing, Ross regarded the red-gleaming blade. “Just...what have you been up to...?”
“You know that obnoxious Duke who’s holed himself up in the north wing? The one who’s been threatening to steal the nation’s wealth, if I don‘t agree to marry him?” Phoebe smiled to herself. “He’s not going to be a problem anymore.”
Ross gawked at her. “What? You’re not telling me...” He laughed nervously as she glanced in his direction. “You aren’t seriously telling me that you assassinated His Grace...are you?”
She tossed the dagger carelessly onto her vanity table, ignoring the bits of blood spatter that the action created on the table’s glossy surface.
“Sometimes men need to be forced to accept the word no,” she responded. “Even if you have to do it the hard way.”
“Wait a minute...” Pacing, Ross began to consider the situation. “Is that why Lord Hamahs suddenly vanished, as soon as he began to try to insinuate himself into the Court? And why the Count of Likhaven...’became indisposed’ in the middle of the night, and no one ever saw him again?”
“Along with Prince Zammel’s self-imposed exile, which called off his invasion of my territory,” Phoebe confirmed.
“You mean, all this time, you’ve been acting the noble Princess by day, and assassinating enemies at night?!”
The sash of Phoebe’s favorite silk robe was wrapped tightly around his neck from behind, and he felt himself being yanked against his Princess.
“I dare you to tell anybody the truth,” she whispered in his ear.
Wincing as she tightened the sash ever so slightly, Ross tried to grin. “I wouldn’t dream of it,” he mumbled.
