#1 -- Take something about one of your characters that defines him/her (it can be a special ability or even a flaw, as long as it is a significant trait) and put the character into a situation where that trait no longer applies (loss of an ability, overcoming a phobia, etc). How does the character's self-image change? How does it affect the way other characters see your character? Does it make your character stronger, or is it the catalyst that sends your character into a downward spiral?

Optional Challenge: Write your response to this prompt entirely from the viewpoint of a secondary character, a la Nick Carraway.

Music Prompts

Musical tastes are totally subjective. What I love you might cover your ears for, what I refuse to listen to might be your favoritest. This week I'm going to post mp3s (ripped from CDs I bought, just to be legal about it) of some of my favorites. Write about the emotions these songs evoke, good or bad. Write what these songs bring to mind after a couple of listenings.

Monday, September 14: Can't Give It Up
Tuesday, September 15: Lords of Kobol
Wednesday, September 16: Theme for Mara
Thursday, September 17: Golden Lady

Friday, September 18:

(This is a five-day "week." :)

I'm leaving off the artists on purpose. If that's information you'd like to have, let me know.

This is week.... 5?

Sorry about the delay, STUFF HAPPENED.

So in this week's free writing, I thought we could all CHALLENGE ourselves. That is, if you usually write first person, try writing third person, and vice versa. Are you great at writing dialogue but skimp on the descriptions? DESCRIBE something then. Some suggestions:

- Describe a place, from the POV of one of your characters if you like
- Write a brief "action" sequence. A short slap-fight between friends? Or an epic battle between mortal enemies?
- Write something without any dialogue at all, using only character actions to get motivations across.
- ...or write something with nothing but dialogue, and have the reader infer the actions from what is being said.

In the end, it doesn't matter what you decide to write, as long as it deviates from your "standard" fare.

  • Metal
  • Incentive
  • Fade
  • Chance
  • Ability

Phrases:

He tried to remember who had talked him into this.

"You know...nothing's as tempting as a locked door"

It wasn't her fault.

Prompts used: made-up language and like ants
Challenge: create a need

They speak to each other in made-up words. They're not twins, so it's not twin language, but they have a secret link, an unbreakable code. Over cups of cold coffee and bowls of dry cereal, they murmur back and forth, exchanging memories and dreams, caressing and comforting each other with the fluttering sounds of their secret language.

When they go out, people assume they are lovers, murmuring sweet nothings just low enough to spare strangers from the unbearable sweetness. But they are not; they have never even touched. Their unity is of words, not flesh.

In the cool evenings, as distant stars drown in the electric galaxy of city lights, they drift from rooftop to rooftop, seeking the sky, begging in their secret language for it to take them home. Its indifference drives them down, back to the crude and foul people who teem like ants in their steel nests.

Tomorrow, they will follow the same pattern, and hope in vain for a different ending.

XD Obviously I lied when I said I'd have another prompt post up by Wednesday.  Somehow work ate my life.  But!  Here's another prompt post for the last day of the prompt week, hopefully to give you that one short burst!
  • Mist
  • Close the curtains
  • Brain-washed
  • Thumbelina

Challenge: Pick someone you've met but don't actually know, and write your story/character based on this person.  Maybe your character has the same occupation, or the same looks, or the same annoying habit of scratching their nose every time they look you in the eye.  Explore.

Super Challenge:  Do as many five-minute freewrites as you can throughout the day, using as many prompts as you can (one prompt her piece).  Remember--anything 100 words or more counts as a drabble and can be posted on the community!   Person who does the most prompts at the end of the day wins a shiny banner for their profile and a prize!  (cut-off time is 11:59 pm, in whatever time zone you're in).

Challenge: need something.

(edit: sorry tried to just post it, but a typo bugs me and one paragraph seems out of order. bad me!)

She sighed as she drove through the canyon. It used to be her favorite drive, this curvy mountain pass between the valley and the beach. Now it gave her a headache.

And naturally the radio signal faded in and out. The Eagles "Hotel California" gave way to Wilson Philips singing "Release me". "Sorry kids, your parents were better." Her voice sounded strange to her own ears, croaking with lack of use.

Is this the frustration of growing old? Every pleasure turned to irritation and every excitement to pain?

Well it sucked.

Okay, inhaled. Even after all these years she could hear her grandmother admonishing her. "Suck is such a descriptive term. dear. It isn't lady like."

Not that she was feeling very lady like.

Her foot pressed down on the accelerator. If she went faster, maybe the fluid in her ears that made her dizzy would just not be able to catch up, or settle in some nook farther in and leave her to enjoy this breathtaking drive.

For there it was: The pacific ocean. She had driven 2400 miles, over two days, barely stopping to sleep. This wide expanse of sea that had always welcomed her, always beckoned her had called from half a continent away. And here she was, obedient as an acolyte to her priestess.

A sharp turn took it out of her sight and she felt a pang in her chest. Another turn, then another, and at last the highway was before her. With the experience of thousands of these drives, she turned left and hugged the cliffs, worse this year after El Nino lashed at the shore. The road had an unfamiliar turn in it. Oh yes, the road had washed out. It soon returned her to the ocean side and she pulled over. She couldn't take the chance of being pulled away again.

With impatience, she waited for other cars to pass by, foolish drivers too deaf to the siren's call. At last free, she kicked her shoes off, and stepped onto the sand. The sound of the silence between the waves touched her soul, dragging her steps closer and closer until the cold salt water tickled her toes.

At last, she was home.

Hey fellow writers!  =D  I'm really excited to see that the prompts are helping some of you, and hope that more of you (the community now has 24 members!) will benefit from the prompts and share your writing with us.

I'm really bad at doing huge one-post prompts, so what I'm going to do instead is make several prompt posts.  Please bear with me!  Prompts for the first part of the week:
  • Made-up words
  • Sketchy
  • Release me
  • Like ants
  • Knife wound
Challenge:
From the Observation Deck by Naomi Epel:  Create a need.  Make your character want something, whether it be something as simple as a glass of water, or something as important as findingTheBookorI'llDIEOMG.  "Humans beings are constantly yearning.  Every moment we are wanting something.  Even if the desire is not to desire.  Or if the desire is to desire."

=D Have fun! I'll be back on Wednesday for another prompt post!

The prompt isn't directly in this piece, but it's sort of...there anyway? More vampire stuff. Am so sorry for double-posting! Hopefully there'll be more replies to the prompts soon~

[personal profile] lilrinnieb asked a pretty valid question, and I thought I'd post the answer here for everyone:

Q:  Are we allowed to do prompts from previous weeks as long as we tag them accordingly? That is, can we go back and use a prompt from a previous week, or are we just SOL if we don't get the prompt done during that week and that week only?

A:  You can use prompts from any of the weeks you want as long as you tag them (week 1, week 2, etc.) and tell us which prompt you use.

Also, keep in mind that you don't actually have to include the prompt in your freewrite.  Maybe you started out thinking about a certain prompt, and then your freewrite piece didn't include any mention of the prompt because you ran out of time, or the piece veered off in a different direction.  You can still list that prompt.

Hello. I've had a long, long writer's block and am trying to get back to writing. It's an uphill battle right now.
Here is a small response to the prompt "I know you want me." To be honest, the prompt only shows up for a brief cameo. Any concrit is welcome. I'm always looking to improve.

Also, there is a bit of language in this. Just saying as a precaution.
And I mean no offense to Chinese takeout. I LOVE takeout.

This week we're getting our inspiration from music. Forget the lyrics, or if you love/hate/have-never-heard-of any of these before. This week we're using solely the song titles as our jumping off points.  Have fun and lots of luck! :D

Prompts:

1. Use somebody2. Living for the night
3. I know you want me4. It's a business doing pleasure with you
5. Second chance6. Love your love the most
7. People are crazy8. Sound of madness
9. Never say never10. Welcome to the future

---

Please indicate which prompt(s) you ended up use and give all the necessary warnings and ratings and don't forget to slide the long ones behind a cut. If you could tag your response with week two that would be fantastically helpful.

This week we learned that I don't really know the meaning of free writing (this kind of turned into a one-shot of sorts) and apparently I'm not quite ready to give up my fandom security blanket just yet (although if I hadn't told you the characters names, you probably never would have guessed). If I had any self-respect at all this would have stayed just a cracktastic idea in my head, lol. What can I say, I got the prompt nicknames and I just couldn't stop myself.

Ok, now I have no idea why I can't get the middle of this fic to stay inside the cut.  Or why it's not doing it over at my journal (even though I copied the code straight from there) but if you still want to read this mess, you can here:  Letters We Never Should Have Written

It's been awhile since I've posted anything I've written online. This is me beginning to feel the way with my main character for the novel that is trying to exist. I'm not sure it has a place in the novel but I figure something like this may occur near the start of it.

I didn't really know where I was going with this, I just wrote. I didn't correct much of anything - I don't think there are any typos, but feel free to point any out.
