SteamEngine Station
A Steam Engine waiting in a Depot.

The Train is your main mode of transportation throughout The Void. It is essentially a mobile base, containing all structures built by a player, and acting as the anchoring point of all exploration in the game.

Throughout the game, the Train can be upgraded in length, power, and resistance, thanks to different Engines and technologies. This is all done via the Building Console, found in most Depots. There are also a multitude of decorative modifications that can be made to the wagons and cabin of the Train.

Engines

Trolley

Trolley
The starting Trolley.

The initial state of the Train, the Trolley is the weakest of all engine types. It is made up of 4 different parts:

  • The Trolley Handle, which allows manual speeding up of the Train
  • The Brake, allowing the Train to stop
  • The Transmission, allowing the Train to change direction
  • The Horn, allowing the Train to honk

Steam Engine

The Steam Engine is the first major upgrade for the Train, allowing it to reach much higher speeds at the cost of Steam Battery . It also increases the maximum platform capacity of the Train by 2. Starting platform capacity is 6, thus making the maximum capacity after obtaining the Steam Engine 8.

In order to be constructed, the Locomotive of the Train needs to be at minimum 3 platforms long. If a 4th platform is available, it can be used as the Locomotive's cabin.

SteamEngine Console
The controls on a Steam Engine.

All controls of the Steam Engine are contained in one small section directly behind the engine itself. These are all the same controls as the Trolley, with the addition of the Afterburner, and the Engine Controls interface. The Afterburner is just quick access to the Trains' maximum speed setting, while the Engine Controls interface contains the fuel and water slots, as well as the full speed controls for the Train.

it should be noted that trolley parts (except the Trolley Handle) can still be used on the train after it's upgraded to steam engine, simplifying access to the train's controls, or allowing multiple brakes.

Diesel Engine

The Diesel Engine is the third and final upgrade for the Trains' engine. It reaches the highest speed possible but only takes Diesel Battery as fuel.

Diesel engine front view

The controls of the Diesel Engine are the same as the Steam one.

The Diesel Engine can use the Fast speed option at the Engine handle, and increases the maximum platform capacity to 12.

And the Afterburner unlocks its full potential by overdriving the Engine (this burns through fuel faster though)
