While friending me first is appreciated, it is not necessary. I will not friend you back without a comment due to the fact that I do post original fic and works of progress under a friends lock. If you are only interested in my fanfiction and completed work, then you do not need me to friend you back. Works in progress are usually friends-locked because I will continuously edit the work. Anything under a friends-lock will not be cross-posted outside of this journal, so you will never be linked to a friends-locked post.
Con-crit is always appreciated ♥.

Update: (1/12/2013) virdant has been closed for a while, but making a note here on the welcome page that it is, as previously stated, officially closed. Posts, if any, are sporadic and depend on my mood. Potentially, however, there will be some meta. However, that does not mean that I have stopped writing--you can see my writing, illustrated, at Chemorphesis.
If you're still reading this, I have a Ko-Fi that you can find [ here ].
As always, please support chemorphesis. If there is nothing else that you do, take a moment to check out the research project that I have poured my heart, soul, and time into. Not to mention the fact that Pann and Annie have spent so much time turning my writing into gorgeous graphic novels that they deserve more acknowledgement than they've received.
Title: All Roads Author:virdant Length: 7,000 words; one-shot Rating: PG Genre: AU, gen Pairing: Can be interpreted as Taguchi/Ueda Summary:Taguchi says, I'm turning thirty this year." In the end, all roads lead to Rome. Warning: None. Notes: It is not critical to read To Walk the Higher Road before reading All Roads, but I strongly recommend reading Higher Road and the rest of Road Not Taken AU. All Roads stands as the concluding story of The Road Not Taken, and is best approached with the understanding of the underlying concept: Taguchi is one of the frontman of KAT-TUN.

All Roads Post-Writing Commentary.
Welcome to what is arguably my favorite part of writing Road Not Taken AU—the post-writing commentary, where I write a lot about writing, my feelings, and how I’m totally going to quit fandom after this fic. This time, I think it’ll stick.
This is probably the first Road Not Taken fanfic that wasn’t technically for Rei. Of course, Rei probably never actually wanted any of this fanfic world, but I like pretending that I’m a dignified adult who has better things to do than to write trash fanfic AUs about the bleakness of the world and the entertainment industry.
I started (and finished) this way before Taguchi announced his solo career, but amusingly, it works just as well. In fact, it works better, because Komine Rena isn’t here and it’s pretty obvious in All Roads that Taguchi’s issues are with an oppressive management controlling his every move over wanting to get married. This fits, actually, even better with the current narrative that we have about Taguchi’s motivations. I guess this is where you say “#calledit”?
Title: Bypass Author:virdant Length: 15,000 words approximately; one-shot Rating: PG-13 Genre: AU, gen Pairing: None Summary: Part 3 of Road Not Taken AU When Koki was young—as young as Juri is now, maybe even younger, it’s hard to remember—he does his best to stand out.
Stand out the right way, with a nice smile and a can-do attitude. He’s a thug, but he’s a thug who respects his elders and knows how to play Johnny’s game. He networked with the other boys, making his way up the ranks until he was there beside Yamashita Tomohisa, the golden boy of all Juniors. Warning: References and depictions of violence and depression. Notes: It is not critical to read To Walk the Higher Road or Waiting at the Crossroads before reading Bypass. Bypass was written with the intent that the reader has already read both; however, it should be fine as a stand-along. This was meant to rest as a secondary P.O.V. in Road Not Taken AU, and is best approached with the understanding of the underlying concept: Taguchi is one of the frontman of KAT-TUN.
Post-writing commentary and notes are on an annotated pdf here: LJ Post PDF only
For Rei, as usual. Sorry it took two years. Happy Birthday. Let's keep walking forward.
Bypass
One.
When Koki was young—as young as Juri is now, maybe even younger, it’s hard to remember—he does his best to stand out.
He thought he was set, then. He had made it. All it took was hard work and elbow grease and a few too many American Hip Hop CDs.
So he got complacent. Just a little. Just: showing up a few minutes late to group practice—earlier than Yamapi, because he wasn’t that high up—or being snippy with his juniors instead of unfailingly courteous to his peers. It was only a bit complacent, but it was enough.
“I had such high hopes for you,” his manager at the time said, a little sadly. He shared this manager with the others in his group—BAD IMAGE GENERATION had their own manager, and Koki knew this meant that he had made it. His manager shook his head, disappointed. A month ago, two months ago, the action would have made Koki shrivel up and promise to do better.
“What high hopes?” Koki sneered. “Aren’t I flying past them already?”
A week later, Koki was assigned to Domoto Koichi’s new shiny back-dancing troupe. Even though it wasn’t phrased as a demotion, he knows what it is.
“I had such high hopes for you,” his manager had said.

Title: Watching at the Crossroads Author:virdant Length: 6,340 words; one-shot Rating: PG-13 Genre: AU, gen Pairing: Can be interpreted as Taguchi/Ueda Summary: Part 2 of Road Not Taken AU“I want to keep Uepi’s music all to myself,” Taguchi's message says. A second message follows a second later, “If you want to write for the others, I don’t mind.”
Ueda clenches his phone and throws it onto his sofa where it slides between the cushions. He brings his hands down flat over the keyboard, letting the discordant noise wash over him and wonders when Taguchi’s opinion mattered so much. Warning: None. Notes: It is not critical to read To Walk the Higher Road before reading Crossroads. Crossroads was written with the intent that the reader has already read Higher Road; however, I've been told that it's fine stand-alone. This was meant to rest as a secondary P.O.V. in Road Not Taken AU, and is best approached with the understanding of the underlying concept: Taguchi is one of the frontman of KAT-TUN.
Thank you to Trell, wonderful editor as always. Next time we do a writing trade I am going to make sure I have more commas than you.
For Rei, as usual. Happy Birthday. Let's keep walking forward.
Watching at the Crossroads
There’s a legend, and this is how it goes.
You take your guitar and you go to the crossroads. You get there at midnight, and sit down and start playing, and if you’re lucky, the devil will appear and take your guitar and he’ll tune it and play it and it’ll be the best you’ve heard, because devil’s music is music that touches the soul.
He’ll hand the guitar back and ask if you’d like to learn from him.
And this is the place where you get to choose. If you say yes, then he’ll take your soul and your music will shine over the world. If you say no, then you walk away with your guitar and the memory of music you can never quite reach.

Watching at the Crossroads Post-writing commentary
Firstly, * waves hands vaguely * I’m not entirely sure why I’m still writing KAT-TUN. I suppose a primary motivation is that I really do want to see this world to some sort of closure, but that won’t actually happen until somebody (such as Rei) writes the Kame POV.
(I mean, I could write the Kame POV, but you really don’t want me to keep writing KAT-TUN. You want me on to more exciting pastures, like BOYBAND AUs of LES MIS.)
Secondly, welcome to one of the many post-writing commentaries that I’ve done. It’s becoming a bit of a habit, but I’ll make the usual warnings.
The following is a (probably quite long, but I wouldn’t know since I just started writing) post-writing commentary for Crossroads. It is important that you have read Crossroads before you read the post-writing commentary, because I’ll be discussing the text explicitly and going over my thought-process. Unless you have the burning desire to not understand what is going on, you should go read Crossroads (helpfully linked multiple times throughout this entire paragraph for those incapable of scrolling up). It might also be a good idea to read To Walk the Higher Road, which you should have read before you read Crossroads .
In case the tone of the above paragraphs haven’t warned you, this commentary is likely to be sarcastic, scathing, and cynical. It is also likely to be very coldly critical of the text, as well as general writing trends in various fandoms. This is essentially a very long warning, and let’s now start the commentary.
( omg look COMMENTARYCollapse ) Tl;dr: I have a lot of themes in my writing and you should go read it with renewed vision.
Length: ~25,000 words (so far) Rating: PG-13 Genre: AU, Gen Characters/Pairing: Taguchi-centric; implications of Kamenashi/Taguchi and Taguchi/Ueda Summary: Sometimes, decisions have long-standing repercussions. Taguchi is the one of the frontman of KAT-TUN. Notes: Did I mention this was AU?
Pre-reading Notes:
Road Not Taken AU is best described by its premise: this is an AU where Taguchi is one of the frontmen of KAT-TUN. Road Not Taken begins with: To Walk the Higher Road, which is essentially the Taguchi POV of the entire situation. It is followed by a sequel/alternate point of view: Watching at the Crossroads, which is narrated through Ueda's POV. Bypass depicts how this situation affects other members through Koki's POV. It is concluded with All Roads, narrated through Nakamaru's POV, to come in November 2016.
Watching at the Crossroads [LJ] [AO3] Length: 6,340 words; one-shot Rating: PG-13 Genre: AU, gen Pairing: Can be interpreted as Taguchi/Ueda Summary:“I want to keep Uepi’s music all to myself,” Taguchi's message says.
Warnings: None.

Title: To Walk the Higher Road Author:virdant Length: ~3,000 words; one-shot Rating: PG Genre: AU, gen, angst Pairing: Implications of Taguchi/Kamenashi Summary: Part One of: Road Not Taken AU. Taguchi says, “I promised you 200%, Kazuya.” Sometimes, decisions have long-standing repercussions. Warning: nothing, really. Notes: I should just create a default note. It'd go something like: "Trell is the best editor ever, this is for Rei, thanks to Rei for all her help." Unfortunately, this story requires a bit more notes, so there's a post-writing commentary (link at bottom), and this story is probably best read when you understand the basic premise: Taguchi is one of the frontman of KAT-TUN.
