MFA Show Reviewed

MFA Show

Show review from Eugene Weekly article:

Finally, to mention two other lovely works: Hoa-Lan Tran's Waking Life/Dreaming Life, a woodcut-acrylic-gold leaf-watercolor-chine collé thing of beauty, with long scrolls for each hour of the day set up in an open circle, colors shining for daytime hours and muted for the night. Images (a crown of thorns, a butterfly) float in various scrolls, but sharply defined squares near the top of each hanging connect every hour to the next. And Amelia Raley's charming Oh My! This Screen Reflects My Sky: Vintage Vivants in the Digital Age showcases her fascination with "time traveling" and adopting some of the past, a time she says runs from 1920 to 1948. The black and white photos of film stars, the carefully recreated piece of furniture and the velvet hearts lead to the world of elegance celebrated by, say, Cole Porter.

Thank you to everyone who participated! The museum is allowing us to take proper photos of the exhibit next week, but I wanted to post a photo from opening night so that you get a little taste.

This summer, I hope to revamp the website & catalogue the submissions. I want this to become an ongoing internet dialogue. I'm even working on getting a "Vintage Vivant" entry on Wikipedia.

So, thank you all again for your participation!

Assignment #2: Star Portrait

Submit a photo of yourself that mimics a photograph or artwork from 1920 - 1949. Include one portrait of yourself, and the original photo you've based your submission on. These will be digitally printed and hung in the MFA show, so please email a large file (I can rescale them for the website portion). Please email me if you have any technical questions!

final day to accept images: March 18th

I think March 18th is the last possible day that I can accept, after that I need to start doing final prints & layout.**

Everything is quickly moving in the direction of Memory of a Memory assignment and Mimic of a Photograph or Artwork assignment, if that helps your direction!

Thanks again to all who have contributed until now!

*** (I will continue to accept assignments indefinitely, but they probably won't be able to be included in the museum show).

Assignment #5 - Questionnaire Meme

Hello everyone!

Here are my answers to the Questionnaire Meme, including pictures!

BASICS:
First Name/Alias: julia marie gabrielle caron, garconniere
Location: Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
Age: 21
Years/decades you are most fond of: 1920s are by far my favourite, 50s, 60s
Years/decades you successfully recreate most often: 50s and 60s, I really pull off the 50s the best because of my figure and height. I can't find many earlier clothes that fit me since I'm so tall and big (5'11", 160 pounds) which has led me to explore drag (dressing in men's clothing) as an option. I have yet to find a nice men's suit, but I did own a pair of 40s tweed men's pants along with some other men's items. I am not slim-hipped, so pulling off 20s clothing is very difficult, even if I do manage to find it.

progress!

Hello, all!

I have been getting some GREAT submissions from you all. My committee review is on March 9th, where I will unveil the website & submissions & my projected plans for the Museum show that opens in May.

Do check out the website for all of the submissions:

Vintage Vivants

I want this to be an on-going project/forum for Vintage Vivants, but I will stress that time is of the essence with regards to the museum show, so I'd like to have the majority of submissions in by Mid-March.

As always, please email me or reply with any questions or comments!
