This 1,401-digit number is known as the first illegal prime.

When DVDs first launched in 1996, Hollywood was worried about piracy. So to protect against this, commercial DVDs came with an encryption system called CSS (Content Scramble System).

A licensed DVD player was given a secret cryptographic key called a player key. However, the encryption algorithm they used was extremely weak. For example, they used a 40-bit key size (this is like using a knotted rope to protect a bank vault), and there were issues with how the keys were distributed.

A 15-year old in Norway named Jon Johansen, better known as DVD Jon, is often credited as the one who broke the system. He wanted to watch the Matrix on his Linux computer. But Hollywood hadn't built a DVD player for Linux.

Jon and the other members of a group called the Masters of Reverse Engineering obtained a copy of a Windows DVD player called Jiang DVD and reverse-engineered it. They discovered a CSS player key inside the software. Because every legitimate DVD player needed such a key in order to play protected DVDs, extracting one gave them a foothold into the entire CSS system.

The group used this information to write a program called DeCSS, which could decrypt CSS-protected DVDs. It was released in 1999.

Hollywood's response was immediate. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) sued everyone over this. This included the original hackers, but also the websites that hosted the code.

In the court case Universal City Studios, Inc v. Corley, Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that DeCC was both expressive speech and functional code, and that the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions could constitutionally restrict its distribution.

This made computer scientists worried. What about the math behind computer programs?

In protest, the website Gallery of CSS Descramblers was created that showcased different versions of the code, such as in the original C, in pure lambda calculus, on a T-shirt, as a circuit implementation in Verilog, and even as a haiku.

However, the ultimate flex came from a mathematician known as Phil Carmody. He realized that any computer file is really just a giant binary number. So he took a gzip-compressed representation of the DeCSS source code, interpreted its bytes as an integer, and searched for a representation that was also prime.

And eventually, he found one.

The result was a 1,401-digit prime number whose hexadecimal representation can be interpreted as a gzip file containing DeCSS source code.

The mathematics itself doesn't know or care that the number represents a program. It's simply a prime. But under a different interpretation, those exact same bits are executable code capable of circumventing DVD encryption.

And this trapped the court in a paradox. Prime numbers are not inventions, so this raised an interesting question. Can the US government ban a prime number?

Eventually the legal controversy fizzled out, and the broader legal issues around circumvention information remained much more complicated.

So this number stands as a testament to a specific moment in history when the US government tried to ban a part of the number line.

God the 11 year old girls you put on this earth to climb trees and play with plastic animals are buying foundation at the drug store

for a second i thought you meant foundation like, a building foundation. not makeup

God the 11 year old girls you put on this earth are building something great and terrible on the edge of town

The best variety of cryptid sighting is very region-locked mythical creature that's never reported as a "cryptid" reported in a place it shouldn't be

"Y'all, I saw a green-skinned creature with a bowl of water in its head" Okay you saw a kappa, what was a kappa doing in Alabama

Every time I think about the entry level job paradox my head feels like it’s gonna explode.

Whenever I think about all the people that didn’t hire me to be a busser because I didn’t have any restaurant experience even though it’s the lowest ranking job in the restaurant I feel a dangerous urge to strangle a hiring manager.

Some internships ask for experience. Internships. You know. The places you’re supposed to get experience? Those things? I wanna eat a door.

Quite frankly I don’t know how anyone gets into any industry. Any of them. Office workers must just spawn like minecraft mobs or something.

comfort check

  • lounging in an ouch position?
  • haven't taken a deep breath lately?
  • hungry? thirsty?
  • need to use the toilet?
  • too much sensory input?

this is your reminder to get comfortable! go do what you need to do!

im incredibly conflicted by the phrase ‘the question is not who will let me but who will stop me’ because on one hand its so fucking raw and powerful but on the other hand it’s derived from ayn rand but on yet another hand the first and primary time ive ever seen it was on a picture of a lawnmower flying through the sky which is the perfect level of absurd and nonsensical that would piss ayn rand off

reblog to piss off ayn rands ghost

in regards to the USA hockey leagues policy update effectively barring all transgender athletes from playing hockey at any level I hope heated rivalry doubles the fuck down n every background hockey player in season two is trans. fuck the leagues queer ppl deserve to be in sports.

bringing this back around to include a petition for anyone willing to sign. this started off kinda light hearted but really this is so important. to clarify this is not an nhl policy. this is regarding any usa league down to the recreational ones played in shitty hometown rinks. this is a USA policy that would ban Trans players from leagues that are strictly for fun. don't let them get away with this bullshit. make your voice heard.
