[x] yourlibrarian: SPN 4.20 - Who are you?: "Out of My Mind" by sweetiejen. I liked how the vid opened with images of grief and obsessiveness. Sam being grabbed as he lays flowers at a grave, and then the rise of Dean's hand out of the grave at the very end. Sam seems to think he's going crazy, but maybe he's just being haunted. I really enjoyed how she paralleled all these activities the boys used to do together, but which Sam now does alone. Sam continues hunting, continues searching for Dean, questions his own sanity, but he goes on. Those moments at 2:57 when the song talks about Dean being a "ghost" in Sam, and it's questionable who Sam even is at that point, it's like his old self, too, is just a ghost in him now. I think these quick overlays speak so strongly about the following scenes with Ruby, and Sam gaining power. Dean's sacrifice-at-all-cost ethos has sunk into Sam, so that he's ready to go down the most appalling paths if it will get him his goal at the end.

Why this vid kicks ass: So here we have a lovely little Doctor Who/Torchwood crossover where Jack has to tell the Doctor that he's pregnant. And he's keeping his baby. So we have an extremely well-done crack!vid that comes from Jack's brief mention of 'never doing that again' in regards to being pregnant. Poor Jack. Here he is knocked up AND he's got to deal with the Doctor's disapproval. At least he has Ianto to comfort him.

[x] leuco crystal violet - because when I arrive, I bring the fire: In my absence, I leave you with a fanvid rec from one of my consistently favorite vidders, [info]mranderson71: Iron Man -- Let It Rock If I weren't in such a hurry to get out the door, I'd definitely say more, but the gist of it is... another fantastic edit, from a vidder I feel has a firm grasp of the style I love most; whip-crack editing, great sense of rhythm, rich and fun layering of imagery and movement, and unexpected insight into the meshing of lyrics and clips. I already gushed about this one in a comment at the post, but... damn, it felt good to watch another awesome Iron Man vid (the last time I did, I gushed about it in another rec post, heh; it was pretty early this year). I still love that movie so damn much. So, if you're at all interested, go check it out! Bask in the awesome! And be sure to let the vidder know if you enjoyed, because he's one of my favorites, dammit, and I'd love to see more from him.

[x] fiercynn: vid recs!: It’s Not Over Yet by charmax (Merlin): focuses on Morgana and her destiny, as well as the way that Nimueh is similar to her and could draw her in. Non Lievi Alchun by halcyon_shift (Merlin): short but sweet and somewhat chilling, focusing on the Gwen/Morgana relationship but also on Morgana’s place in Camelot and everything that her magic makes her fear. OMG! by obsessive24 (DW/TW): I love it for the way she uses the music and the voiceovers, and fits the characters into those roles. Sea Lion by halcyon_shift (SPN): the Winchesters are not only screwed up from the start, but they are also doomed. Focuses somewhat on Mary and the incentives that the men have for leading their lives, as well as the repercussions. Whatever It Takes by fan_eunice (Bend It Like Beckham): Jess and Jules! Soccer! Happy music! This vid makes me really happy. Femslashy to some extent. Rodeohead by absolutedestiny (Firefly): a look at the entire series, the characters and everything that makes Firefly itself.

[x] fiercynn: vid recs!: Windowsill, by sweetestdrain (SPN): mainly focusing on Sam and his sacrifices, with a lovely build-up and explosive, emotional ending. The Sharpest Lives, by giandujakiss (SPN): the boys have it hard. Which we know, but this vid shows it even better, and is somehow ridiculously addictive. Set The Fire To The Third Bar, by sol_se (TW): Torchwood is, underneath, a series of tragedies for their characters. I love the way this vid crescendos from the ordinary misery of (especially Ianto’s) everyday life to the dangerous crises they fall into. Deus Ibi Est, by charmax (SPN): a John Winchester vid – the music is perfect, and it completely illustrates his motivations, hopes, desperation, and the way everything comes together. 500 Miles, by suzvoy (Merlin): happy fun slash vid! But also a perfect way of showing how much Merlin and Arthur are willing to risk and sacrifice for each other. The Way We Get By, by charmax (SPN): brothers will be brothers. Perfectly structured and cut.

[x] fiercynn: vid recs!: Two Step, by Luminosity (SPN): sacrifice and danger, Dean and the way that he continues to face the idea of losing everyone he loves. Drop Dead Gorgeous, by astolat (SV): “I know my ex-boyfriend lies” Because really, Smallville is all about secrets and lies, and without them the characters might not have connected in the first place, but also can’t trust each other in any way. Empty Hearts, by sweetestdrain (Merlin): uses direct visual parallels to show the relationships between Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, and Morgana, their dynamic as a foursome, and the similar issues that they have – and does it perfectly. Falling For The First Time, by sisabet (SPN): fun slashy vid about the Sam/Dean relationship, but also an amazing way of showing everything that they go through. Papa Don’t Preach, by fan_eunice [and greensilver] (DW S3/TW S2): an awesome and hilarious vid, but also a brilliant constructed reality that is not only believable but incredibly clever.

[x] fiercynn: vid recs!: Bukowski, by astolat (House): The quick cuts to the music are absolutely brilliant, and the choice of clips showing House’s life and relationships work perfectly to the chorus, who would want to be such an asshole. Red, by obsessive24 (Merlin): the Arthurian legend is, after all, a tragedy, and the characters of Merlin are already headed down that path. An absolutely beautiful vid, from song choice to the contrasting and parallel clips and everything. Bricks, by Luminosity (SPN): Sam and Dean work and work and work and carry a burden, and in the end they still have to make sacrifices. perfectly sets the tone of the show throughout all the struggles they face. 10,000 Nights of Thunder, by mamoru22 (Merlin): probably still my favorite ... a shamelessly fun slash vid set to a pop song. pop is about making you feel good and not necessarily about deeper meaning (though not always, of course), but these pop things are the best at doing that.

[x] fiercynn: vid recs!: Still Alive, by counteragent (SPN, S3): another look at the treatment of women in SPN, mostly from Season 3, but also at the way that fandom and canon interact and our place in shaping the story. Secret Asian Man, by shati (Firefly): despite the fact that in the universe of Firefly, Chinese culture is supposed to be as significant and prominent as Western English-speaking culture, there are very few real Asians in the show and even fewer who are important characters. This vid contrasts the lack of well-rounded Asian characters with the appropriation of Asian language and culture for aesthetic purposes in the show. How Much Is That Geisha In The Window?, by lierdumoa (Firefly): similar theme and criticism to “Secret Asian Man”, but done very differently and equally well.

[x] Secret Fannish Identity - vid recs!: Unnatural Selection, by charmax (BSG/Sarah Conner Chronicles): robots are the next form of evolution. Creepy, brilliant look at the future of artificial intelligence. I Put You There, by laurashapiro and halcyon_shift : an interesting mix of original animation and live-action TV show footage, telling the story of fans and how they mold their characters’ lives. I Love You Fandom, by barkley: all original footage celebrating fandom as not only a space of creativity but of community. Critical vids: Handlebars, by flummery (DW S4): an absolutely brilliant look at the character of the Doctor, his perspective on his life, and the unthinkable measure of power that he has. Women’s Work, by Luminosity and sisabet (SPN S2): when you think women in SPN, really only a few of the significant recurring characters come to mind. But women are present throughout the show, usually as victims. This vid focuses on them and shows how we take violence against women for granted, as do the characters in SPN.

[x] fiercynn: vid recs!: Meta: Us, by lim: Regina Spektor’s song works perfectly, and it’s both artistically and thematically brilliant and beautiful. The Glass, by thingswithwings: takes the idea from Henry Jenkin’s article “Normal Female Interest in Men Bonking” where he describes to non-fans that “slash is what happens when you take away the glass” and uses it literally, contrasting images of characters separated by windows as well as their problems. One Night Fandoms: A Tribute to Yuletide, by eruthros and thingswithwings: exactly what it sounds like! A vid celebrating small and rare fandoms that are showcased during Yuletide, not only in fiction but in multimedia. I’m Your Man, by charmax: made for International Day of Femslash and celebrating relationships between women through film and television history. Climbing Up The Walls, by obsessive24 (SPN S3/Heroes/Firefly): a chilling look at sibling-incestuous relationships in the three sources – the way they compare, and the problems that all of them have.

[x] Working in the Dollhouse at Feminist SF - The Blog!: Dollhouse requires a lot of work to enjoy. So far, it hasn’t required more work than I’m willing to give it [...] Gianduja Kiss has created a fanvid for the show to the tune of “It Depends on What You Pay”. It was linked before, but I embedded it here too because it makes my point so well. The vid has a trigger-warning attached as the contrast of the Dolls’ assignments, mostly sexual, sometimes violent, with a cheery sounding song about rape is disturbing, to say the least. The vid is only triggering, however, if you get the horror of the show’s premise and work to make the connection between the words of the song and the scenes before you. And it is work. I’m saying this as a film scholar. The rape scenes on Dollhouse are rarely shot as rapes. The horror is intellectual, not yet on screen — at least not often. This isn’t about subtlety for me, it’s about a lackluster use of the medium. The shots are too glammy. The editing doesn’t make you question what’s going on.

It’s so spot on I can’t even describe. Go watch, if you’re inclined, but be aware that it could be triggery.

Battestar Inferno by crickets: this may be the best crack I've ever seen. Mr. Roboto by nicole_anell: Boomer freaking out to Styx. I Touch Myself by nicole_anell: THIS SHOULD NOT WORK! Except that Gaius Baltar obviously wrote this song, and well, it's THEM. Let's Go Crazy by laurashapiro and sdwolfpup: watched this one repeatedly because it is just that awesome. Gen through the S3 finale. Somebody Told Me by beccatoria: "All aboard the season four WHORE TRAIN!" Take Me Now by boom_queen: This vid made me believe in every one of these pairings into the more hilarious Romo/Lee, Anders/Duck and Doral/Doral. Could not stop laughing. Single Ladies by taragel: Hysterical use of WMM's stranger special effects. I Feel Lucky by taragel: Kara Thrace being awesome. It's the country and the matching lyrics that make me break out in giggles every time. God Is A DJ by dualbunny: Amazing editing.

[x] Smallville: The Future Doesn't Scare Me [Confessions of my Alter Ego]: This is a first for me. I've never seen anything like this before and I found it intriguing. I wonder if this is a new trend in vid making? I've seen fanfic pimping videos. The one that comes to mind is the vid about Omiai, a Smallville Clex fic by rose_emily; but this vid is fanfic in songvid format complete with dialogue/subtitles. Warning it's mpreg, so it's not for everyone. Title: The Future Doesn't Scare Me Vidder: ladydreamer or deliriumbubbles Pairing: Clex Summary: Lex is a profoundly lonely man. But in Clark's first year of college, he and Clark consummate their relationship, and one night with a broken condom leads to family strife. Clark and Lex refuse to let it tear them apart when they need each other the most.

[x] [some kind of title] - movie & vid rec: Revengers Tragedy: This movie has been sitting in my to-watch queue ever since I saw astolat & Thuvia Ptarth's vid on last year's VividCon DVDs. This version of Revengers Tragedy (IMDB) is the Thomas Middleton play updated to a modern, somewhat post-apocalyptic setting. Christopher Eccleston & Eddie Izzard have mad chemistry together! Wow. I want an entire movie just about their relationship, please. Forget about everything else going on. I could tell from the video that they would be slashy together, but it's even more interesting to see them in action. [x] hot off the meat truck! - vid rec: "It Depends On What You Pay": giandujakiss made a Dollhouse vid, It Depends On What You Pay (The Fantasticks), and it is seriously the most perfect, cutting, thesis-in-vid-form I've seen in a long while. Fucking perfect. And I say that as someone who likes the show. (If you love it and don't find it at all skeevy, this... will definitely harsh your squee. I basically agree with the people that find it terribly skeevy, and have my own issues with it, yet... can watch it without any nausea and am actively hooked and enjoying it. Very, very different strokes for different folks?) Anyway. Fucking amazing vid. Cuts to the core of the problematic stuff. And the editing and the song choice and the clip choice and the rhythm are so perfect and beautiful. ETA: May be triggery for some. Sorry for not mentioning that originally (when the vidder herself did).

[x] Vid Recs: aycheb, Nobody Loves You: A vid like poetry. Noir Ellison, black and white, crisp, puts the clues together like a dogshoe does. But the slinky femme fatale he finds (naked, sleek, Brancusi sculpture in motion) is not about sex. cherryice, Unsteady Ground; hollywoodgrrl, Life in a Glass House; heyiya, Exit Music for a Witch: A troika of Merlin re-envisionings focused on Morgana, especially on her psychic visions/dreams and her ambiguous canonical/extracanonical position both inside and outside the charmed circle of power and intimacy. obsessive24, Effigy (Merlin): I have such conflicted feelings about this! It does such violence to Gwen's character to fit her into the position of the mythic Guinevere. Because Sylar really wouldn't take it well that his old boyfriend has shacked up and is raising a kid with another guy, while he spent most of the hiatus with his insides hanging out. The song choice is perfectly creepily obsessive for Sylar. Clear and crisp it feels just like looking at canon at a slight angle. Particularly with some of the M3 clips there's a definite feeling of an outside looking in the POV. Through the song there's a switching between the Mohinder/Sylar relationship and the violence and into the violence in their relationship. The spinning and turning motion so follows to the loops in the music, and the cropping of clips and fades hold the focus of the vid on Mohinder, Sylar and the made-family -and brains- standing between them. [x] crack_van: FANVID: My Brown Eyed Boy by Vysila (PG-13): My Brown Eyed Boy by vysila. MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin. Now, I will say truthfully that I was always an Illya girl, no question. I suppose I am to a certain degree, but since rewatching all the episodes again for the first time in about 15 years (and with a little jostling from my flist LOL) I have come to new appreciation of the lovely Napoleon Solo. This is a Napoleon centric-fanvid, but implies slash with the also lovely Illya *g*. This video has some very fancy effects which I would have no idea how to do, but which vysila manages effortlessly. I love all her videos so far and I hope she makes more. The clips are perfectly edited and capture Napoleon's charming manner as well as his relationship with Illya as both partner and more :-) Exceptional timing, slashy shots and DVD quality video to boot. Anita is one of the longest standing Gibbs/Ducky fans and like several of them is multi-talented; she writes, she makes graphics and she is also a great songvidder - as this songvid shows. As always Anita matches the clips from the show with the lyrics to superb effect and shows us the relationship between Gibbs and Ducky as old friends and lovers. They say so much with a look, a touch, a tilt of the head. It's a fun video that is pretty much from Gibbs's POV about Ducky and it 'hints' at the whole 'Ducky is Illya (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) 'theory' that some NCIS fen like to talk about. I personally don't buy that and never have (in fact quite the opposite). Thus it's a good testament to Anita's ability that I enjoy this video so much as to recommend it. And even if you aren't a Gibbs/Ducky fan, this video can be enjoyed as a deep, close friendship video - because all it consists of is what we see on the screen week in week out.

[x] Wild nights are my glory. - Drive-by Fanvid Recs: Talk Show Host by hollywoodgrrl. This vid is based entirely on the first-season two-parter The Storm/The Eye. The editing is excellent, though it took me a second viewing to really appreciate the jump-cuts, and the story comes through extremely well on this one. Changes by chayiana. This is an immensely energetic fanvid that does a flyover of much of the series, and it really manages to show the transition in character/mood/theme that happens as the show progresses. This is a fantastic spotlight on Sheppard. The editing is flawless, full of new things to notice on each viewing. Really excellent; I'm always surprised when I come across a rec list that doesn't include this one. Stress by Clucking Belles. As the vidders' summary says: "Rodney McKay + Stress = OTP". (Do check out the multifandom "Us", by the way.) I picked this one out of the various and sundry SGA vids on display because it's the one that first jumped out at me, really. it's worth a shot, even if you have no interest whatsoever in SGA - the editing is just that good. It's darkfic in fanvid form - and hey, it's Johnny Cash. Go watch it. How to Save a Life by obfreak. I have a bit of a thing for TV doctors, and Carson Beckett's no exception. This may or may not have to do with that extended McCoy comparison in that season one episode, dangit. Having dipped my toe into this fandom, I'm a little disappointed at the lack of material for him, all things considered, so I was thrilled to come across this vid. The clip choices are what really set this one apart, though the editing is also excellent - it tells a lot of stories in a very short time, and tells them well.

[x] Sheena & Stina's Fan Video Of The Week - Twifans: This week's video: Edward Cullen: Disarm (The Killer In Me) by HBHO STINA SAYS: This is seriously my favorite Edward Cullen fan video I have ever seen! The editing is so original and lovely. And it makes connections between Edward and Bella that I hadn't really thought of before. I really liked the idea of showing a young/child Edward, breifly. The song also fits his character, as well as some aspects of Edward and Bella's relationship really well. Trust me, you have not seen anything like this, and you must watch it, because I doubt another vidder will come up with something so original and entertaining. It's hard to think of a genre dominated by a text the way LotR dominates fantasy. And it's hard to think of Bigger Movie than Jackson's LotR. And while JRRT's LotR supports many progressive readings (even at a stretch some anti-racist ones), it is also very racist. And Jackson's films are shockingly on board with that - they magnify and intensify the most egregiously racist things in the book, and add others, rather than trying to ameliorate the racism to reflect modified views on race and colonialism at the turn of the 21st century. But the very no-holds-barred relish with which Jackson throws all that anger and all those fantasies and projections and fears about race onto the screen makes them ripe for reappropriation in the digital format. It's so clean, so sharp, and so perfect - and laugh out loud funny, and fun.

And seeing what she sees translate into a vid, seeing her own vision sometimes involve or adapt through the creative process...well that was a real eye opener as far as my own vidding is concerned. I love this vid like it's my own, probably even more so because it's not mine and I have the creative process without the brain hurting. And I think - I know - that you will all love it to. It's silly and CUTE. solanyxe uses familiar Arthur/Merlin footage but tells a fresh story with it. Good editing and lyric-matching makes for a solid piece. In short: CUTE CUTE CUTE. Made me all squishy inside. Just Dance with the Memories by solanyxe. Arthur/Merlin, modern!AU. Merlin and Arthur are reborn. As they meet again, memories from their past lives emerge. Done to "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga. This is one clever vid! In her second entry on the list this week, solanyxe demonstrates her vidding prowess by using a GIANT library of footage sources to stitch together a wholly new story. While the narration isn't seamless, it's still largely successful for such a mammoth undertaking. Anyway, go watch it. It's a whole new Arthur/Merlin story full of fun clips from their non-Merlin appearances, and the sweet story remains intact.

[x] Fandom-whore extraordinaire - Merlin vid rec: 'Closing in' by kinseymill (AU, Arthur/Merlin) She took scenes from different movies/series that Bradley James has been in (plus some RL footage of the boys at a premiere I think), picked just the right scenes and blended them all together in such a clever way that she's telling a whole new story, of Arthur living now and remembering a time in an earlier life when he and Merlin were together. She uses the fact that Bradley has worked with several people from Merlin in earlier projects. I love the dreamlike quality of the vid and the music of Imogen Heap fits in beautifully.

In terms of narrative structure the vid had a certain Lovely Bones-ish feel (at least for me), which really hit the spot emotionally. Lost at Sea by halcyon_shift, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Jesse character. So I have no idea what's going on content-wise, which rather sucks because it looks deep and striking and interesting. From a pure, shallow, visual perspective, the editing is meticulous as usual from Lithy and there is such a fabulous sense of movement and momentum, and object symbolism always works a treat whether or not you know the context.

This vid definitely made me cry, but in a “wow, but these were amazing characters who had a an absolutely beautiful relationship, and I’ll never regret the journey” cathartic way. I’ve also revisited “Combat Baby” and “Someone to Trust” latteaddict’s “Local God.” it’s just so fun. About as lighthearted as a BSG vid can get, this was exactly the sort of vid (and song in general) to lighten my spirits. bop_radar’s South Side This vid is a bit dark (as any true study of these characters and their post-apocalyptic way of life has to be), but it’s also uplifting in that it highlights how incredibly awesome all of Galactica’s pilots were and how they were making the most of the lives they had at the time. Also, there’s a bias toward Apollo and Starbuck, Kara/Lee, so…yeah. “South Side” is brilliant, and I love love love it. taragel’s So What?, Keeps Getting Better, and I Feel Lucky vids. How can “Starbuck is awesome” vids not cheer you up? Seriously.

[x] The Wanderings and Ramblings - Meat + Procrastination = SPN Vid Recs (bhuz? Shhh, fuzzy logic): Somebody's Child by sabaceanbabe. The use of a secondary screen along the sidebar allows for multiple interpretations of the lyrics and lends to its alternating POV. Dividing attention between a large and a smaller screen has an interesting effect, and you'll probably have to watch this vid more than once just to see exactly what's going on. Also, because of the size of the small screen, to get the intended effect either download the vid and watch it in its original size or maximize it to full screen. The song catchy, achy, and fitting for a future look back on the "Winchester gospel" and the sequences during each play of chorus are beautifully chosen and will probably make you choke up. Kinetic by maichan808 is gorgeous. It seems to be more of study of camera movement and impressions than a narrative-based vid. I really like the severe desaturatization and blurriness. If you want to see some of the most striking pans and crane shots of the entire series take a look at this vid.

It feels very 'rounded' - as well you might expect of a vid with the title "Full Circle." Full Circle's simple but effective structure is shaped by thematic and visual mirroring and echoing. the beginning sequence with the walking, stopping and not stopping, looking and not looking, in Moya's hallways, announces the structural principle quite plainly. One thing that also deserves a mention when talking about Chasa is that she (mostly) handles special effects really well. There are actually a lot of effects in Full Circle, and all except - maybe - one (at 3:40), are unobtrusive and add to the vid instead of detracting (or distracting) from it. Lastly, I need to mention that, although the general 'pace' of the song and the vid is fairly calm, there is some nice rhythmic variation in the editing.

[x] cinema. sex. politics... vidding. - The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated: buffyann's La marée haute (Lost) - Perfect emotional song choice and clip choice. Desmond is a character that feels and projects emotions, which are captured very well. I always felt like Desmond was 5 minutes from breaking down completely in so many of his scenes. He grabs so desperately to things, while his storyline is so fractured. The vid does a stellar job of pulling him together enough to hold the viewer while he falls apart and tries to make the pieces fit. The barely contained energy is measured out with the cuts and clip choices. talitha78's "White" & Nerdy (Psych) - I'm continually in awe of the quirky motion and movement, as well as the lyric interpretations. I love how witty the concept is and how there's different levels of interpretation. tearful_eye's Day Carry Night (Criminal Minds) - The disorientation is beautifully done with the editing to the piano notes and the additional movements like a carousel when you want to get off.

This is a fun, quirky video that goes way beyond the vidder's basic description of "Alex Drake has many (read: many) excuses to hit the bottle." I particularly admire the part where the vidder juxtaposes the scenes of Gene carrying Adult!Alex from the beginning of the season with Gene carrying Young!Alex from the end. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Disarm by xandra_ptv - "Disarm" is one of those fanvids I've wanted to rec since I created a Livejournal--except it's been down all that time. xandra_ptv has *finally* remastered and reposted it, and I'm *so* glad. It was always one of my favorites--not just of hers, but of Buffy vids, in general. It might be the best Giles-character vid and Willow-character vid I've seen, despite (or because of) being a parallel portrait. There's a comment describing it as "epic" and "intriguing," and both adjectives fit perfectly!

The show’s original storyline follows two heroic brothers as they rid the world of paranormal events. Week after week, a “chick of the week” is slain by the brothers or supernatural forces. Luminosity & Sisabet ingeniously remove the two main male characters and focus their storyline on these killed-off and often nameless female characters in an effort to show how women are violated and eroticized to further the plot, but are rarely part of it. That track fits so well that it could have been *writteno for season four. when it got to the line an abominable colony of cyborgs I blinked at my computer screen in surprise, as if the images and the music had violated some sort of neutral zone in my mind simply by fitting so well. The line "Give me ethnicity or give me dreads" strikes me as a wonderfully succinct comment on one of the major flashpoints of cultural appropriation discussions. And this: "They'd be charging for compressed air / And marketing healthcare" It had me nodding right along until I realized with a shock that they do market healthcare, and isn't that the whole point? In the vid, obsessive24 offers a subversive alternate reading of BSG--one that doesn't involve Cylons!--viewing the politics of the Colonial Fleet from the point of view of Gaeta and Zarek and "the proles." Very thought-provoking. She explains it much better than I could, so go and read and watch.
