The western edge of the forest was already visible from where they were standing, but Legolas refused to go any further.

“Aragorn,” he breathed. Ever since the man had whispered his true name into Legolas’ ear last night, he repeated it over and over every chance he got, savouring the taste of it on his tongue. “Do you really need to leave?”

“I’m sorry, but I have tarried too long as it is. There are errands and friends waiting for me.”

With quick hands, Legolas plucked three strands of hair from his golden head to weave into a thin braid. “Hold out your hand,” he said and when Aragorn complied, he knotted the braid around the man’s wrist like a bracelet. “You promise to come back to me?”

Aragorn nodded. “I swear, I’ll come back to you.” He looked at the edge of the forest and then back at the elf. “You know – you were right.”

“How so?” Legolas inquired.

“When we first met, you said you had aimed for my heart. You were right, you did not miss. The arrow went deep and the wound aches. I fear it will never heal.” Aragorn put the hand with Legolas’ good-luck charm upon his heart. “It aches,” he repeated.

Legolas took Aragorn’s hand and kissed it reverently, lovingly. “I know. Come back to me as soon as you may and I will kiss it better. For an ache like that there is no other remedy.”

Aragorn nodded and smiled wistfully. “I have no choice then, I must come back.”

“You better. If you don’t, I’ll sharpen the tips of my arrows and I’ll come after you. If one arrow is not enough, I’m prepared to shoot as many as it takes.”

“Don’t worry, I’m already mortally wounded.”

They kissed, long and deep. And Legolas finally realised that the arrow that had been meant for Aragorn had not only pierced the man’s heart.

It had gone both ways.
