Vilas Travel Grants
The Graduate Student Collaborative (GSC) is pleased to announce the
2009-2010 Vilas Travel Grant Competition for UW-Madison Dissertators and
final-year Master of Fine Arts students. Five awards of $1,500 will be
granted for research travel outside the 48 United States; approximately
300 awards of $600 will also be granted for research or conference
travel. If you do not intended to apply for a Vilas Travel Grant this
year, we are also interested in recruiting dissertators to serve on the
peer review committee; see below for details.
The deadline for submission of the complete application packet is 4:30
p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2009. The awards will be announced by the
end of November. For more information, please visit

Travel award dates are partially retroactive. Travel may have begun on
or after September 1, 2009 and continue until August 31, 2010. For
conference travel, you must be presenting at the conference in which you
intend to use the grant. If you have not yet been accepted to present at
the conference, you should apply as if you have been accepted.
The GSC is hosting Vilas Travel Grant Workshops on Friday, October 9,
2009 from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. and Monday, October 12, 2009 from 5:30 -
6:30 p.m. Both workshops will cover the same material and will be held
in Bascom Hall, Room 260. These workshops will show you how to complete
successfully the Vilas Travel Grant application. Registration is
required: www.grad.wisc.edu/gsc/registration.
If you do not intend to apply for a Vilas Travel Grant this year, we

committee. Participating in the review process will not only provide a
valuable perspective but will also provide a unique opportunity for
professional development and valuable preparation for applying for other
