Holiday Celebrations

What kind of celebrations do you and yours have for the holiday season?

My family has two holiday celebrations, the solstice celebration and then the Christmas celebration. For the solstice we celebrate the rebirth of the Sun and the coming of new life. Then for Christmas we celebrate with my younger brother and his family.
Kids

Let's do it for the kids -- and all of us

Year after year I’ve felt frustrated about the bad air problems that we have here in the Salt Lake valley. This past winter was the hardest for me – it seemed like such a huge problem and I didn’t have a clue where to start to do something about it. I was excited to learn that a doctors group had organized on this issue, and even more excited when I learned that a mothers’ group was forming.

I attended the first meeting of Utah Moms for Clean Air tonight. I was heartened to see that about 60 people + children turned out at the Foothill library. There was a lot of information presented and a lot to take in, so I’ll probably parse out a “Did you know” post a day or something so as not to overload and overwhelm.

The group will be taking a 3 prong approach to eliminating much of our pollution: 1) government/regulatory/laws 2) corporate/industry and 3) personal responsibility/education.

UMFCA (?) has a web domain reserved (although the site is not yet up): utahmomsforcleanair.org

To get on the email list to find out about future meetings or online participation and what you can do to get involved, you can write to utahmomsforcleanair@gmail.com

Utah Moms (and Dads) for Clean Air

I don't know about y'all, but I've been pretty concerned about the health of the air in Salt Lake City at least since my early 20s. I remember waiting at a bus stop in the winter and noticing how brown the air was even two-blocks from my stop. I remember a taste on my mouth when I went outside -- it tasted like the photo developing chemicals that would somehow coat my tongue after a few hours in the dark room, which wasn't very well ventilated.

This past winter was one of the worst for me though. The air seemed filthier this winter than most. A friend's 5 year old had just died of cancer (probably no air related) which led me to do a little bit of reading on childhood cancers and realizing that about 80% of cancers are caused by "environmental factors" and that children are much more vulnerable than adults due to metabolism and other factors. As the parent of a 12 and 3 year old, I'm very concerned about what my kids are exposed to. Seeing my friend go through the cancer treatment and then death of her young child has convinced me that we need to do what ever we can to make sure that our kids grow up healthy and safe.

Working for clean air seems like a cause I'd like to get behind, but I wasn't sure how to go about it. There is now a group forming to address this situation, though -- Utah Moms for Clean Air. The first meeting will be held this Wednesday:

"Our first meeting is May 2nd, 6:30 to 8pm at the Anderson Foothill Library in Salt Lake City (1135 South 2100 East). We will listen to some experts, establish a draft mission statement, and brainstorm on how, by leveraging our moral standing as mothers, we can effect change to ensure our children have a healthy environment in which to grow and flourish.

One or more representatives from the Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment group will give an introductory presentation on the subject of the health consequences of Utah 's chronic air pollution. Dads and children are, of course, welcome too! (A play area will be set-up for quiet kid play)."

Summer Activities Fair

There will be a summer activities fair this Saturday at Highland High School (1700 E. 2166 S.) from 11 am to 3 pm. This is a good opportunity to see what types of camps, classes, workshops and other activities that will be availble to keep your kids happy and busy this summer.

Explaining death

How do you explain death to a toddler? How do you explain suicide? How do you explain that someone they know is never coming back? How do you help them cope, when you yourself are having a hard time handling it? How do you cope when someone you care for kills themselves?

New High School Community

Ever since LiveJournal started its schools feature I was wondering how people from the same schools could interact other than reading each others' LiveJournals. I decided to take some initiative and start a community for my alma mater, Highland High School, for any graduates or faculty that want a place to connect. Please feel free to spread the word to any LiveJournal Highland alumni that you may know.

Open Classroom Giant Rummage Sale

Salt Lake City's Open Classroom, an optional (and free program) in the Salt Lake City school district, will be having it's 6th annual rummage sale tomorrow (Saturday, October 15) from 8 am to 5 pm at Lowell Elementary School, which is located in the Avenues between D and E Streets,  and 2nd and 3rd Avenue (approx. 400 E. and 100 N. in Salt Lake City).

This is a huge sale of items donated from families in the OC, so there's lots of stuff for families and kids. In the past there's been lots of clothes, books, toys, electronic items, furniture for sale at bargain prices. This year will feature a bake sale and a "kiddie corral" for parents that would like to shop with out the kiddies.

All the proceeds benefit the Open Classroom.

HELP

Last night my sister-in-law, the one who had a hysterectomy a little over a month ago because of uterine cancer, who hasn't been able to go to work and is married to my little brother, who is in the Army and is going to Iraq in October, who had to have surgery on Thursday due to an abdominal abcess, well if all that wasn't shitty enough her apartment burned down last night.
She hasn't returned to work because of her surgery, so she had no savings. She had no renters insurance, etc. She and her 6 year old son made it out fine and they are well, other than being extremely traumatized. She has no clothing, no money, she is currently staying with her mother.
If you would like to help in any way you can make a paypal donation using my email address parkerc63 @msn.com or if you would like to )onate clothes, blankets, etc you can email me or call me (801) 274-1278.

Thanks,
Mary Callahan
